Darren Pang Gaffe: P.K. Subban Should Do Things The 'White Way' (VIDEO)

First Posted: 12/08/10 12:35 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

NHL analyst Darren Pang made a verbal gaffe Tuesday night while discussing Montreal defenseman rookie P.K. Subban, who is black, and St. Louis' Alex Pietrangelo, who is white.

Pang described Subban as "full of life" and said that "the more gregarious he got, the more full of life he got, the more everybody wants to settle him down." He then suggested Subban look to Pietrangelo as an example of someone who Subban should "maybe try to duplicate."

Pang said Pietrangelo "does everything, on the ice, off the ice, the white way."

He immediately corrected himself and said "the right way."

Later, Pang said he felt terrible about the mistake.

"I feel terrible, I've got a knot in my stomach," he said. "It was an honest mistake, and I mixed up my words, obviously."

Did he say ovechkin needs to settle down and play the white way? Older Players chirp about him learning his place because they don't like getting hit by a newcomer. Pang hears it from them and passes it along to us. Screw him. Pangs a cool guy!? Because he's on tv? Because he's bald!? Who else in the league should be playing the "white way"(sic) on and off the ice? Ovechkin? Slip of the tongue indeed. Slip and fall.

He apologize and Subban accept his apologies so what? French-canadians players heard thing way more racist than this, believe me. And no one apologize

@dandmb50 - If Don Cherry had of said it, there would clearly been much more of an uproar. But then Cherry is always saying "look he doesn't even have a visor on" which kind of indicates he thinks if you wear a "visor" you are somehow a suck. I think it's a great idea to wear one, it helps you from losing an EYE, not a bad idea.
But the "white way" comment was wrong and no matter how you slice it, he should be gone.

So let's assume for arguments sakethat he meant to say "white way." can the race-baters out there tell me what a white-way is either on or off the ice? Conversely, tell us what the black way would be. Ridiculous.

do you think he'll continue to call himself a color analyist?

I know this would go against everything that they believe in but I dare the editors of the HP sports page to write a Hockey story that is actually positive.

He slipped up, then immediately corrected himself, so why is this a big deal?

From my rough math and wikipedia's list, it appears that black players make up over 3% of the league.

From the same style of math and wikipedia, that's roughly the same percentage of black people in the Canadian population.
Coincidence, or further proof of Canada's hockey superiority?

nope watch the clip (please don't just read the headline watch the actual clip to get the context), he is talking about him as a cocky rookie, and compared him to another cocky young player who learned his place and keeps out of the spotlight, He then slips on a word. You cannot watch that clip and honestly think there was any racial motivation behind this slip of the tongue.

this was not worthy of an apology....it was clearly an honest mistake, and it being news is what fuels the right wing "PC is wrong" crowd!!!

He insulted an entire group of people.
Whether it was intentional, accidental or a fraudian slip, it deserved an apology.
As far as what is and isn't "news", look around, the majority of "news" stories are more about entertainment then ctully spreading important information.
This guy made a mistake, and I'm fine believing it was accidental, and he apologized for the mistake.
And when it comes to the "PC is wrong crowd", their just mad that they can't be racist in public anymore. So I really don't care what fuels them up.
