Congress's Unemployment Limbo 'A Terrible, Terrible Thing'

WASHINGTON -- Rona Wells of Las Vegas worries that she'll be homeless in no time if Congress fails to reauthorize extended unemployment benefits that are scheduled to expire next week.

"That's it. I'll be out on the street," Wells, 60, told HuffPost. "I have two checks left and those two checks are going to the rent. I'm not paying any bills, and so my bills are gonna be overdue, but I feel it's more important to have a roof over my head."

Wells said she lost her job as a telemarketer in January, along with 80 other people. "I was making very good money and they just closed the office," she said. "I came in on a Friday afternoon and right after lunch they said, 'Everybody go home.'"

She's been getting by thanks to the $375 she receives every week in unemployment benefits. The first six months were covered by the state. The federal government covered the next five as the first "tier" of a program called Emergency Unemployment Compensation, which, along with a program called Extended Benefits, provides up to 73 weeks of federally-funded jobless aid.

Those programs expire next week. About 800,000 people on Extended Benefits will be dropped almost immediately, according to the National Employment Law Project, and another 1.2 million will find themselves ineligible for the next tier of Emergency Unemployment Compensation over the course of December.

Nobody knows what to expect, but many suspect that Democrats will cut a strange deficit-busting deal with Republicans to preserve the benefits by attaching them to a reauthorization of expiring tax cuts for the rich. A coalition of 28 Senate Democrats led by Sen. Bob Casey (Pa.) sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) Wednesday urging a hasty reauthorization.

"For the past six decades, Congress has provided federally funded unemployment insurance benefits during every recession," the letter said. "Further, federal unemployment insurance benefits have always been provided until the economy was on a stable path of growth. In fact, the highest unemployment rate at which federally funded unemployment benefits were not extended was 7.2 percent."

Wells said her job search has been "horrible." The unemployment rate in Nevada is 14.2 percent, the highest of any state. "I've been sending out resumes every week," Wells said. "I've been sending out maybe about 50 a week, sometimes more, sometimes less, and nobody ever answers you."

Members of Congress have no understanding of what it's like to struggle to find work, she said. "They don't understand that. They go home to their comfy homes and wonderful families and they have a paycheck that's given to them by us," she said. "I hope they [reauthorize the benefits] not only for myself but for everybody that's out there suffering. It's just a terrible, terrible thing."

Wells said she'll be unable to afford her COBRA health insurance payment in December. She's particularly annoyed that members of Congress receive comprehensive health insurance on the taxpayer dime. (If they paid for it themselves, it would save a few million dollars every year.)

"I think it's time that they start paying for their own medical care," she said. "People who go to work have to have their money taken out to pay for their own health care. Why shouldn't Congress do it? Why should they get a free ride?"

This is a re-post. but I will continue re-posting it as long as necessary:

I think the tax cuts should all expire and the unemployment benefits should be extended for all of the unemployed Americans, including the 99ers.

In about 2 weeks unemployment benefits will end for 2 million Americans, who are unemployed through no fault of their own and cannot find work.  Never in our  Read More...

I agree with the last part. Congress should at least have money taken out of their paycheck to cover the cost (or partial cost, like many insured) of Health insurance. Many people simply do not make enough money to afford health insurance.

I promised myself I wouldn't look at the news regarding the extensions anymore. It is so demoralizing and frustrating. So many have made good points on here-we help others before we help at home, etc. I want to know why mainstream media is ignoring this? Maybe everyone is hoping we will all go away. What will it take to get the asses in Washington to help the very people that put them in office?
My benefits run out Dec. 4th and like Ms. Wells in the article I will have to choose between paying the mortgage or paying for my COBRA and other bills. I have been "lucky" in that respect as I was able to get the subsidized COBRA when it was available. When I lose it, I'm the same age she is so I'm screwed.
There is an organized group unemployedworkers.org that has an online petition you can sign. They have been delivering the petitions to both parties in hopes of getting the extensions through.
I did an interview with Arthur Delaney prior to Thanksgiving. If anything we have a voice with him. He seems to be the only one that is pushing our stories out to the media.

