I have a great Martha Stewart recipe for sweet potato pie. It wouldn't be the holidays without it.

Years ago, when MS was just a blip on the style scene, I followed all she did and all her recipes, all her decorating ideas. But the recipes all tanked for me. I'm a decent cook, but I swear she always left out something to ruin it for we foodie peons. My dad used to call me to let me know, "that woman you love to hate is on the Today Show..." Years later, as I was waiting for a plumber at a place we rented (where our tenant, aka Martha Jr lived) and noticed MSL magazines all in order on a bookshelf. I tried as long as I could to resist, but finally did break down. It was wonderful...

Little known fact: Martha Stewart has only eaten McRib Sandwiches since they were reintroduced.

I feel like Thanksgiving (and Christmas, and New Years for my family) is about tradition. Why would you make new, different things every year? That would be just like any other day when you want to make something new. Thanksgiving food is food that you look forward to all year round, and that you know and expect.

My tradition seems to be that I get roped into working.

When I got married I asked my husband and his brother what was the one remembered food that couldn't be left out at their house when they were growing up. That's how waldorf astoria salad got added to our t-day tradition. Our table is full of can't-leave-out recipes for me, my Dad, my husband, and other guests who make their way to my table.

Once friends who grew up in a spicy food culture (without an American t-day) joined us. They were surprised that I, of all people, would serve such plain food. Well, I explained - part of the American tradition is what I call "pilgrim food" --turkey is not very exciting. So I always add a little something surprising and new in a side dish every year: It's as much for me as for anyone else.

I like to think that best loved things might return as someone else's "tradition" as a tip of the hat to my table years from now.

I could eat mashed potato sandwiches.

But if you really want to make them right, don't forget to add the mozzerella and parmaesan cheese along with a stick of butter.

Mashed potato sandwich with gravy??

That's...an awful lot of desserts.  Martha isn't balancing the meal very well.

Last year at my sister's house, my Republican brother-in-law needled me all day with his snide, snickering, preposterous teabaggerisms, but I never took the bait. (In his house, for some odd reason, Al Gore is the most despicable human being on planet earth. It's weirder than oysters in the stuffing.) We're having Thanksgiving dinner elsewhere this year. And next year, and the year after that.

They have some nice duct tape in holiday colors. Perhaps? I have this techinque to make it stick for at least two hours. (grin)

I had a relative talk incessively about O'Reilly last year (like he was God). Everyone caught on to my lead on convert redirect conversation. The weather, the pie, pets, and even the best underwear for cold weather. It was almost a comedy in itself.

Don't be a hater. Desserts are good. Deserts tend to be dry.

If you want a fantastic Thanksgiving dessert, look up the recipe for Martha Stewart's pumpkin flan. To die for! I made it for an early Thanksgiving dinner, and will be making it again on Thursday.

;-), I'll prepare these dishes as soon as I can solidify a peace accord in the Middle East.

(my brain spins when confronted with these mountains to climb).
