Stewart: Obama's Tax Cut Deal Like Losing Weight With Bacon (VIDEO)

First Posted: 12/08/10 09:25 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

After much bickering back and forth over the Bush era tax cuts set to expire at the end of this year, President Obama announced this week that a deal had been made between the Democrats and Republicans in Congress. On Tuesday night's "Daily Show," Jon Stewart, " like the House Democrats, had a lot to say about Obama's compromise and what it means for the future.

Stewart has been talking for weeks about the GOP holding out on Democratic initiatives until they agree to extend tax cuts for those making over $250,000 a year. Now that a compromise has been made, he wondered which side had really won? Would there be lower taxes and less spending, or higher taxes and more spending?

When Obama announced that the tax cuts would be extended for everyone including those making over $250,000 AND that unemployment insurance would be extended for 13 months, Stewart was baffled. He even compared the compromise to the worst diet plan ever:

"And the winner is: lower taxes and more spending? That wasn't an option!" Stewart said. "That's like saying 'Hey, you know how we're all going to get in shape after New Year's? Laziness and bacon."

For more, Stewart turned to John Oliver, who had an oddly sexual metaphor for the how the tax cuts would affect the country. Let's just say he makes trickle down economics sound way dirtier than it already does.

Jon is funny and informative but this bit was off on so many levels.

1. The analogy with bacon doesn't work. If you just ate bacon, you would lose weight.
2. This deal was not about lowering the deficit, it was about stimulating the economy to create jobs.

Our economy is too weak. It has too little demand within it to sustain tackling the deficit and the debt in a serious way -- courtesy of Republican rule.

The tax cuts, more so, the reduction in payroll deductions will stimulate the economy in a big way. Also, the middle class is getting the lion share of the break. Obama is about the middle class.

So, Jon can't be "On" all the time and this time he was "off."

Obama is a failure with a long list of big accomplishments already. many of us are angry because he will not fight an "all or not a GD thing" battle because it would end up being "not a GD thing." he'd rather come away with SOMETHING that we can work with. The Republicans won with being in full opposition to everything, what makes anyone think this is where they will change their winning game plan?

Er, you DO lose weight by eating bacon! If everyone started eating egg and bacon for breakfast instead of white bread with marmalade, much of the obesity problem would disappear.

Jon Stewart, the person liberals love to love when he says what they want to hear, and hate to hate when he says what they don't.

Oh, so the king of caving to the middle, critiques someone who is caving to the middle.

John Stewart is as political as any member of Congress.

bush has been gone for 2 years now and what has improved? How can we possibly borrow money from China to pay for tax break extensions for the wealthiest people in America? And cutting contributions to FICA will be a springboard for the Reps to announce, sorry, Social Security is underfunded. At this point in my life, I have lost my job, lost my healthcare, and may lose social security. How can we possibly continue like this?

absolutely spot on, catbite. and then, when they announce that social security is underfunded because of cutting contributions to fica; then they'll turn social security over to wall street to 'save' it. which will, of course, end it.

we can't continue like this. there's a storm coming.
