Glenn Fine Step Down

WASHINGTON — Justice Department inspector general Glenn Fine will step down in January after 10 years of critiquing some of the agency's most controversial actions.

Fine was IG during an especially tumultuous time for the Justice Department. During the Bush administration, he criticized some department tactics in the war on terror and the politically tainted firings of U.S. attorneys.

Fine and his investigators found that FBI counterterrorism executives issued improper blanket demands for records of nearly 4,000 telephone lines. He also concluded that department officials during the Bush administration broke the law by letting politics dictate the hiring of some career government lawyers.

Fine says it is time for him to pursue new professional challenges.