I've gone through every emotional stage in my personal job loss process. It stressed and finally destroyed a 4 year relationship, changed family and friendship ties forever, and finally reduced me to someone who doesn't regard myself as human any longer. I feel like there's nothing left, although there must be, surely there must be, I just can't see it yet.
11:02 AM on 12/04/2010
Take it easy on yourself. It's not your fault. I lost my job at the very beginning of this-- several months before the crash. Over 2 years I looked for a job and was rejected at ever stage. I thought of doing myself in many times. I finally got a horrible part time job, for very little pay, but enough to pay rent. I am starting a business, and looking at life in a new way. I've dumped my belongings, and become a minimalist, and a post-consumer, getting rid of my attachment to things and started to work a series of smaller jobs that make me happy and bring in income. I actually feel More like a human being now.

Thirteen trillion for the banks and wall street, but can't keep unemployed workers in buns and coffee. What does that say about this country?

No one should be cut off during a recession. They need to talk to the people and stop ignoring the 99ers. Their numbers are growing and they are not going to disappear. Their are not enough jobs to go around. People need income.

As a wife and mother of 4 children, I am very depressed over our government. We should not have to accept such a selfish trade off just to survive. Unemployment is my right as an american who pays taxes!
11:05 AM on 12/04/2010
But like Welfare it has a limited lifespan. You also can't get it under certain circumstances.

Honestly, I've been trying to avoid reading news on the Unemployment Extension because it's difficult and depressing for me to read. I've been trying to find a job for so long after being laid off from the video game industry. Today I received notice in the mail that mine has been exhausted. [sighs]

2 1/2 weeks ago I had to have my 14 year old cat put to sleep.

November has been a horrible, horrible month for me and I don't know what what to do now.

Believe me I feel for you. The Republicans feel for nobody. How can they deny Americans an extension of their well deserved Unemployment Benefits? Where's the outrage from our Democrats? Who is advocating for the American people? Do we need to have demonstrations in the streets? I suppose the Republicans are using the extension of unemployment benefits as a bargaining chip to get tax break extensions for the rich. Where's the justice in this?

It isn't just republicans, it is both parties. They are equally corrupt and in the pockets of the people they serve, the corporations. Unemployment is good for corporations. People desperate for work will work at lower wages, gm cut their workers 50%. Thirteen trillion for the banks and wall street, and they cannot keep unemployed workers from going hungry. Disgusting.
Yes, people need to demonstrate in the streets. I cannot believe the passive attitude of Americans. 80% are still employed, and I guess they can't care yet.
01:30 PM on 11/27/2010
I have been looking for a job since last November. I had to move from a job that was paying me barely enought to keep my son in daycare in order to keep my children safe from thier abusive father. I started recieving benefits in June 2010 and 8 DAYS after the Extension Elgibility (my benefits end November 28, 2010). I am praying to God that I get a job that I interviewed for a week ago. I had to have three interviews for the job and It will pay me even less than I made at my last job even though I have an associates and will be finished with my bachelors in May. What county am I living in where you can never get ahead no matter how much education and experience you have. I was fortunate to get a refund from my greedy university (after weeks of calling the students accounts department!) so I will be okay for this month and half of next month but what about next month!

I know how you feel and I'm so sorry for your situation. My son who is married with 2 children has a BS degree with 2 majors and was employed for 10 years and recieved raises and promotions constantly is now unemployed and doing some consulting work and teaching one class in junior college he would be happy to teach as many classes as he could, but the colleges in CA have cut classes out.. He has been out of work for about 3 years. He has a degree in Radio Television and Film and a degree in Media Management. His company was bought out and everyone was let go. He travels 2 1/2 hours each way to teach one class in Broadcasting per week and to do some music programming for a company that provides music to the airline industry. He was willing to substitute teach in LA unified school district. He took the Cbest test, passed with flying colors and when he called to make an appointment with the school district was told they can only hire teachers who were let go as substitutes, so that went down the drain. Thank God his wife is a teacher so they have health insurance through the school district. There are NO JOBS!! Everyone he knows from the Music Industry is out of work. My son and wife have filed for bankruptcy and are loosing their home. WE NEED JOBS!!!!

