Cookie Monster Auditions For 'Saturday Night Live' (VIDEO)

First Posted: 11/23/10 01:37 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

Yes, this is for real: Everyone's favorite cookie-devouring blue monster has kicked off a viral campaign to make him the next host of "Saturday Night Live," starting with this thoroughly convincing audition tape. Watch as Cookie Monster reenacts an entire episode of "SNL," including an opening monologue, a "MacGruber" sketch (aptly dubbed "Macarooner"), a "Weekend Update" segment and a musical appearance by "Monster Gaga."

Just so you know the campaign is legit, there's already a "Cookie Monster Should Host 'Saturday Night Live'" Facebook group rallying support online. Hey, it worked for Betty White!

Of course, if you go with Grover, you've got the Michael Steele sketch in your pocket, ready to go.

I was all on board, but, yes, I have to admit, Grover is the choice. SNL does enough waiter sketches to have Grover succeed.

I love you Cookie, but I think Grover would be better.

Not funny enough. Although most nights, SNL isn't funny enough, either, so maybe... But when Elmo made a guest appearance on Rove Live, is was funny enough.

Jim Henson did a lot of work on the earliest seasons Saturday Night Live,so if he gets on the whole thing comes full circle. =)

As much as I enjoy the Muppets, the audition tape is a lot like SNL for me -- too long.

Would rather see Grover on SNL. Everyone KNOWS he has more depth and breadth for such a show. Perhaps Cookie Monster could be the musical guest.

As someone who literally hasn't watched SNL in over ten years, I would absolutely watch it if Cookie Monster hosted.

Just as I cried when I learned "Fritz the Cat" was not for kids, I would be crying if I was told I couldn't watch Cookie Monster on Saturday Night Live.

I hope Cookie Monster gets to host SNL. Most of us grew up with the Muppets characters. Cookie Monster was always one of my favorite characters of the show. Speaking for myself, Cookie Monster hosting SNL would be like Sesame Street letting us parents who watch the show as kids, that they haven't forgotten us...
