Christmas Gifts 2010: 7 REAL Gift Ideas Straight From The Movies (PICTURES)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 12/09/10 08:48 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

It's often hard to find that exact right gift for a loved one, so why not turn to popular entertainment and take cues from fictional characters? There's plenty to love about holiday classics -- uplifting messages, colorful elves and animals, a chance to look at the TV screen without some self-serious pundit bloviating about a fake War on Christmas. But we've found that many of them can teach us gift-giving lessons in both positive and negative ways. Here are some famous presents exchanged in some beloved, and not-so-beloved, Christmas movies, and places you can order them. Vote for your favorite!

"A Christmas Story" - Leg Lamp

Another one of the most famous gifts in movie history was also from "A Christmas Story," this one to Ralphie's father as an award for a local bowling contest. Replicas can be found here.

I didn't know the leg lamp from "A Christmas Story" was a bowling trophy! Makes sense. Turboman is a real toy?! Get out!

I am happy to see A Christmas Story had two gifts in the mix. We actually watch that movie every Christmas Day after everyone leaves.

So far, we have never had to have Chinese food on Christmas. But there is always a first for everything.

way to make stuff up HuffPo...the leg lamp was an award for knowing the Lone Ranger's nephew's horse's name (Victor) not for a "bowling" contest

No, the old man asked that question at the dinner table while working on a "great names in literature crossword."

It was definitely for a crossword puzzle. No bowling.

Confession: Used to have a stocking lamp and wish I still had it. My son now has possession of the Red Ryder., But nobody can take my Wienermobile whistle away from me.

My grandma had several Oscar Meyer Wiener whistles, and Dairy Queen ice cream cone whistles, and real marbles. We loved playing with those things when we went to visit. I don't know what ever happened to them.

"A Christmas Story" director Bob Clark also used the leg lamp in "Porky's 2".

As for completely fictional gifts that are best left fictional, Mogwai probably tops the list, just since he'll turn into a gremlin if he eats after midnight (when can he start eating again?).

Speaking of furry little animal things. My daughter got a Furbie for Christmas one year. Annoying as all get out. One night, the thing short circuited or something. I threw it down in the basement and went back to bed. I could still hear it. I hated that thing. She didn't pay much attention to it, so when I couldn't turn it off or get the thing open to rip out the batteries, I had to beat the thing apart with my son's baseball bat until it came apart and I could pull out the batteries. 2am and I had to beat a Furbie to oblivion to make it stop. I think it had a Gremlin if you know what I mean!
