Mike Williams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Rookie, Arrested For DUI: Report

Mike Williams Dui

FRED GOODALL   11/19/10 04:16 PM ET   AP

TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa Bay's Mike Williams did not practice after his arrest on a DUI charge early Friday, however coach Raheem Morris said the rookie who leads the Buccaneers in receiving will travel to San Francisco and play Sunday against the 49ers.

The fourth-round draft pick out of Syracuse was arrested after Florida authorities spotted his black Escalade speeding and weaving in and out of traffic around 2:30 a.m.

Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said the 23-year-old's eyes were glassy and he smelled like alcohol when they pulled him over.

According to a breathalyzer test, Williams had a .065 blood-alcohol level, which is below Florida's 0.08 percent legal limit. The receiver was released on $500 bond.

Authorities can conduct a DUI investigation if they see signs of impairment and make an arrest regardless of blood-alcohol or urine tests, sheriff's spokesman Larry McKinnon said.

Williams, who has started every game this season, also submitted to a urine test, but McKinnon said the toxicology results could take 4-6 weeks.

"I'm very disappointed about the decision he made to be out late, and the worse decision he made to have a drink and drive," Morris said. He add that that after "gathering all the facts" he made the decision to allow Williams to travel with the team late Friday.

"He will be disciplined. But it won't have to do with playing time," Morris added. "We'll deal with it internally, like we always do."

"I'm very pleased with his ability to be cooperative and not be disrespectful and make this thing even worse than it could be," Morris said.

Williams, whose stock in the draft plummeted because of questions about his character in college, leads the Bucs with 40 receptions for 627 yards and five touchdowns. He's first among NFL rookies in receiving yards, second in receptions and tied for first in receiving TDs.

Williams was the 101st player selected the draft. He may well have been picked earlier if not for an academic suspension in 2008 and another off-field situation that led to him leaving Syracuse with three games remaining in the 2009 season.

The 6-foot-2, 212-pound receiver has quickly established himself as a go-to target for second-year quarterback Josh Freeman.

Morris said Williams had been making progress toward leaving questions about his character behind, adding that he hopes the young player learns from his arrest.

"It's disappointing because it was old news, and now you rehash and you've got to talk about it again," Morris said.

btw the team gave him a full spectrum urine test the next morning and already received clean results...so basically all you dime store judges are ready to throw this kid away are doing it because he went 12 miles over the speed limit...wow, this is where we are at now?

And that's relevant how? You don't have to be over .08 to be impaired, you just have to show that being under the influence effected your driving and caused the driver to drive in a dangerous manner.

oh well that's the LAW...deal. I challenge anybody sober to pass a field sobriety test. A yogi would struggle. Cops know it, the courts know it...just another "gottcha" for the new tax man...

dumb a$% in college = dumb a$% in NFL, wasted 4th round pick, not as bad as Denver's pick of Clarett, but not far off either, and I smell jail time for this young man in the near future, (possibly this upcoming weekend.)

That 'wasted' pick put up some nice plays including a score yesterday.

Cong, That is great, but Chris Henry also put up good numbers, and look how that ended up. As the saying goes,

Money doesn't build character, it magnifies it.

I hope I am wrong, I would love to see guys come into the pro game and maximize the talents they have, and not let personalities destroy a promising career. BTW, if you are a Tampa fan, what do you think of Cody Grimm? I have been keeping an eye on him, I am a Hokie, and it is good to see him doing well for his rookie season. I just wish my team would have drafted him, we need safety help.

Tampa Bay is a team full of juvenile delinquents,
I'm not even kidding,
they trashed a charter flight with a water fight.

yeah you're right, they're the youngest team in the league...so look out. They will mature with a swagger they all you wish you had on your team...

Maybe one day they'll grow up, but not this season

What I can't figure out is why the posts here are far more intelligent than the ones I read locally. Maybe it's because I live in Indiana. What's that song? "I gotta get out of this place..."

"Driving while black" is probably the issue here. Nice car, young black man, driving a little fast...probably playing his music loud. No doubt his expensive lawyer will get him out of this, as he should. Too bad it has to be news at all. Now go out and catch 12 for 150 and 2 TDs, young man.
05:49 PM on 11/22/2010
He didn't have those numbers but still had a solid day making two very nice plays. Receiving: M. Williams (TB) - 3 REC, 54 YDS, 1 TD.

Take it easy folks, after all he is in the NFL now.

He's just trying to fit in.
06:12 PM on 11/19/2010
He should be able to beat this in court down to a lesser charge seeing as he was under the legal limit. He is a young guy and this is his first mistake, we all make them.

Now this part is ridiculous....
"Authorities can conduct a DUI investigation if they see signs of impairment and make an arrest regardless of blood-alcohol or urine tests, sheriff's spokesman Larry McKinnon said."
Why bother setting a limit?

Question for you... in 2008, about 11,800 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes. That same year, another 11,600 were killed in speeding-related crashes.

Given that both DUI and speeding can be deadly, shouldn't offenders be treated the same?

Alcohol is the least of our worries...America is so pilled up. I bet every 3 people are either on a psychotropic or pain killer to get them through their insecure miserable lives these days...

Great career move, chump ... OTOH, it did get him in the national press. And that is what matters...
03:11 PM on 11/19/2010
He is making a lot of money to do a job and is not being responsible. Most of us are not out on a week night at 2:30 in the morning. He has responsibility to his team mates.
03:15 PM on 11/19/2010
Most of us don't work on sundays, either. What does a week night have to do with anything? I agree he may have been irresponsible, but he was under the limit.

To anyone that follows Syracuse University football, this should not come as a surprise.

hire a limo after 4 beers? He blew a .06! Most states the limit is .08. I dont see a court of law convicting him for such a low limit. There are millions of Americans that can afford a taxi after consuming 4 beers in a bar that dont call a taxi. Its not that cut and dry.

the urine test might tell a different, more accurate story.

Sooner or later, the body will rebel against staying out drinking until 2:30 in the morning, then getting up to go to practice.

How do you know he wasnt there for the last hour? He is 23 years old. I dont know too many folks whose body rebels against them from drinking 4 beers at 23!

Right, he went to the bar at 1:30.
And I said "sooner or later", not at 23.

Here's the deal(this is local)...the illegal rate in Florida is .08...he blew a .062 and a .061...EVERYBODY fails the "field sobriety test"...that's a given. So what is a cop supposed to do put you back in your car after all that. It's automatic that they arrest you. He even agreed to a urine test which he didn't have to...
Everybody's a55 is covered on this and the kid did NOTHING wrong other than go 57 in a 45 with alcohol on his breath....this case is a slam dunk for his lawyer and he hopefully has learned his lesson on not giving them the opportunity to put you away.

Looking forward to all the snarky retractions when he easily gets out of this....

Agreed. In live in Nashville. The city is very tight on DUI. I can easily say I know dozens of people who have had DUIs in the past ten years. Metro cops love to set up check-points (esp after Titan football games) and nab people. My point: reporting a DUI is lame. My other point: Take a damn cab, if you have more than two drinks, or stay home and party up.
