'DeepFreeze,' Photographer Robert McCabe's Book, Chronicles 1959 Antarctic Trip (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 11/21/10 10:58 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

Legendary photographer Robert McCabe got his first camera when he was 5-years old. He has traveled the world chronicling scenes from the Antarctic to Cuba during his long career.

In October, McCabe published "DeepFreeze! A Photographer's Antarctic Odyssey in the Year 1959," an account of photos he took as a 24-year old photographer on assignment for the New York Sunday Mirror Magazine. The photos are simply stunning, and a true feat in not just photojournalism but travel journalism.

Comments here generally think these are great pix. Who am I to disagree? Certainly the composition is excellent.... Allow me, however, to air a pet peeve: photographers as a species seem to just love black and white. Obviously color film was available in 1959. Personally I like B&W for things like The Outer Limits, but not for Antarctic photos. I would have enjoyed them much more in color.

My Dad took my sibs and me on a two-expedition to Antarctica in 2003. It was truly the trip of a lifetime. I never knew how blue the icebergs were. And we saw PINK icebergs. The guide told us it was due to algae inside of it. Took Zodiak boats out and saw lots of whales, etc. My Dad was 71 (passed away in 2005) and we even slept 'on the ice' one night. No tent, just a sleeping bag. Needless to say, we didn't really sleep much. :)

Great pics Mr McCabe. The only thing is why are you on the LA freeway in those pics with the road signs in the background? I'm only kidding about the LA freeway, but I ain't kidding when I say those are great pictures.
