New GOP Same As The Old GOP: Republicans Push Longtime Pet Issues

First Posted: 11/23/10 01:41 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- Republicans trumpeted their historic election gains as a sign that the American public is ready for change -- clearing the swamp and renewing the focus on job creation. But so far, it seems like the GOP is unable to resist first going after its longtime nemeses, whipping up the base with fears about groups like National Public Radio (NPR), Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

The first GOP-ordered House vote since the election came on Nov. 18: an attempt to take away all federal funding from NPR. While the procedural vote failed, it raised eyebrows due to the message it was sending about the party's priorities. Over the years, conservatives have repeatedly tried to yank funding for CPB, with Republicans most recently riled up over NPR's firing of analyst Juan Williams for comments he made about Muslims while on Fox News.

On Tuesday, GOP rising star Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) sent out an e-mail asking supporters to donate money to help him take down the pro-choice group Planned Parenthood:

House Republicans vowed to prevent abortion funding in our Pledge to America, and I'm ready to deliver that promise with legislation that will prevent abortion providers like Planned Parenthood from receiving a single dime from the federal government.

But your support is critical. With a new Republican majority, Planned Parenthood is running scared. The fear of losing their federal funding has led them to target me for my pro-life positions. They've even named me to their 2010 Election Hall of Shame for advocating a pro-life agenda on Capitol Hill! But I refuse to back down, so I need to know that you will stand strong with me for the sanctity of life.

Will you take a moment right now to follow this link to make an emergency contribution of $25, $50, $100, $250 or whatever you can spare to help me prevent Planned Parenthood and any other abortion provider from receiving our tax dollars?

"It is reprehensible that Rep. Mike Pence is raising money to advance his political career by playing politics with the health of millions of American women by calling for the full defunding of Planned Parenthood," responded Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood. "The simple fact is that millions of women across the United States rely on Planned Parenthood for their primary and preventive health care, including annual exams, lifesaving cancer screenings, contraception visits, and testing and treatments for sexually transmitted infections."

While many Republicans have advocated staying away from social issues in order to focus on jobs and the economy, Pence has argued that the two are inextricably linked.

"We must recognize that our present crisis is not merely economic and political, but moral," Pence stated in a September speech at the conservative Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C. "A political party that would govern this great nation must be able to handle more than one issue a time. We must focus on our fiscal crisis, and support our troops. We must work to create jobs, and protect human life and defend traditional marriage."

"Nothing in the Republican agenda is responsive to the jobs issue," said congressional scholar Thomas Mann of the Brookings Institution. "They are counting on the president being held accountable for sluggish growth and high unemployment over the next two years. History supports their view that they will benefit and Obama will suffer if the economy fails to pick up steam. In the meantime, they can energize their base. It's cynical given the pain and suffering in the country but it could work."

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), in line to become chairman of the powerful House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has also indicated that he will be going after Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Also on his target list: climate scientists and the much-maligned Environmental Protection Agency.

The new GOP is also the GOP of the Clinton years. They raise a din, it isn't about fairness. it is unqualified proliferated unfairness. Repubs use unfairness. They use the principle of unfairness as a political strategy. They don't concentrate on reasonable folks. They concentrate on..unreasonable folks. What fools the Republicans are, and how foolish are those who keep on voting for them. They are out dated obstructionists, and nothing else!

The GOP has long shown that they have no interest whatsoever in helping America.

The GOP wants to push their right-wing agenda and they will do ANYTHING to get it through.

How many times have we seen Republicans 100% proven wrong about an issue yet not one time can they admit to being wrong? Ever? It is embarrassing.

They would prefer American continue suffering as long as their agenda is in place so they can look "cool" to their political base

The Republicans do not want to ameliorate the jobs issue. While that would be good for working Americans, the Middle Class and the country as a whole, it would not be good for the Republicants quest to regain power. Everything they say and do is unAmerican. Platitudes and nonsense and people in this country buy it because it fits in a soundbite. Vote for me, I'll set you free. How's my flag lapel pin? It's straight ,right. Well there you go ...you know I'm fightin for you even though I definitely am not. I wish i could say it just borders on treason but sadly that is not the case. The uneducated electorate in this country keep voting them in.

Quite often we are quick to point fingers but we always fail to see the 3 pointing right back at us
this is a clear case of pot and kettle

Boehner and other pro-lifers are NOT pro life. They are PRE life. Boehner and other pro lifers will vote to balance the budget on the backs of women and children. Cut food stamps. Repeal our health care law. Defund the Department of Education. Once that baby is born, it's mother and itself are on their own. Boehner is PRE life, not pro life. There is no pro life, only PRE life.

"We must recognize that our present crisis is not merely economic and political, but moral," Pence stated.

Don't you just love when they pitch the morality card? There are so many morally bankrupt, "better than thou", so called Christians on the right, it is absolutely astounding they have the audacity to preach morality to others. They justify shuttering Planned Parenthood because one small portion of their existance is to offer abortion as an option for women. No merit is given for "their primary and preventive health care, including annual exams, lifesaving cancer screenings, contraception visits, and testing and treatments for sexually transmitted infections." Most of the time, contraception prevents pregnancy and subsequently prevents abortions.

These same morality supremists have no qualms about blasting another country's citizens to another century. Why does a fetus have so much more value than innocent little children and other human collateral damage?

I just don't understand the voters thinking at all. We are a divided nation and people. United is a joke, we are nation of have too much and those who have too little and greed has risen to the top as the holier than thou to be worshipped at the altarr on wall street. The government forgets that they are elected to serve the people and not themselves instead they line their pockets from corruption and power as they feed on their ego. WHAT IN THE WORLD HAS HAPPENED TO THIS COUNTRY? We can't even win wars anymore and we start them for the scare factor.

Ignorance Is Strength – Earmarks Are OK – Sometimes!

Herded by the Tea Party and John McCain, Senate Republicans announced a few days ago that they want to ban earmarks. Now the Senate Republicans’ #2 has fallen off the wagon and claimed a $200 million earmark for his state. [...]

Republican Tax cuts on the federal level = more money for mainly the wealthy. The problem with those cuts is it also means LESS money from the federal government returns to the States and local level which in turn forces those governments to RAISE taxes to keep the services the public demands.Anyone who takes a good look at just what happened during the past 10 years can see that for themselves, those Federal tax levels are at their lowest in decades but we ARE being overtaxed, the anger about that is badly misplaced by the majority of Americans. When the people most able to pay don't the people least able to pay have to.Yes there is an abundance of waste in Government, the right question to ask is, Are we better off? About 2% of Americans can say a resounding yes! the rest of us? not so much.

Why do republicans hate America so much that they are going to let the scary Arabs hurt us again? Republicans are protesting against the same airport scanners they used to support. I didn't think they could hate America more than they did already.

National security is no longer a higher priority than their interest in undermining Obama. So now they are allowing AQ to hurt this great and prosperous land. What about our churches and schools that are endangered by the republicans' selfish wishes?

Os.ama B.in La.den, the republicans no longer think, or care, that you are a threat.
