Creative Minds 2011: Watch Our Interview With Leilani Münter (VIDEO)

As we we reach the end of the year, you'll no doubt be inundated with "best of 2010" lists on every topic imaginable. But we also want to look ahead to 2011--to the creative minds we're expecting great things from. These people have wowed us in many ways, but are nowhere near done.

"Life is short. Race hard. Live Green." That's Leilani Münter's motto. Münter (aka "Carbon Free Girl") is a professional race car driver and environmental activist. Those two descriptions may sound incongruous, but Leilani (one of the world's top female racers) has taken her passion for both and become a NASCAR ambassador for green living.

"One in every three people in America is a race fan -- that's about 100 million," she said in an interview with the Green Bay Press Gazette. "So if I even get 10 percent of them to not use plastic at the grocery store, that's better. They can do something easy, not hard, and that'll help. I can show them composting is cool, recycling is cool, and I hope that some of them will join me."

Münter has been a huge proponent of alternative energy and has raced hydrogen power and electric cars. She also called on NASCAR to look into greener fuels. Leilani has adopted an acre of rainforest for each race she's run since 2007 in order to offset her carbon footprint. She is the first Ambassador of the National Wildlife Federation and has made several visits to Capitol Hill to speak on behalf of climate change legislation.

Recently, Münter has made trips to Taiji, Japan, the site of the annual dolphin slaughter depicted in "The Cove." She has brought awareness and gathered shocking footage.

Watch our exclusive interview with Münter, below.

Dear Leilani, if a tree falls in the forest and there's no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Hi Leilani! How does veganism play a part in your health as a driver and your social conscience as an environmental activist?

Doesn't contributing to the pollution at the races kind of defeat the purpose of going green?

NO! We can sell her carbon emissions to third world countries. Follow me? I can't follow me either.

Ok, let me chime in. Nascar spills fuel on stops like a drunk slipping at the bar, has no focus on fuel efficiency, uses carburetors in efficient design. Fail. F1 uses tech and will again use KERS as well as some brands like Porsche that are trying to use Hybrid racers in sport car events. No offense, however Nascar is like the stone age of motorsports. IndyCar is getting it right with efficient designs, ethanol, and hopefully fuel saving strategies. So now my question, would you please race a Hybrid 911GTRS?

I just read that NASCAR has "become an official partner" with American Ethanol.

Seems illogical to use a major food crop like corn to make fuel
when it can be produced using plants that require less fertilizers and pesticides.

One of the best plants for this is, apparently, Cannabis Hemp;
and it can grow in marginal soils, preserving the best farmland for foodcrops.

NASCAR made their inbred er,
ingrained religo-fascistic politics quite clear earlier this year
when they refused to allow sponsorship of a car by CannabisTV in California;
a state where even Medical Cannabis is legal--
what's NASCAR's position on ethanol from Cannabis Hemp instead of Food Crops???...

Do apple seeds contain arsenic??

I take organic Arsenic daily.
I drink mineral water containing arsenic daily.
I eat apple seeds with arsenic daily.
Arsenic is one of the best known minerals for preventing CANCER.

I am 69 and will live to age 130,
because I am a doctor who studies minerals
& uses them to prevent cancer.

I see you love to travel, and so do I. Do you see anyway that the airline industry could realistically reduce the carbon footprint that air travel entails, or will we all need to be more content with driving to local vacations?
01:18 PM on 12/13/2010
sure, they could strap planes to the top of train cars, still go 300 mph, and save tons of energy.
