WikiLeaks: Israel Iran Stance Vindicated, Says Netanyahu

Israel Iran

TEL AVIV, Israel — Israel's prime minister said Monday that newly leaked U.S. diplomatic memos provide clear proof that the Arab world agrees with his country's assessment that Iran is the chief danger to the Middle East.

According to the documents released Sunday by online whistle-blower Wikileaks, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia repeatedly urged the United States to attack Iran to destroy its nuclear program. The king is just one of many Arab voices in the documents calling for tough action against Iran – proof that Israel is not alone in its belief that Tehran is a growing menace to the region, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

"The greatest threat to world peace stems from the arming of the regime in Iran. More and more states, governments and leaders in the Middle East and in far reaches of the world understand this is a fundamental threat," Netanyahu told a news conference.

He also suggested that a unified front with Arab nations against Iran could bring a "breakthrough" in efforts to bring peace to the region.

Israel has long considered Iran the top danger in the Middle East, citing its development of medium-range missiles capable of striking Israel, its support for militant groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas, and most critically, its suspect nuclear program. The West, and many Arab countries, believe Iran is developing nuclear weapons. Tehran denies that.

An April 2008 memo detailed a meeting between General David Petraeus, the top U.S. military commander in the Middle East, and then U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, and King Abdullah and other Saudi princes.

At the meeting, the Saudi ambassador to the United States, Adel al-Jubeir "recalled the king's frequent exhortations to the U.S. to attack Iran and so put an end to its nuclear weapons program," the cable said.

"He told you to cut off the head of the snake," al-Jubeir was reported to have said.

The documents also said officials in Jordan and Bahrain have openly called for Iran's nuclear program to be stopped by any means and that leaders of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt referred to Iran "as `evil,' an `existential threat' and a power that `is going to take us to war.'"

Although the concerns of Gulf Arab states about Iran are known, the leaders of these conservative countries rarely offer such stark appraisals in public.

Netanyahu said it's clear that other countries in the region share Israel's assessment about Iran, "even if what they say in public is not what they always so in private."

If "leaders will say in public what they say in private there might be a breakthrough," he added. "Leaders should be ready to tell their people the truth."

Why does Isarel seem to be the only state on the planet that is happy with Wiki-leaks diplomatic gossip?
Very curious.

Anyone who knows anything about the area understands that a Shia regime such as Iran is seen as a primary threat by the Sunna regimes of Saudia,Yemen, etc...and so this is merely the natural reaction of one set of fundamentalists against another, which they feel opposes their religion. That doesn't mean they support Israel, by any stretch of the imagination.

Israel has been planning this for some time as indicated from the Raw Story exerpts below.

"Wiki-leak confirms reporting by veteran journalist Seymour Hersh"

"According to a diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks, in August 2007 the head of Israel's intelligence agency urged US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, R. Nicholas Burns, to join with Israel in carrying out a five-part strategy to implement regime change in Iran."

"Mossad Director Meir Dagan acknowledged at the meeting that the American analysis of Iran's alleged nuclear weapons program was different from Israel's, but he insisted that the threat from Iran was "obvious" and stated that Israel was willing to take action unilaterally."

Funny----reading the HP I see everyone having insisted sinister Israeli neocons were trying to convince the U.S. to go to war with Iran--------turns out it was the Arabs themselves pushing for war.
11:30 PM on 12/01/2010
well
you are israeli
you are pushing the US go to war with Iran

Whether that's sinister or not is up to interpretation I guess
11:55 PM on 12/01/2010
The Arab dictators. Yes. And Israel. Your point?
06:57 AM on 12/02/2010
My point is obvious for anyone who can get past their hate------the far left has repeatedly accused Israel of trying to get the US to go to war against Iran, no evidence of course. Now there is solid evidence all the surrounding Arab dictators want the US to go war with Iran and are pushing it.............no outrage on the part of Israel haters about this.
04:30 PM on 12/01/2010
So, it's not bad enough that Israel wants US to risk its blood and treasure in a futile war with Iran, now we have a bunch of corrupt Wahhabi dictators that are also the leading contributors of funds to Al Qaeda that want US to go to war for them.

Anyway, looks like, Israel is in good company.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha======the leaked documents showed the Arab World is pushing the U.S. to go to war with Iran, NOT ISRAEL
01:05 PM on 12/02/2010
Which "Arab world"?

3 or 4 government officials and/or rulers from 3 or 4 Arab countries does not equate to representing governments of 22 Arab countries.

And the majority of the Arab public, the people, are against any such misrepresentations, refer to the Arab public opinion polls.

These WikiLeaks show that Israel is the only country in the Middle East with an open and honest foreign policy: http://andreasmoser.wordpress.com/2010/12/01/wikileaks-and-israel/ . A lesson which we should keep in mind for further Middle East negotiations.

Arab dictators might see Iran as the biggest threat, in line with the US and Israeli view as the cables show which really exposes their contempt for democracy. 80% of the actual Arab population (not the dictators as quoted in the leaks) sees Israel and then America as the biggest threats while only 10% see Iran as the most serious threat.

You think Wikil leaks with all its "data dumps" of "information" out of perspective, is something important, real, worthwhile, positive and "legitimate?"

So far, and aside from the horrid video of U.S. soldiers shooting innocents from a helicopter, there has been nothing, really nothing leaked that was not already common knowledge.

How did I try to delegitimize wiki? What you talkin bout, Willis?

Netanyahu is either willfully ignorant or deceptive. I choose deceptive. The Arab countries are against the rise of Iran for reasons that have nothing to do with Israel but everything to do with protecting their own dictatorial monarchies. These countries are literally family run businesses and they use the US military for protection. Iran is not an Arab country and not of the Sunni sect of Islam as the Arab countries It is Shia. But America loves oil and is able and willing. Netanyahu knows he is embellishing the real facts.

If stating that Iran is the greatest threat to the security of the Middle East by offering examples of Arab fears and desires for it's attack and decapitation, from their own mouths, is embellishment to you, well, then, I do not think that word means what you think it means.

A different take on what the comments (which, BTW, the Saudi government is denying were actually made) mean.  From the opinion peice titled 'What will the Arab public think'

Confidential cables by American diplomats in the region, revealed by WikiLeaks, expose weak and fearful Arab leaders who are dependent on US protection against real and imagined fears over Iran's potential possession of nuclear arms and its influence in the Arab world.
Although the hostility of Arab leaders towards Iran is not a secret, the documents published by a number of Western newspapers show that some Arab governments appear more concerned with Iran than Israel; for while Israel is seen as an enemy that occupies Arab land and may cause instability in the region, Iran is feared as a country that could mobilise Arab public support against their leaders.
In their conversations with American officials, Arab leaders refer to Iran as "a snake", "evil" and "an octopus whose tentacles need to be severed" - presumably they are far more cautious in their labelling of Israel when talking to US diplomats.

.the word is getting out and rather quickly at that that Wikileaks is an Israeli op and is being funded by George Soros.

Everything about this last big leak is benefiting Israel and playing into their anti-Iran propaganda.

I can't believe how easily people are gobbling up wikileaks just because it "appears" to be exposing the truth and not one question about what is motivating them.

You watch...when wikileaks hits the so called banks, you can bet they will be exposing the "corruption" of George Soros's competition.
