Web Designers Vs. Web Developers (INFOGRAPHIC)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 11/16/10 10:46 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:10 PM ET

Web designers and developers occupy vastly different roles in the tech community, but they have one thing in common. According to this (tongue in cheek) infographic from Shane Snow, a HuffPostTech blogger, it's that they're scared of women.

"Yes, we know some designers and programmers are female. But the statement still stands!" writes Snow, the artist behind the humorous infographic called "Web Designers Vs. Web Developers," first posted on Six Revisions.

Snow's illustration visualizes the difference between developers and designers by comparing their hygiene, fashion sense, gadget accessories, median salaries, fears and more. According to the infographic, the two groups may look alike to the untrained observer, but they differ in every way--except for their shared fear of women.

Take a look at the infographic (below), then visit ShaneSnow.com for more work by the self-described "Web geek and writer."

As a GIMP user - I'm the non-traditional web designer since most of them use photoshop. GIMP users are typically not afraid of women.

Yea, I can agree with this infographic, but I must say, most of the programmers I know aren't afraid of women, they just never meet any due to job/major related isolation.

Real democracy = living wages.
04:56 PM on 11/16/2010
200870 and 1336300 -- available jobs?  Yet with so many programmers and designers out of work, methinks something is being inflated... or people being disqualified.  (probably due to ageism or the fact that the workers might want a living wage so they can pay back college costs where they learned all this stuff to begin with, since employers demand pricey degrees to get beyond HR's front desk...)

Nice to see the $85k pay for programmers -- in which part of the US?  Where the cost of living is the highest, no doubt...

These are median averages and frankly as someone who is a hiring manager for technology staff (I employ many ASP.NET developers) the average is right on the money.

Pretty sexist bu@#$%. Should have been noted that his applis to MALE designers and developers. None of the female designers/developers I know are afraid of women.

Quick! This is time for panic. We must form a search party. We must find your sense of humor before it is too late!

We have just a few hours to find it until the trail goes cold.

I have my headlamp, gloves, and two strips of peppered jerky at the ready.

Me too so where do we stand on the food chain?  I'm working and am quite busy and have had an outstanding career with continuous open doors.  It is a good field.

You can't open a relevant business without first seeing a professional graphic designer right?  Sure you can do it yourself if that is what you want your company image to look like right?  lol
02:22 PM on 11/16/2010
Yes, as you've noted in the manner indicative of your type, you're clearly a good old fashioned graphic designer.

As a woman who works in IT (including doing web design), I'm constantly battling sexist stereotypes and dealing with men who resist female intrusion in what they consider their domain (pardon the pun). I don't think humor is a justifiable excuse to continue to encourage these stereotypes. Not funny.

Brought to you by a web designer who's sitting around waiting for the programmer to finish coding. Cute. Way too cute for the programmer.

Probably not, remember the programmer has to get the bugs out.  So the GUI could very well be finished.  lol

Really? Did you really say noobs?

My guess is you're a Dev.
11:33 PM on 11/16/2010
I guess so. I also do 3D animation, motion graphics, and audio engineering.

Yes the people this diagram refers to are "noobs", "green horns", "beginners" - 20 something's that are still more worried about the t-shirt on their back than the design in their projects or the architecture of their code.

Hilarious, and as a web designer it is spot on. However, I am married to a hottie so the women part was funny, skinny jeans would be laughable on me, not perfectly true in all cases and all funny.
