Angelina Jolie Cleopatra

MTV:

James Cameron may no longer be attached to a new big-screen adaptation of Cleopatra's life, but "The Tourist" star Angelina Jolie is still considering tackling the tale of the complex Egyptian ruler. While there hasn't been much progress on the news front for that film, Jolie expressed her excitement about the idea of taking on the role once famously played by Elizabeth Taylor.

"I hope to one day [play her], but we don't have it all together," she told MTV News at the New York premiere of "The Tourist," where she was joined by her co-stars Johnny Depp and Paul Bettany, as well as her beau, Brad Pitt. "All the pieces are not together."

Hopefully cameron is not going to do this. It would be a great film and cameron would just ruin it.

Oh dear lord, I just hope she gets an accent coach. If she uses that same accent from Alexander there's no way I'll be able to sit through that entire movie.

Great choice, but no one will surpass Liz Taylor.

Liz was unbelievably beautiful in that role, but the movie stank.

I totally agree. She was absolutely regal looking. But the movie was way too long.

Liz was for her time and she was and still is just an unbelievable woman, Jolie is for now and she also is an unbelievable woman. Both women are strong, full of courage and live life to the fullest.

I'm sure that Angelina will give a great interpretation of the role.

However, there was an underlying buzz about the original since Liz was having a real affair with Burton at the time.

Also, you can't beat those azure eyes of hers.

For my money, Lyndsey Marshal from HBO's series "Rome" did a fantastic job. I don't think Jolie will do better.

... and I'd find someone like Rome's Indira Varma far more believable as Cleopatra than Jolie, but it's a Hollywood big-budget project if it happens so .... we won't worry about believable. Like the Taylor original, it will all be about how huge the production can be and how many sexy outfits Jolie can appear in.

If they're going to make a movie about Cleopatra I hope they seriously aren't considering Jolie and her laughable attempts at "accents". Every movie she does that calls for a foreign accent sounds like she's the bride of Dracula. Now if they want to put her in one of the Twilight movies, that would be ideal.

I'm not even sure she's doing a bride of Dracula accent. It's like she's from the country of nowhere when she opens her mouth.

Those who don't know film history are bound to repeat it. Call up Liz!

If Angelina is interested in delivering the true story of Cleopatra's life and death - kudos to her! If Hollywood is going to romanticize the story and re-shoot the film with Elizabeth Taylor and Burton - I will be disappointed. It is time for an updated movie version of Cleopatra's life, but I would prefer it be based on the fact Cleopatra did not commit suicide. She was murdered.

there is no definite proof that Cleopatra was murdered any more than there is definite proof that she killed herself. all we can say for sure is that she died after Octavian defeated Marc Antony.

It is going to be a serious film based on the new biography by Pulitzer Prize Winning biographer Stacy Shiff. Shiff did extensive research and debunked many of the myths about Cleopatra.

Westernization of movies, tv and literature just glamorize Cleopatra for the sake of her connection to Greece/Rome (in which I can't think of two more overrated, over-appreciated, over referenced and continuously "on display" periods in world history)

As a female leader/ruler Cleopatra was no Nefertiti, Ahmose-Nefertari or Queen Aqaluqa (of the 25th "Isis Dynasty") by a lightyear.

Exactly, and according to Egyptology, her beauty was very likely not as it is portrayed today. She was powerful, but not that beautiful.

Great - a film that Angelina can be 'not so pretty in' - but still show exquisite wisdom and strength! What a great idea!

"Cleopatra was black"

I used to believe that too, until I spent 3 hrs at the Nation Geographic exhibit and was force to realized her blood lineage in conjunction with the particular "dynasty" in which she ruled -may prove that , though a person of likely "olive skin color pigment" (Greek/Macedonian mix-mediterranean = not white/aryan) was not "african" in bloodline

Once the Alexander (the great bis exual destroyer and assimilator) plundered the region, all the stuarts and leaders he left to reign or control the many areas were mostly of Greek and/or Macedonian ancestry ....which would put Cleo smack dab in the middle of the very last (33rd) dynasty for that region.

What I say is, SO WHAT?...There were all sorts of Nubian rulers of that region male and female that NEVER get mentioned (let alone a "movie") -it's just how "westernization" has made everything we see.

Look, we all read Ebony and Essence growing up and we told this little falsehood but Cleopatra was actually of Greek descent. And if we want people of other ethnic groups to celebrate our beauty we should celebrate theirs - pasty is not a nice thing to say and Jolie is very pretty.

getting off of the soapbox.

There were 33 dynasties that ruled over that region and yet hollywood ONLY chooses to focus on the shortest and very last one which was that of the greeks.....no need to wonder why.

(Nubia was the real "blood" of Kemmut -later named "Egypt" by the invading greeks)