I forgot to mention that my husband and I have been helping them out with money each month, but it still isn't enough and to top it all off...My daughter- in-laws ex husband is not paying child support so my son and daughter- in law have been fighting him in court and have spent all their savings and still no child support from a man who hid all his money.

SOMEONE SHOULD BE TAKING NOTICE!!!
Even if they vote to extend the ~ window of time ~ CURRENT tiers can be filed.....
SOMEONE SHOULD BE NOTICING----the numbers that will continue to join
the ~~ CLUB of 99ers ~~....................
If they do not add extra weeks....the massive numbers of AMERICANS without
any lifeline at all---- will be the largest threat to our economy.
Many 99ers have had no income for over 9 months now.
THOUSANDS each month----will be joining that club.

The devil smiles wide with approval.....as God hangs his head with shame for the
actions in Washington.
THAT---------is NOT a good thing.
Hey!!!........ to all in DC.......there is only ONE ~~~ ACTUAL ~~~ God.
You will answer to HIM at the pearly gates.....I for one....wanna listen in, as he
condemns you to hell-------for ~ you ~....PLAYING GOD...here on earth.

But Black Friday sales were good... Some will say that means that the economy is coming back to life and UI extensions are not needed.

Could be something else though: Could be that many of the unemployed don't realize that UI extensions are about to be cut off. They may still think they have a couple of more tiers left.

it's down to the 26 weekers. Approx 350-400 K per week will start losing the 26 weeks. Already are.

2 extensions have been voted down ( by the Democrats btw) and there will not be any more. They MAY try to tie it to the tax cuts, but I wouldn't count on it.

Why is it that we have millions if not billions of dollars to aid foreign countries but to take care of our American citizens who are out of work through no fault of their own and paid taxes there is no help? How can the Republicans let politics rule their heartless minds? WE have millions of Americans who's lives have been devastated and the Repub. want to let them wither away. It's a DISGRACE! They should be ashamed of themselves and they're not....They should be run out of office!!

There's also an article here somewhere about JPMorgan Chase asking the feds for billions due to the WAMU takeover. Billions for Chase, none for workers? That would really be a kick in the teeth.

I have been a 99er since March.Like so many others,I have no material possessions of any value left. My faith in a loving God is the only thing that's saved my sanity.I pray that all of us will soon be rescued from this nightmare.Too many precious lives have been lost to illness caused by no medical care and even to suicide.I cry every time I think of dear Al,who couldn't take any more hurt and humiliation and finally ended his life.

hmmmmmmm.

temporary welfare for the unemployed (paid for by deductions from their checks to pay for the insurance)

IN EXCHANGE FOR

permanent welfare for the filthy rich. permanent, as in, forever.

congress. on public welfare, during and after their terms have ended. public salary, public health insurance, public pension, public perks, public expense accounts, public-paid staffs.

congress. almost ALL of whom already are or soon will be filthy rich, thus further benefiting from their vote to make their next welfare payments (permanent tax cuts) permanent.

now, no matter who you are, except a filthy rich person, this is assault and battery.

it is usury. it is robbery. it is lying, cheating, stealing.

in many cases, it will be an accessory to murder, or manslaughter, or neglect resulting in great bodily harm, injury or death of another.

almost all of those who COULD speak about this, and have the ear of the media that disseminates their words, are already rich or filthy rich.

so who will speak of this, and be heard?

WHO will publically cast shame and blame where they need to be cast?

i ended my belief in leadership a long time ago. have you had ENOUGH of leadership yet?

Yes, sad to say I think that you are completely correct.

I am one of the 99ers (since the end of March), and I am quite certain that there will be no help for the approximately 4.5 million current 99ers as well as those who are about to join our ranks. This is dispicable! -- Yet the GOP will stonewall any effort to help, and will insist upon tax cuts for the top 2% -- esitmated price tag: $700 billion over 10 years -- yet cannot see their way clear to helping millions simply survive.

Whomever Congress is representing, it sure as hHell ain't me, babe.

Presently trying to get into a housing program for recently homeless people that the social worker idiots are trying to use as a political football. It should be interesting to see who prevails.

Meanwhile all members of Congress can bite me. They are worthless.
