Chase Boruch Accused Of Killing His Mother, Sally Pergolski

University of Wisconsin student Chase Boruch was arrested Monday for allegedly murdering his mother Sally Pergolski, 63, in early June, and is currently being held on a $2 million bond, reports the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel. Boruch, and Iraq veteran, has been charged with first degree intentional homicide and if convicted, he faces a lifetime in prison.

The Wisconsin Rapids Tribune reports that on Jun. 6, Boruch told authorities that he was accompanying his mother on an early morning fishing trip when she lost control of the truck she was driving and crashed it into a nearby lake. According to the Tribune, Boruch claimed he had tried to resuscitate an unconscious Pergolski before calling the police.

Investigators began to doubt Boruch's account, however, upon discovery that Pergolski had suffered brain trauma two hours prior to the crash. Her death was ruled a homicide, and Boruch -- who had previously taken out close to $1 million worth of life insurance for Pergolski which named him as primary beneficiary -- a suspect.

Those who knew Boruch at the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County, where he was a student before transferring to the Madison campus this fall, told the Wasau Daily Herald that they were shocked by the news. UWMC assistant dean of student services Nolan 'Whiz' Beck ssaid that Boruch "was very dedicated to his schooling," adding that he "had a lot of associates on campus. He was involved in many endeavors, and he seemed to have a lot of support from students, particularly other veterans."

Boruch made the dean's list twice and received the James Mealey Memorial Scholarship at UWMC.

A hearing of the case will take place on Dec. 9.
