Rachel Maddow took the Washington media to task for continuing to lavish attention on John McCain, who she said has changed his positions on major issues so many times that he is not worth paying attention to.

The reason for Maddow's focus on McCain was the Republican Senator's key role in blocking a repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ban, and his appearances on talk shows to discuss that and other issues. On her Monday show, Maddow played clip after clip of McCain contradicting himself on many different policy questions over the years, and then expressed puzzlement as to why he continued to be taken seriously in light of these dramatic shifts:

"John McCain's positions on every major policy issue that he has faced in the Senate are now utterly incoherent...and that makes it all the more remarkable that John McCain is such a perceived font of wisdom for the punditocracy in Washington. What John McCain says he thinks about something at any one moment carries this great weight in the Beltway and gets written up and pontificating over, despite the fact that if you wait five minutes, John McCain is likely to have a totally different stance on the same issue."

Maddow then noted, with some disbelief, that McCain had recently made his 59th appearance on "Meet the Press."
