At a press conference on Tuesday, Acer unveiled two Android tablet devices. Both will go on sale in 2011, although neither have official names yet.

The larger tablet features a 10.1-inch multi-touch display and, according to Engadget, "a dual-core 1GHz processor, an HDMI output and a native 1280x800 (!) screen resolution." Consumers can also expect Flash support, front and rear-facing cameras (presumably for video calling) and a built-in Gyroscope for gaming.

The smaller, 7-inch device is built around a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm CPU, boasts a native resolution of 1280x800 pixels, and supports Adobe Flash 10.1. Boy Genius Report writes that the device will also feature dual cameras and HDMI-output. Like its larger counterpart, the 7-inch version will come equipped with Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity.

Acer representatives said the devices would be available in April 2011 but withheld specifics about operating systems and price tags. PCWorld suggests that Acer may be waiting for Google to release its Android 3.0 (aka Honeycomb) operating system.

IntoMobile reports that Acer also teased a "4.8-inch beast of a smartphone." Again, this device has no name, though IntoMobile was able to secure details about its "1024 x 480 resolution, 1GHz processor, 8MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing camera, HSPA+ 14.4 [capabilities]," plus a 21:9 aspect ratio. This handheld device is slotted for a 2011 release, too.

In addition, Acer shook things up with a unique device called the Iconia, a dual-screen laptop that operates on Windows 7, Engadget writes. Yahoo calls the twin 14.1-inch touch screens "dazzling."

According to WSJ.com, Acer is planning to open its own app store, which will carry software for the new devices.

Take a look at the slideshow (below) to see photographs of Acer's upcoming mobile collection.

You've got to admire the tech press, all tied up in knots like this is still 1995 and we're fighting the Mac vs. PC wars all over again -- all suffering with digital priapism in the hopes of seeing someone, anyone, please anyone do something to knock the dreaded iPad off!

Yawn. Wake me when something ships. Reviews I'm hearing from the field is that the Galaxy Tab is a horrid user experience, but hey, it runs that Superior Non-Sheep OS designed for all the Superior people who aren't iLemmings. Did I yawn yet? Never mind...

Tablets. App stores. What would this industry do without Apple?
01:21 PM on 11/29/2010
Implying Apple invented apps and tablets.
01:26 PM on 11/29/2010
No. Stating that Apple CREATED the current tablet market, and all others are playing catchup. Windows 7. Android, RIM..all of them. Just as they attempted to do with smartphones, just as they attempted to do with music players. Apple may not invent categories, but they sure successfully redefine them.

Yeah, cause in a way, they kinda did.

Tablet PCs.  Desktop computing.  What would this industry do without Microsoft?
04:40 PM on 11/30/2010
Yea Tablet PCs were such a huge success. Haha. Desktop computing? Do you mean DOS based computing or the Mac-ripped-off Windows. (And don't bother telling me about Xerox, I've heard it all before).

Yes, you're absolutely right. How could have I been so wrong. Apple stole from everybody else. You're the smartest, most tech-savvy person on this board...ev eryone else pales by comparison . Enjoy your life.

Acer has always been a pretty good low cost derivative of other mainstream laptops like HP and Dell. Looks very interesting; the mainstay will be how open the Droid platform will be with 3rd Party apps going forward to keep pace with Apple, possibly even an upcoming RIM going forward.

I like the Iconia, great design. Not that I would ever buy anything from Acer. They are radio shack/sears computers lol.

Radio Shack/Sears computers....lol?

Get a clue.

Big and ugly. Just like everything Android it seems.

At least you don't have Steve Jobs telling you how you should use your device and tell you what you can and can't put on it.
01:22 PM on 11/29/2010
He can't even do that. Ever heard of jailbreaking?

Tablet + Desktop combo equals the same price as equally geared laptop (as desktop), and is far more useful for 95% of the people (excluding the 5% that travel heavily and need laptops). I can see laptops being business only eventually, with most people preferring to use a combo, or just tablet and desktop.
01:40 PM on 11/28/2010
Most people get laptops because they want mobility only to find out they have no reason to take their computer anywhere else than their desk.

Too bad they never ask potential consumers what they want or listen when they discuss tech toys.  Most are missing an opportunity.  Why buy a tablet when it is no more than a scaled down computer with serious limitations or you can't leave your cell phone home to take the tablet with you on the go to do all things?

Until they make me something I can put into my pocket, has cell phone capabilities and I don't have to pay for an additional mobile plan to utilize it I won't be purchasing one.

People are insane if they are paying for a cell phone and tablet internet usage bill.  No telecom is getting that much of my money.

Apparently, they're only seeking customers who like fun more than they like work.

Apparently being a slave to pay for tablet data plans is fun in your mind? No thanks, there's a million other things that I'd rather spend those bucks on. Like a steak.

With blue tooth there are a couple pads that you can use as your cell phone. Im kinda going the other way with this....I think its a shame they aren't asking desktop and laptop users what they want. If those users used a pad they most definetely would be saying trash the touchpad/mouse and gimme a touchscreen os.

No I already have a smart phone and data plan but what I am not willing to do is add another plan for a tablet.  They had better find a way to merge the equipment for me to bite.

After awhile we will look like inspector gadget with the phone and tablet on us.  On top of it some of the features and services are duplicated.
12:33 AM on 11/25/2010
It sounds good but it's better to wait about six months and read the reviews from others. Plus there are more coming out in 2011, plus I am sure Apple will have a newer version with a camera and other features too. mainstreethost.com

Acer iconia dual screen tablet is over 6 pounds?!! A non-starter.
iPad and Sony X-series laptops are 1.6 pounds.

Leaked price of 2200 euros, or $3,000 USD!

That would be another non-starter.
