The politics and turf war between traditional (also known as brick-and-mortar) and online schools have made it difficult to collect public, non-partisan data on virtual charter schools and online education in general.

If a 13 year old doesn't pay attention in a classroom with teachers and 20 students I can't imagine how being alone in his bedroom with a million distractions and no supervision will improve the situation.

I'd like to know where the accountability in it is. A girl down the street from us is enrolled in one of these. She spends all her time babysitting for the neighbor; basically, she's a 15 year old nanny. She dedicates maybe 2 hours a day to schoolwork.

It's a question of where the teacher is.  There is nothing magical about a single teacher in a room with 40 students.  To the contrary, the situation invites distractions and inefficiencies.  An electronic envrionment that covers the core values and leaves the clean up work for tutors is the best environment.
