Leslie Nielsen is dead.

Surely, he would have wanted us to remember him with the same joy and tears of laughter that he brought us throughout his career.

Here are 18 of his funniest deadpan jokes as Dr. Rumack in "Airplane!" and Detective Frank Drebin in the "Naked Gun" series. There are plenty of other great Nielsen lines from these films and others ... leave a comment with any favorites that aren't here.

Frank: It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girl dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

Jane: Goodyear?

Frank: No, the worst.

For me, the TV series Police Squad tops the movies for clever word play per minute. Example, from a kidnapping story:

Frank: "Is there a ransom note?"
Ed: "Yes, the butler found it; it was tied to this window and thrown into the rock garden. I sent the note to the lab; they're demanding one million dollars."
Frank: "Why would the lab demand a million dollars?"

Small, but well played, role in "nuts".

His best role was what I think was the forerunner to James T. Kirk, his role as a Captain in the classic sci fi movie "The Forbidden Planet".

"Do you speak French, Lt. Drebin?"

"No, but I do kiss that way"

Frank: A good cop - needlessly cut down by some cowardly hoodlums.
Ed: That's no way for a man to die.
Frank: No... you're right, Ed. A parachute not opening... that's a way to die. Getting caught in the gears of a combine... having your nuts bit off by a Laplander, that's the way I wanna go!

I saw Naked Gun in theaters. I was laughing so hard I almost lost consciousness, that's how good it was/still is. I'm truly saddened at Leslie Nielsen's passing. He was one of a kind, an understated genius at over-the-top comedy.

What a pity that the headline inaccurately portrayed Leslie Nielsen as a "comedian." He was a fine actor who, in the later part of his life, took on comedic roles, and was great at it. In his early life, he took on only serious roles. Maybe the Huff. Post writers are young and don't know he was an actor, not a comedian, but let's do some research, folks.

He was also the Captain in the Poseidon Adventure. And did some really cheesy "drama" roles on Fantasy Island in the late 70's.

Just a few tidbits of data. Mr. Neilsen was born in Regina Sask Canada to a RCMP officer. The family moved all over Canada on different postings - I understand he really enjoyed the Northwest Territories. His brother Eric as a member of the Canadian House of Commons (House of Reps equiv) and I understand was a straight laced no nonsense kind of guy. He serviced Parliament for years and was very respected person. Leslie Neilsen is considered a national treasure up here - nice to see so many kind comments
