PORTLAND, Ore. (RNS) Mohamed Mohamud was born into chaos, his family fleeing a bloody civil war in Somalia to a crowded refugee camp in Kenya. The family left behind a comfortable city lifestyle, scrambled for survival, and then eventually was reunited in the United States.

But now, nearly two decades after fleeing the bloodshed in Mogadishu, the family is again facing wrenching despair as Mohamud, 19, stands accused of plotting to detonate a van full of explosives outside a crowded Christmas tree lighting ceremony on the day after Thanksgiving.

Before their flight to safety in Kenya, the teen's father, Osman Barre, was a professor of computer engineering with a knack for languages. His mother, Mariam Barre, was a businesswoman who worked in banking.

The family got separated in the exodus from Somalia, with the father ending up in a sprawling refugee camp and the mother and baby stranded behind. For more than 18 months, Barre had no idea whether they were alive.

Osman Barre fled Mogadishu in early 1992 with 21 members of his extended family to the Utange refugee camp outside Mombasa, Kenya. The camp, which grew to 40,000 refugees, taxed international officials as they tried feed everyone. Barre pitched in, teaching United Nations officials to speak Somali.

The United States was one of the countries offering asylum. The family, with no kin in the U.S., gained the sponsorship of several churches in the Portland area.

After 18 months in the camp, the 22 Somalis arrived at Portland International Airport at midnight on Oct. 27, 1993. Barre never gave up searching for his wife and son as he melded into American life.

"It was our responsibility to help them find a place to live, get to appointments and get settled," said Sylvia Eagan, then pastor at the Peace Church of the Brethren. "Only four of five of them spoke any English."

It didn't take long for her to appreciate Barre and the rest of the family. "I can't say enough about what wonderful people they are," Eagan said. "They went through a very hard time."

Eagan and Eileen Wilson, another member of the church, found the family temporary housing, helped them get food stamps, taught them to ride the bus and steered them to free English lessons for immigrants.

Barre, who was 32, scrambled to find work. A former professor at Mogadishu University who speaks five languages, he got a job on the floor of a bottling plant. But he kept searching for a position that matched his skills and education.

"He's an intelligent man," Eagan said. "He was very willing to do whatever he needed to do to start at the bottom and work up."

Regularly, he would go to Eagan's house to call a contact near the refugee camp, trying to track down his 21-year-old wife and son. "He wanted very badly for them to come," Wilson said. "He was going to do whatever it took to get her here."

Around 1995, Barre was hired as an engineer at Intel. Then there was more good news: His wife and son were coming to Portland. Eagan, who took him to the airport, recalled Barre as a bundle of joyful nerves.

Mohamed Mohamud, about 5 years old when he emerged from the plane, was shy around his father.

"Osman was overjoyed to have them with him again," Eagan said. "He was very proud of his son and his daughter, who was born the first year after his wife arrived."

The family settled into life in suburban Beaverton, home to a large community of Somali immigrants. Mariam Barre, gracious and intelligent, quickly learned English, Eagan said, landing a job at a company that contracts with the U.S. Postal Service.

Mohamud, who has a different surname from his father (which is typical in Somalia), was known in school as "Mo Mo" or "Mo squared." He had an easy smile, quick joke and enthusiasm for basketball, friends say, and was known as a class clown.

The changed during his sophomore year, when friends say he buckled down.

"He had a whole new perspective on life," classmate James Hickey said. "Everything was really serious. He was getting straight As."

It was at that time that he started thinking about jihad, he later told the FBI, according to court documents. Mohamud went through extreme phases, bouncing from being a party boy to a pious teen. At times he advocated his religion, saying it was the best in the world.

Although Mohamud had a wide circle of friends from a wide range of backgrounds, the closest were Muslim immigrants, schoolmates say.

He didn't talk much about his family, who embraced American life while maintaining relationships in the Somali community and an observant Muslim lifestyle.

In his junior physics class, students had to give presentations on the workings of a mechanical device. Several students picked staplers; Mohamud discussed the intricacies of a rocket-propelled grenade.

"That's what a lot of terrorists were using," said Ross Thoresen, a classmate. "The fact that he's a Muslim and then does (the project) on the RPG" made everyone wonder about him.

"He was nice on the outside," said Wesley Naylor, who saw the RPG presentation, "but you could see that there was something iffy about him."

When he graduated and enrolled at Oregon State University to study engineering, his father was thrilled. "He was very proud of him being such a good student and doing so well," said Eagan, the pastor who helped settle the family.

