John McCain Attacks Rand Paul's 'Isolationism' In Willingness To Cut Defense Spending

John Mccain Rand Paul Defense Spending

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, expressed concern Monday that some new Republican legislators would be defined by their "protectionism and isolationism," two views that the Vietnam War veteran feared would result in a butting of heads within the party on Afghanistan and defense spending.

"I think there are going to be some tensions within our party," McCain said during a conference put on by Foreign Policy Initiative, a DC-based think tank. "I worry a lot about the rise of protectionism and isolationism in the Republican Party."

A prime example, McCain continued, was Rand Paul, Kentucky's next U.S. Senator.

"I admire his victory, but ... already he has talked about withdrawals [and] cuts in defense," McCain said.

Indeed, Paul appears to have taken after the more libertarian side of foreign policy issues, much like his father, Texas Rep. Ron Paul (R).

During an interview over the summer, Paul admitted that he was "not thinking about Afghanistan" and that "foreign policy is really a complete non-issue." He then went on to describe outright skepticism about the potential for the war in Afghanistan to produce successful results.

In 2008, Paul spoke even more resolutely, saying that Republicans would have to "look at military spending as well [as domestic]" in order to fulfill their promises to balance budgets.

But, Paul isn't alone in his inclination to address defense spending in the context of his fiscal concern. As ThinkProgress documents, there are at least five other GOP Senators who have announced plans to examine these types of spending cuts. Potential 2012 Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee also added his name Monday to a growing list of Republicans who say that that defense spending should be on the table.

According to McCain, Republicans who have hinted that they would be willing to prove their commitment to fiscal conservatism by considering blanket cuts, including in defense spending, are wrong primarily because the budget shortfalls could be mitigated simply by cutting earmarks and reducing Pentagon waste.

"People say this is only 2 to 3 percent of the budget," so it should not be touched, McCain said of the ongoing debate over banning earmarks. "Leave it alone? Give me a break!"

well, it's clear that mccain never read the books ron paul suggested he read during the '08 republican primaries, because he STILL can't seem to grasp the difference difference between an isolationist and a non-interventionist.

Right!?

McCain (or daugher - I know you creep around here) - Go buy your daddy some books for Christmas. 'Dying to Win: The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism' by Robert Pape, 'Blowback' by Chalmers Johnson (RIP!), 'The Sorrows of Empire' by Chalmers Johnson, and 'Nemesis' by Chalmers Johnson.

Then, help educate your father, the war mongering neocon, about Bin Laden - the man the Justice Dept has YET to charge with any crime relating to 9/11 because the FBI 'does not have enough evidence to do so!' He can start with Michael Scheuer's book called 'Imperial Hubris: Why the West is Losing the War on Terrorism.' Scheuer was head of the CIA's Bin Laden Unit before, during, and shortly after 9/11. He knows more about the man and how he operates than you ever will.

Go read fool, then go back to the Senate floor and have the balls to even consider provoking a war with North Korea OR Iran... or any other country for that matter. The deaths of our soldiers are on YOUR hands as well as your co-senators. END THESE ILLEGAL WARS!

Huh? How would one of the "Keating Five" from the BIGGEST scandal of the 80's ever criticize someone else?? No one remembers McCain from the saving & loan scandals?

How about something more recent, like when McCain & 29 more Senators (all Republicans) sided with corporations against gang rape victims, like Jamie Leigh Jones.

Paul won't stick to this track for long.  The lobbyists on the Hill will see to that.

So? Something wrong with "Isolationism"? Do you mean by that having Uncle Sam come home to take care of his own people, to do something with his billions besides giving it away to Mideast thugs to protect Israel? To protect Japan and China and Russia from North Korea? To have hundreds of military bases sprinkled all over the world? To be in three wars at the same time? Hey, perhaps we need a dose of Isolationism.

If the United States Congress is serious about reducing the DEBT, it will require a "combination" of measures, including all options on the TABLE. If McCain thinks the DEBT can be reduced by simply cutting "earmarks" & "waste reduction" has a SIMPLE brain.

It's going to take looking at: Defense, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security & Discretionary Spending, as well as, YES: Raising Taxes once the Economy rebounds.

LONG TERM DEBT is the problem and the accumulating INTEREST on that LONG TERM DEBT.

It isn't good enough to simply reduce the DEFICIT.

Rand will change his mind once all of those military contractor contributions start to roll in.

He uses those "big words" because they impress the followers who haven't the first clue as to their meaning. Me thinks maybe J Mc doesn't know either.
And why have such an outlandish defense budget when they're only fighting cave dwellers who seem to be doing pretty good on no budget ?

Those 'cave dwellers' defeated a formidible British army, brought down the Russian Empire, and in general beat the best military in the world. Our generlas should be studing with them, not fighting.

mccain doesn't know the difference between an isolationist and a non-interventionist.

..but then I don't know any politicians that I agree with 100%.
03:07 PM on 11/17/2010
Wow, a couple of months ago I was villified here on huffpo, trying to explain what Rand Paul stands for and how he (and of course his dad) is not a neocon. (TRUE teabaggers are antiwar and anti federal reserve). Now we know.

I don't agree with Rand on everything, but then I don't know any .

These politicians were voted in office but they doesn't know how to govern!all talks and attacks against the POTUS!!but no substance, just big babbling garbage!with no solutions at all.Obama will wipe them all out through a civilize debate!with no smears writing or forwarded topics!!All empty headed extremist fools! We'll see how the republicans will work, they are on probation!

Obama's gonna have a hard time telling bold-faced lies that have resulted in some of the deadliest months in the middle eastern wars AGAIN to an overwhelming anti-war public. Obama lied, kids died.

He may have easily been able to wipe out the neocons, but he will never even come close to 'wiping out' a Paul, specifically Dr Ron, in any debate. Dr Paul debates philosophical viewpoints. Obama debates politics.

Protect our economy? Yeah. Bring our children home from never ending wars? Yeah. Hey, I like what I hear. What is McCain still doing in office?

Is this one of those "the enemy of my enemy" circumstances? I still hate them both, but now I have to figure out who I hate less?

Yep... Well Libertarians and Liberals have always agreed on few things.. Those being Anti-War and Anti-privacy intrusion.
02:07 PM on 11/17/2010
Of course now a days, you must be a hard core progressive like Dennis Kucinich or Russ Fiengold to be truly pro privacy/civil liberties and Anti-War.

True, being trying to defend this position for awhile here. Faved.
