Joan Mitchell's Abstract Expressionist Paintings: An Exploration of Emotions Through Painting

EXHIBITION SPOTLIGHT: Joan Mitchell's Abstract Expressionist Paintings

WHO: Joan Mitchell

WHAT: The Last Decade

WHEN: November 13th until December 21st 2010

WHERE: GAGOSIAN GALLERY
456 North Camden Drive,
Beverly Hills, CA 90210

WHY: Known as one of the few female artists in the second generation of American Abstract Expressionists, Joan Mitchell's paintings evoke an emotionality that becomes evident in her brushstrokes and palette. While many of her titles suggest natural imagery- tree's, rivers, sunflowers- her technique alludes to a mental space beyond the pictorial.

Gagosian Gallery presents "The Last Decade," an exhibition of 14 paintings by Joan Mitchell, produced during the last 10 years of her life. Many of the later works reflect the circumstances of Mitchell's own life. From the death of her friends to struggles with her own life, painting became an extension of her experiences, as well as a temporary respite from them.