But around campus, he became known as a drinker, smoker and partier. In October 2009, he was accused of date rape by a student after late-night revelry at a fraternity house. Police investigated but did not pursue charges.

Occasionally, he worshipped at Salman Alfarisi Islamic Center in Corvallis.

"He would come once a month or once every two months," said Imam Yosof Wanly. "It was minimal."

About this time, according to the FBI, Mohamud sought to go abroad to train to become an Islamic terrorist. He told undercover agents that his parents -- and a spot on the do-not-fly list -- stopped him.

Osman and Mariam Barre, who were having problems of their own, separated about a year ago. But they were worried about their son becoming radicalized, said Isgow Mohamed, head of the Northwest Somali Community Organization in Portland.

Osman Barre reported his son to the authorities, Mohamed said.

"When you have a feeling that your son will end up dying on the street, you'd rather put him in a jail than on a suicide mission," Mohamed said.

Mohamud attended classes last spring, but dropped out in October. The morning of the planned bombing, he appeared to be in a jovial mood, insisting on buying coffee for Muslim students. The next day, he was behind bars.

The news has bewildered and shocked former classmates, friends and associates.

"I was just crushed," said Eagan, thinking of Mohamud's father. "I knew how proud he was of his son. Regardless of whether he is found guilty or not, this is a devastating blow for a parent to have their child in this situation. He had big dreams, like all parents do, for his children."

These cases are more to come as American invasions and systemic bombings are leaving my children in shock and dismay. Who will care for them and what of their psychological makeup after witnessing death and destruction?
They are prone perhaps to schemes to hurt those that hurt them. And thus, a new generation of Muslims will have revenge on their minds from Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and now Yemen. Their targets-Americans!
Many narrow minded Americans feel that drone attacks and systemic killings and wiping out families will stamp out terror. This is the wrong take on this matter. Instead, these incursions have increased the strength of the islamic insurgencies ten fold.
A Muslim that takes a path out of misguidance, especially in the west will pay for it with his life.
If this Muslim and other Muslims like this are better served in joining Mujahideen to engage their enemies on the battle field and not in stores or planes.
The misguidance is when these young Muslims strap on bombs and kill innocent persons. Or go on planes with innocent and non combatants on board and attach bombs to it, this is misguidance and outside of the shari'ah.
The fight is in Muslim lands, and the NATO and US forces are engaging Mujahideen to see who will finally control our lands. The fight is there! Not in the cities of America, for these are non combatants and not subject to be touched according to shari'ah law.
May Allah swt help him!

Many good and strong Muslims are trying to establish camps and seminars to combat the growing anger of the young Muslimeen in America. They address this issue as one of terror and trying to discourage these young Muslims from joining these groups.
What is missing in these camps is the failure of the Amirs in these camps and seminars to address the American role and invasions in Muslim lands. They main concentration is on denouncing terror but not the causes of terror.
This is a fatal flaw in these well meaning camps. In most cases, the young Muslims go away from these camps still angry and the message runs from one ear and out the other.
Until well meaning US imams, shaykhs gather themselves and challenge their government's on going wars, subjugation and killing of innocent Muslims in Muslim lands; without addressing this issue, their message will continue to reign hollow.
In Muslim lands when we see and hear about US young Muslims going the opposite direction of the Islamic tenets, it hurts. We understand

Be wary of Infidel.
If anyone offers to commit heinous crimes in the name of Allah--- report them to FBI.
if you read any Jihad literature on the Internet-- report it..
if any Jihadist recruiter whispers sweet martyrdom nothings in your ear at the mosque-- call FBI.

re."At times he advocated his religion, saying it was the best in the world."
Stop!!! Right there!
this is THE primary reason why he became a failed Jihadist.
Next come feverish Internet searches for like-minded; dreams of glorious victories for Allah, thirst to punish the infidel and the rest of Islamic extremist bunk.
10:01 AM on 12/20/2010
He is not a failed jihadist, jihadist is not in the Arabic language and certainly the meaning that you and others like you use as, is not the meaning in Arabic.
This young man and other young Muslims are angry and want to fight to stop the killing and systemic destruction of Islam in Muslim lands.
What he has alleged to have done is misguidance. This is a serious issue in many masajids in the US. Until the imams address both the terror generated from American invasions and incursions in Muslims lands, these cases will continue, since the young men are not listening to their imams but they are listening to Amirs and their representatives in Islamic insurgent groups.
You can urge and call any police or FBI on Muslims for expressing their beliefs but they will not stop this growing problem because it is bigger than a cops and robbers issue.
Well educated Muslims are being hounded in the masajids of America by FBI Agent provocateurs, trying to force Muslims to join in on a terror capers.
Many Muslims have reported these cases to the police and the agent provocateur continues on trying to throw terror plots down the throats of American Muslims. In essence, this is not right!
The terror plots of substance will not be generated inside the masajids of America, but hatched outside America. This is the real battle.
Calling and telling on innocent Muslims to police as terrorist, is only going to make it worse!

