WikiLeaks Documents: World Leaders SLAMMED In Confidential Wires (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 11/29/10 11:56 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

WikiLeaks' unprecedented release of classified material is embarrassing U.S. leaders and their foreign counterparts alike, with unflattering and often churlish assessments of some world leaders -- many of them U.S. allies -- included within the various documents.

Among the many comments: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is compared to Adolf Hitler, while Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev fare slightly better as "Batman and Robin," respectively. In addition, Italy's scandal-plagued Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was called "feckless, vain and ineffective as a modern European leader," while French President Nicolas Sarkozy is "an emperor with no clothes."

Though the Obama administration had been bracing for the "Cablegate" release since last week, MSNBC reports many of the potentially offended countries such as France remain "very much in solidarity with the American administration," according to French government spokesman Francois Baroin.

Vote on the most damning insult to a world leader as revealed by WikiLeaks here:

French President Nicolas Sarkozy

The Herald Sun reports that Sarkozy was mocked as "an emperor with no clothes" who has "has a thin-skinned and authoritarian personal style."

Ya, the Isreali newspaper comment was really original but Qadhafi's nurse is quite funny--she probably only takes care of his "rooster".

I think Qadhafi has the best write up.

Obviously none of these diplomats ever read Harriet The Spy, or they wouldn't have been writing nasty things behind other people's backs.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan as governing with "a cabal of incompetent advisors"- Let me rephrase this, but this time correctly.

Obama as governing with "a cabal of incompetent advisors".

As the dates aren't included, how do you know they were fron the Obama era and not from Bush's. I know the silliness about Canada were mainly written during Bush's time.

All the same, Merkel being slammed for being too risk-aversive is absolutely hilarious coming from the United States. Which country is in good economic shape and which one is not?

Germany is in better shape............... this country takes stupid unprofitable basket case risks like Iraq and Afghanistan while the rest of the world quietly smiles at the non-leaders running this country........

Paul Krugman is one of DE' s the biggest critics. Makes one wonder if his positions are based on belief, jealousy, or racism.

So? Is any of this new? All of these guys have been described as such and even worse by the global press.

As for the "leaks" there was nothing we did not already know about our feckless and false "leaders."

I am beginning to think this is a hyped up nothing story. That Wikileaks is a promotional and meaningless gig with all its "data dumps."

How about going back to real investigative reporting so information can be gather, analyzed and reported within a perspective -- instead of meaningless data dumps with no perspective and no meaning.

Wikileaks is likely a fake and a stunt. And perhaps does more harm to getting to the truth than help.

The global press is not speaking for our government. .....the global press speaks for profit-making corporations. Our diplomats are supposed to be speaking for the American people, and since I like to travel, I would prefer that they not make me seem like an ugly American.

A lot of truths and good calls here. While the leak is embarrassing, these examples have given me more confidence in the assessments of our diplomats.

Ahmadinejad probably got slammed the worst by being called "like Hitler".

He's not even Jewish...

Instead of turning this into entertainment newz shouldn't you be reporting the things revealed that actually shed light on our relationships or expose real corruption?

Maybe its beacuse there isn't anything to expose or shed light on - its sounds more like office gossip, Most of those comments aren't revelations, and no one mentioned would be surprised by any of it, do you really thinks they are all BFFs and are going to quit talking to each other, start WWIII over caddy comments? Some might even like thier characterization -Putin as Batman. Assange so far hasn't had anything all that relevant or a bombshell, Maybe our government is smarter than we give them credit, docs might have been classified but nothing truely damanging appears to be included, there is also different degrees of "classified" and he didn't seem to hit any pay dirt.

Did we really think these world leaders were somehow respected or loved by anyone? Here's my "leak" for the record. Canada's PM Harper is a man with no ears, or so it seems. He's also a peon in the worst way, threatening to weaken institutions Canadians have held dearly for over half a century, like universal health care.

I find the comments on Merkel hilarious. Yes, she is risk-averse, and Germany just happens to have one of the few solid economies left in the world. Or would it have been better if Germany had played fast and loose with its citizens' assets? I commend Germany for its fiscal conservatism. In the mid-nineties I had a native speaking German professor who told us that Germans did not use credit cards. When they wanted to buy something, they saved up until they had the cash for it.
10:49 AM on 11/30/2010
Agreed. Mrs. Merkel is one smart lady.

It is her style that is not understood. Anyone who calls her risk adverse does not understand the subtleties of German politics since the 1980's. If she were risk adverse she never would have survived as long as she has, nor would she be where she is.

This is what happens when diplomats get their jobs by contributing to a particular political party.

I suppose they get some tutorial on using the right fork and bowing to royalty and stuff like that, but didn't anybody tell them to not insult world leaders OUT LOUD in places that could be discovered and used against our country and our government?

I don't know how the idea got started that "venting" is good for the psyche. It creates all kind of problems that wouldn't be happening if people used a little ...errrrr...diplomacy, a little common sense, a little empathy and a little foresight.
