After promoting the good deeds of people around the world for months, CNN broadcast a tribute show to the year's top 10 heroes on Thanksgiving night.
The CNN Hero of the Year was announced during the show filming in Los Angeles on Sunday night.
Nepalese anti-slavery activist Anuradha Koirala was named the winner and awarded $100,000 for her organization. "Human trafficking is a crime, a heinous crime, a shame to humanity," she said when she was introduced. "I ask everyone to join me to create a society free of trafficking. We need to do this for all our daughters."
Other honorees received $25,000 each.
Thursday night was the first time the heroes' awards ceremony was shown in full. The show also included an appearance by the 33 Chilean miners, who took the stage to sing the Chilean national anthem after a standing ovation.
Bon Jovi, John Legend and Sugarland also performed.
