why all the uproar over something 12 years away?! I think its about time some non-traditional soccer countries get a chance to host the World Cup.
it will be very interesting to see if those stadiums get built in such a grand fashion. if anyone even remembers to check 5-years from now.

I am not a soccer fan, but I have hear and read that the Soccer World wants more US involvement in soccer because of the money that would come along with a strong US presence.  I believe that the US set a record for ticket sales when the World Cup was last there.  Now they are going to have the 2022 cup in a country the size of Connecticut that can have temperatures in the 130 range?  Not to mention that is in a region that has a lot of conflict and I am guessing an infrastructure no capable of handling this event.  I also believe Qatar has not qualified for the cup for a along time,

The US has everything need to put on a spectacular event and draw more interest in soccer...

Personally I could care less because I am a College/NFL guy, but who knows, even an NFL fellow like me might take more of a look if the product was made more appealing.  From what I can see, it appears that FIFA is a pretty corrupt outfit.  Set aside the US for a moment.  When the UK loses to QATAR then something is pretty wrong.

Looks like some gorgeous stadiums, and I love the music for the first one.

Of course, most of the construction work will be done by,
as everyone knows, South Asian slave labor.
That is the putrid truth regarding most of these Gulf states.

I will try again tomorrow.

You are exactly right about the labor practices there. Perhaps this can put a spotlight on that, and get the laborers some relief during the development. Let's hope.
06:17 AM on 12/05/2010
First of all slavery was something introduced to the world by the wonderful US of A, here in Qatar we like to pay our consturcution workers, and i dont really tihnk it makes a difference if they came from South Asia or Iceland for that matter, as long as the job gets done and they get paid whats it to you?
11:41 PM on 12/06/2010
Slavery existed long before the US of A even existed. It sounds like you have a scathing hatred of the US of A, and an obvious ignorance regarding the history of slavery. Of course the construction jobs will get done and the workers get paid, but the question is how much will they get paid and what are their working and living conditions like in these Gulf states. They're treated like second class citizens and live in sickeningly squalid settlements. You should get you head out of the Arab sand, because you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about.

They can hopefully buid things. Even if the stadia are impressive, the selection of this country is silly. 115+ degrees F with high humidity. How many visitors will be hospitalized or die ?

How can they claim to be eco friendly when they have to use AC for all the stadiums and practice fields ?

I guess the beer sponsor will be missing from the stadium. There will be few bars and the ones that are there will be super expensive in the hotels.

Will women have to becareful how they dress ( I know they are more lenient but still not to Western standards) ? I guess they will temporaily susspend some rules.

The state is as big as Rhode Island. With 1.7 million people, can they handle 300K in visitors and press. Security and security forces is likely to be an issue. We have one thing in common with them, money rules !

yeah because tourists who visit Dubai (even higher humidity) and Oman regularly are hospitalised or die... most places are air-conditioned.. and if you think the WC village that they will setup will be just open air or have no cooling system in place then you must not be that bright

Great, now if they knew how to play football or if someone, somewhere knew that they even had a team I wouldn´t feel so disappointed with this. Isn´t the World Cup still about football and wouldn´t there be plenty of real football nations willing to organize the event?

Strange coincidence...

Putin's gang exterminated Chechen Terrorist Boss in Qatar...

wow this happened a good 6 years ago - what on earth does this have to do with football? ignorance must be bliss for you all
10:30 AM on 12/03/2010
Some people are like $%$^%$^%$^ ! Hmmm, is 2018 and 2022 the END of Fifa World Cup... Commonnnnn... I mean why all the hatred and super gigantic show of ignorance on this decision. After all, football is all about passion and humor, you will get it all in Russia and Qatar. Most of those bad comments are not even from football fans, I bet.

Congratulations Qatar and Russia!

If you average the Russian temperatures and the Qatar temperatures you get a pretty reasonable climate.

With all their oil money these sheikhdoms could just build a gigantic island paradise homeland for the Palestinians and solve the whole Middle East conflict.

How about they build an island for Israel so they can "resettle" there, since those pesky Arabs are seemingly always going to be in the way of Israel's expansionism and imperialism.. maybe an Island for Israel is going to cure that insatiable hunger for more land... Sounds like a great idea.

I was just suggesting that the Arabs could respond with a small gesture of humanity to their own suffering people. I guess that's way too much to ask for.

I hope they A/C all their stadiums, as 48 deg C in July is impossible to bear in a sport such as football, which requires a lot more physical engagement than, say, lazy baseball. One problem they may have is that Qatar is not big enought to sustain 8 -12 stadiums necessary to accommodate all the groups in the WC. The automatic qualification of the Qatar national team will also be a problem, as they will be quickly dispatched by the football superpowers.

I've seen Qatar. It's a small city and very underdeveloped in many ways still. They are Dubai redux only not quite as liberals. Many underpaid laborers and a nighmare for people like teachers who try to work there. I knew one who went to Qatar and had her passport taken away by her employer; the U.S. state department had to get involved to get her out. These places are not what they appear. This is a poor choice in just so many ways.

LOL you are right. Doha is the name of the city. However, it is the only place that is actually a city per se in the proper sense (the entire country has a population smaller than the city of Munich), so a lot of people just say Qatar instead of Doha, Qatar.

What incredibly bad choices, Qatar is not even a football country and has never fielded a team..WHY were they even there? On the road to being the next Dubai, for Dubai it was golf and capturing the ICC headquarters, only now they are bust...so good luck with that, Qatar.

Of Russia the less said the better. Putin the Almighty wanted it and so it was done. End of story. At least there is football is Russia but not exactly top ten or even top twenty football.

I badly wanted it to go to Spain, as a nice gesture to the incumbents and because their economy could use the boost. Australia has never hosted it either and they should have gotten a chance.

Worst. Choices. Ever.

Only a bad decision if you're basing it on emotive ideas like you are. In actual fact it is about who can pull off the competition most successfully. This includes a) quality of facilities; b) number of people that will likely go; c) safety; d) amount of money it will generate.

If that was the case, then England or the U.S. would have been chosen. You think Qatar can stage a more successful cup than England? The U.S. holds the record for most tickets sold at a World Cup. So I know where your coming from, but if it's about who can stage the most successful, based on the criteria you set, it would not be Qatar, or Russia. It would have been England, or the U.S.

Qatar has fielded teams for years, they just haven't qualified.

Let's give both countries a chance to show that they can host a great tournament.

It will also give a lot of us a chance to travel to places we probably wouldn't ever see in our lifetime under normal circumstances.

Besides, if I want to, I can see world-class football/soccer every week for just the cost of a bus ride and a ticket -- so not holding the World Cup in England is hardly the end of the world as we know it.

The Brits are very sore losers (despite FIFA's legendary corruption and payola)! They play a dreadful form of football (low on skills and too many long balls) and, only because they investend the darn game, they think they are good enough, when all evidence indicates the opposite.

I expected Russia to win, but for FIFA to choose Qatar is clearly motivated by money.

The heat issue alone should have disqualified them from bidding.

It's a business, what do you expect?
09:10 AM on 12/03/2010
It's not technically a business. FIFA is a governing body.
09:59 AM on 12/03/2010
Agreed. Even with the stadiums churning out A/C, fans will be stuck either indoors or in a stadium for the entire span of the event thanks to the scorching heat.
04:06 AM on 12/05/2010
yeah because no tourists visit the Gulf during the summer huh?
