Elizabeth Edwards Dead

Elizabeth Edwards, the estranged wife of former Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards, has died, according to WRAL. She was 61.

The AP reports:

WASHINGTON -- Elizabeth Edwards, who closely advised her husband in two bids for the presidency and advocated for health care even as her marriage publicly crumbled, died Tuesday after a six-year struggle with cancer. She was 61.

She died at her North Carolina home surrounded by her three children, siblings, friends and her estranged husband, John, the family said.

"Today we have lost the comfort of Elizabeth's presence but, she remains the heart of this family," the family said in a statement. "We love her and will never know anyone more inspiring or full of life. On behalf of Elizabeth we want to express our gratitude to the thousands of kindred spirits who moved and inspired her along the way. Your support and prayers touched our entire family."

She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, in the final days of her husband's vice presidential campaign. The Democratic John Kerry-John Edwards ticket lost to incumbent President George W. Bush.

John Edwards launched a second bid for the White House in 2007, and the Edwardses decided to continue even after doctors told Elizabeth that her cancer had spread. He lost the nomination to Barack Obama.

The couple separated in January after he admitted fathering a child with a campaign videographer.

Elizabeth Edwards had focused in recent years on advocating health care reform, often wondering aloud about the plight of those who faced the same of kind of physical struggles she has, but without her personal wealth.

She has also shared with the public the most intimate struggles of her bouts with cancer, writing and speaking about the pain of losing her hair, the efforts to assure her children about their mother's future and the questions that lingered about how many days she had left to live. [Story continues below.]

Elizabeth Edwards and her family had informed the public that she had weeks, if not days, left when they announced on Monday that doctors had told her that further treatment will do no good. Ever the public figure, Edwards thanked supporters on her Facebook page.

"The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered," she wrote. "We know that. And yes, there are certainly times when we aren't able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It's called being human. But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful."

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, one of John Edwards' rivals for the Democratic nomination in 2008, said the country "has lost a passionate advocate for building a more humane and just society," while the Edwardses' family and friends "have lost so much more - a loving mother, constant guardian and wise counselor."

"Our thoughts are with the Edwards family at this time, and with all those people across the country who met Elizabeth over the years and found an instant friend - someone who shared their experiences and offered empathy, understanding and hope," Clinton said in a statement.

Vice President Joe Biden said Edwards "fought a brave battle against a terrible, ravaging disease that takes too many lives every day. She was an inspiration to all who knew her, and to those who felt they knew her."

Kerry called her "an incredibly loving, giving and devoted mother" who fought cancer with "enormous grace and dignity."

The Edwardses met in law school. Daughter Cate has followed her parents into a career in law. A son, Wade, was killed in a traffic accident when he was 16. Elizabeth Edwards had two more children later, giving birth to Emma Claire when she was 48 and Jack when she was 50.

The family asked that donations be made to the Wade Edwards Foundation, which benefits the Wade Edwards Learning Lab. He was the Edwards' teenaged son who died in a car accident.

Jake Tapper reports that President Obama "called John Edwards and his daughter Cate this afternoon after Elizabeth Edwards had passed away."

On Monday, it was reported that cancer had spread to Edwards's liver. On the same day she wrote a Facebook note to friends and family:

You all know that I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces -- my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope. These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined. The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that. And yes, there are certainly times when we aren't able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It's called being human. But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful. It isn't possible to put into words the love and gratitude I feel towards everyone who has and continues to support and inspire me every day. To you I simply say: you know.

You left us way too soon; what a lovely, caring and courage's woman you were, There will never be another woman like you, and we will remember how you cared for us as long as we are alive.

Peace to her.

I have a question: did she actually "give birth" to her kids at age 48 and 50, or were those the fruit of some form of reproductive technology? Does anyone know this detail?

Very sad news about Elizabeth Edwards. But saying "she lost her battle with cancer" is misplaced. She lived with cancer. She raised her children, she played a major role in national campaigns for the Presidency, for health care, she wrote books, she spoke out eloquently on many important issues of our time all while living with cancer. You don't "battle" cancer and you don't "lose" when its over.

Rest In Peace Elizabeth Edwards!

I am wondering why women like Elizabeth Edwards, Linda McCartney, and Lynn Redgrave
who obviously have access to great heath care do not have regular Mammograms?
All three of these wonderful women might be alive today if they had made an appointment for
a mammogram and pap smear each year.
I had regular mammograms and pap smears every year and good that I did as at age
58 I began to find small tumors in my breasts! One tumor (benign) first (had lumpectomy) on left breast and the following few months another small tumor that was malignant cancer on my right breast!
Had I not gone for a yearly check up I might not have caught the cancerous tumor until I found a lump..
Just because you don't know if you have cancer doesn't mean you don't have it.
Please get a check up yearly if you are 40 or 50 years of age.
Better to be safe than sorry! I had a mastectomy on my right breast (the surgery wasn't painful)
and today I don't even realize I lost a breast. I feel great!
Don't be afraid as at least if your doctor finds cancer don't mean it will beat you.
You have a better chance if you find cancer early!

I told my dear friend Camille when I heard about this on Tuesday it was like I had the breath knocked out of me. She agreed and said she is not sure why but this loss has had a huge effect on us all, it seems. I didn't know Mrs. Edwards except for the public personna we all have seen. I have seen my share of death over the years and this is not a particularly exceptional one but for one thing: Mrs. Edwards was a lady. She loved her family with passion. She suffered over her loss of Wade. She bore her broken heart because of the Senator. She worked to make our lives better. She was a model for you young folks coming along now who need to know you can make a difference. The difference you might make may be small but without small things there are no big deals.

We have lost another treasure this week. One that carried herself with sublime grace.

To the rest of the Edwards family: we can never know the intimacy of your grief but we can keep you in our hearts as you carry out your days without your dear Elizabeth.