I would like to congratulate and thank the author of this article, Lynne Terry, for the in-depth backgrounder on the the alleged Portland bomber. This piece provides information that goes a long way toward revealing who the bomber is. In my opinion, one does not find on the net in one location such an extensive amount of pertinent information about similar suspects.

Son, if all Muslims believed in this foolishness, you wouldn’t be alive today, a fact, we would be waging wars in all corners of the world.
=======

Is that bragging? It is pretty unseemly and obnoxious.

And as near as I can tell, Muslims ARE waging wars (or creating havoc) in all corners of the world: Sudan, Nigeria, Kenya, Somalia, Algeria, Indonesia, East Timor, China, Russia, Iraq, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Thailand, Philippines, Uruguay, Venezuela, Pakistan, Afghanistan. And even on the streets in Europe. Even in Sweden. Anyplace where there are sufficient numbers of Muslims to form a critical mass.

My parents were victims of American bombs...My parents lives were destroyed by yes 'American Foreign policy"…even worse artillery
=============

So they lived in a war zone? And were attacked by the US then? Somehow, I am skeptical.

You seem to be so immersed in all of this BS, you read about OBL, and these guys…like they are real danger, (get a life) son
=================

So the West should not defend itself? The West whose benefits you enjoyed? If it was not defended, the West and its freedoms would not exist. Did you not study history?

"Get a life"?? You really think that is a useful argument?

maybe one day a Saladin will bring us together for the better...
========

Again this is a veiled threat. You do know that the Islamic military leader Muslims are so proud of was KURDISH right? Kurds are hated by Muslims.
01:29 AM on 12/11/2010
Manny, is there a conclusion to be drawn from this list? If so, I missed it.
02:02 PM on 12/11/2010
Never mind. I got it.
02:50 PM on 12/10/2010
How many times does one have to tell you OBL doesn’t speak for the 1.5 billion Muslims alive today…
========
No one claimed that OBL speaks for all 1.5 billion (or however many) Muslims there are.

And although there were some weak denouncements of OBL after 911, for the most part the Muslim ummah has been silent, or complicit, or worse.

Did you know that >70% of Muslims named their male babies Osama in Nigeria for months after 911? That Muslims in Palestine and elsewhere in the Islamic world celebrated 911? ( see http://www.snopes.com/rumors/cnn.asp ) Even at the madrassas near me, teachers, students and the principle came out to loudly proclaim in several interviews what a wonderful thing that 911 was and that they hoped there would be more Muslim terrorist attacks that would kill as many Americans as possible. Some Muslim groups named the hijackers "The Magnificent 19" and made posters: http://articles.cnn.com/2003-09-10/world/sept.11.ukposter_1_muslim-community-al-muhajiroun-british-muslim?_s=PM:WORLD

So actually, there were a lot of Muslims who were proud of what OBL did.

But where are the marches by Muslims against OBL? Protests? Demonstrations? Fatwahs? Threats? Hangings or burnings in effigy? Marches? Candelight vigils? Letter writing campaigns? Anything?

Muslims sure protest everything else; cartoons, knighting Salman Rushdie, Pope remarks, naming a teddy bear Mohammed, aborted koran burnings, etc. And they do it loud, shouting how they want to kill.

He didn't know how good he had it compared to
the people he sought to murder.
Now he will.

America's relations with the Somali Diaspora took a serious nose dive when Bush approved of and supported the Ethiopian invasion of Somalia, destroying the only 6-8 months of stability Somalia has had in 20 years.

I know of many Somalis in America who had returned to Somalia to start businesses and rebuild, only to hear of Bush's War on Terror led to Ethiopian troops and approaching American gunships.

You cannot measure the effects of the Bush admin's destruction of the hopes, dreams, goodwill, and good intentions of millions of Somalis, not to mention the deaths, injuries, suffering, and displacement. The fact that Mahamud and other youth have developed a sense of vengence and rage towards America is measurable, however.

Americans have to face responsibility and accountability for its foreign policies. Pretending to target Muslims and Islam will never excuse or absolve America or distract people of America's accountability to peoples in distant lands.
Keep pretending and it will all go away, and maybe Sarah Palin with become president if yer lucky- u betcha.

