The Best Cookbooks Of 2010

First Posted: 12/05/10 07:44 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:10 PM ET

There's no shortage of Best Cookbooks of 2010 lists, so rather than pretending any one list has successfully captured every great cookbook of 2010 (they haven't), or asking you to trust just ours, we've pored over the best of the Best Cookbooks of 2010 lists. What follows are the Best Cookbooks of 2010, the HuffPost rendition: every cookbook must have been included in at least two of the following Best Cookbooks of 2010 lists:

With one exception to the rule: four cookbooks chosen by our humble publication's Food page (HuffPost Food Editor's Picks) but overlooked on these other lists were granted inclusion (or is that four exceptions?). It should go without saying that any one of these would make a fine holiday gift for the food lover(s) in your life.

And don't forget to check out the Best Cocktails-and-Spirits Books of 2010.

Yottom's " Plenty" really is amazing---basic CA cuisine, but still, I love it and Blue Chair, which is a Bay Area native, woot. woot.

Perfect example why we are a country of sick, overweight and hostile people... I can't decide
if the masses are ignorant or lazy.

I was disappointed to NOT see one of Corrine Trang's books...Her "Noodles Every Day" is a wonderful introduction to fusion noodle recipes...

None of these would I buy. Thai Street Food looks kind of interesting.

I'd suggest "Vij's at Home", second book by Vancouver restauranteur Vikram Vij. For some reason it's not supposed to be released in the U.S. until next year, but it's been available for several months in Canada (amazon.ca). First book tended toward very rich "restaurant style" cooking--this one however seems great for the home cook, great info, nice content, interesting, warm & personal.

The ultimate best "cookbook" is Anne Willan's
"La Varenne Pratique: The Complete Illustrated Cooking Course"--

It is what it says it is: a complete cooking course, rather than just a recipe book.

Despite the French in the title, the book is in English
(Ecole de Cuisine La Varenne is Willan's culinary school in Paris).
This large book is copiously illustrated,
but with functional photos on types of food and how to prepare them,
rather than gourmet showpiece photographs.
It is no longer in print, but used copies can be found
on addall.com and possibly sometimes on ebay..

Anne Willan has several other great cookbooks,
but La Varenne Pratique is unique and outstanding
in that it is truly a full course in cooking;
naturally there are some excellent recipes,
but rather than being unusual or showpiece dishes,
she has very carefully chosen these as basic examples
to illustrate how and why various ingredients are combined in particular ways.

I use the internet a lot to find recipies but I still love getting cookbooks, I love buyging them and reading on weekends for hours, I get many good ides and make up my own stuff but I follow recipes as well, I just hate it when they have 400 ingredients, sometimes its easier to buy the thing made than cook for a day and hopefully enjoy it

Check your local library. There are actually a couple of cook books on cooking on a tight budget. One has $5 meals, I think. I'm in the same boat (not actually unemployed, but dirt poor right now). My family has told me to cut down on the beans. Too much farting at work/school.

At Home with Madhur Jaffrey should be in there. Thai Street Food looks great. I'll have to track that one down.

I looked up Thai Street Food on Amazon and there were a couple of reviews that said it had way too many glossy pictures not related to the food, perhaps to justify the high price tag, and that it seemed more like a coffee-table book than a useful kitchen-cookbook. One person recommended the author's other book, Thai Food, instead, which other reviewers and professional reviewers seemed to think is authoritative.

I'm cooking out of her book right now. It is the BEST Indian cookbook ever - and the recipes are soooo easy and delicious.

Great compilation. It seems half of these are on my wish list and a few others I already own. Another good vegetarian book for the post below is Tal Ronen's The Conscious Cook (maybe that was 2009 and I was just slow to buy).

Didn't see a vegetarian cookbook. If you are in the market for one, take a look at the comments on amazon.com for "American Wholefoods Cuisine. " There is good reason this book has been in print since 1983 and is dubbed "the vegetarian Joy of Cooking."

Don't forget online "cook books". My 16 yr old introduced me to http://foodgawker.com/. Very cool site just doesn't have any coffee table appeal. ;)
