"Is HP shilling for the vanity press industry?"

I don't think so. A "vanity press" is one which, as the name implies, takes advantage of the vanity of an author who has more money than sense. It takes that money up front, along with your text, and in return gives you a stack of books to distribute to family and close friends. If you're lucky you might actually sell one or two of those books, but the odds are that most of them will be given away or will languish in a box in the attic.

SmashWords looks like it's almost the exact polar opposite of a vanity press. There are no up-front fees. They'll take a small commission on your sales, but most of the proceeds will go to you as author and if you don't sell anything then you don't pay anything. Your work will be reformatted for various handheld devices, and you pay nothing for that service. Your books can be noticed and bought by anyone anywhere in the world, as long as they have an internet connection. Anyone can download a sample for free, introducing them to your ideas and to you as an author. That has to be an improvement on books that you paid a lot of money for going on to gather dust in your attic,