We are still learning about the motivation of this jihadist, but my guess is that we know the fundamentals.

Somewhere along the line, the son came to believe something his mother and father did not believe about their obligations to Islam and their obligations to America.

If, as seems to be the case, our enemies are able to recruit young Muslims residing in America to their cause, we need to understand how that happens and what the recruit comes to believe that would make him want him to blow up civilians including children.

I assume the vector is the internet and the ideology is the Islamist interpretation of Islam that teaches the necessity of jihad for the ultimate domination of all religions by Islam.

What can be done?

Identifying the ideology of the enemy can make our security authorities more effective in keeping the wrong kind of Muslim from gaining entry to the country. Relying on parents to turn in their children is not good enough.

American Muslims can rede

fine the obligations of American Muslims to Islam and to America. Some already are:

From just this article about this one person, he doesn't really sound like the devout fanatic the would fit a profile. He sounds more like a misfit who couldn't quite figure out where he fit in, in a mosque, or in a club partying.

The swings sound like someone who has a mental and emotional problems, and would be more susceptible to recruitment just due to his precarious mental state. His father should be commended for turning him in. I can't imagine the agony a parent goes through in making a decision like that. But he made the right one of course.

Your post represents mainstream thought on the conflict between Islamism and America. I disagree.

You suggest that youth or mental illness is the likely reason someone would turn against America after becoming a citizen and being offered a lifestyle superior in every way to what they left behind.

The same assumption was made in the Soviet Union about any Russian who rejected the obvious benefits of the Communist system--one must be crazy to do that, so the insane asylum was often their new home.

The issue here is not mental health, but religious belief. I am not a member of any religion, but have a background that allows me to understand those with strong religious belief. It is difficult for those who have never come in contact with deep religious conviction to believe in its power to shape behavior.

In this case, Islamism is an aggressive version of Islam that promotes Sharia law for all, through violent and non-violent means.

Mohamud and bin Laden share the same ideology, tactics and goals. There is a very large movement in Islam, typified by the Muslim Brotherhood, the Organization of the Islamic Conference and Hizb ut Tahrir, that share the ideology and goals of Mohamud and bin Laden but with legal tactics.

These are the two faces of our enemy in this war.

Lot of talk here about fanatics and immigrants and what-not, but the core of the problem is something we as a country have failed to understand: simply by allowing public discourse on Muslims to take the negative, derogatory, suspicious course that is has, we have contributed to alienating and perhaps radicalizing these young people. The best way to send a teenager over the edge is to judge him unfairly and isolate him from his peers. This young man is 19; for the last ten years he has been hearing all this hateful talk we allow to go on about Muslims. We have undercut his faith, his family, and his personal identity. Try doing that to a Christian teenager and observe the same.

You are correct, of course. After reading the article, I also suspect some sort of mental illness...the ups and downs of mood, the swing between being a very serious person and a partier...all might indicate this. Add all the upheaval in his early life and you have the formula for a sick mind. That said, planning to blow up a huge gathering is serious crime.

Somali immigration to the US has been less than successful in many locations......that just may contribute to the negative image enjoyed by this particular group.

Didn't Mohamed Atta and the other supposed hijackers also visited strip-clubs and bars on the nights before September 11?... Am I seeing a pattern here?

Those who advocate profiling at airports really should be focusing on identifying "radical" Muslims who drink and party all night long!

Actually Ms Eagan, it was not your responsibility. It was a mission you took upon yourself, and as in many other locations, it has yielded less that laudatory results.

If you had any REAL responsibility you would now besetting about repairing the damage done by importing these folks.

We have an entire planet full of people who can be useful immigrants in the US. Poor research on our State Department's part and the help of numerous Christian aid groups in the US have imported a series of Somalis who are notable for their allegiance to destructive causes.

Aren't you the compassionate one? Let's hermetically seal the country and not let anyone in or out. What would investigating this kid at the age of 5, when he came to this country, yield? His father was an engineer, him mother an educated person, both were fleeing from a terrible situation. I fail to see how this young man's course of behavior would have been predictable. Therefore, your entire hypothesis is incorrect, as is blaming those who merely tried to assist people in a dire situation.

Somali immigrants, as a group, have been consistently involved in MANY terrorist acts and plots. It does not take a genius to conclude that the long line of Taiwanese, Nepalese, Indians, etc. would have been good substitutes.

The groups that enabled these folks to immigrate should be held responsible for their 'charges'...their fluffy headed mass importation has caused numerous issues that they just walk away from.
