Brilliance Of The Seas, Royal Caribbean Ship, Tossed About In Mediterranean (VIDEO)

First Posted: 12/13/10 10:06 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Barely a week after video of a cruise ship getting tossed about by waves in the Arctic hit the web, another cruise ship found itself in a similar situation in the Mediterranean, according to CBS News.

The 2,100-passenger Brilliance of the Seas was making its way to Alexandria, Egypt when large waves and heavy winds sent the boat rocking, according to USA Today.

An American passenger told CBS' "The Early Show" that it was a "horrifying" experience and that water had crashed through the ship's 10th floor windows, sogging passenger quarters.

Connecticut resident Justine Lovelace told her local news that: "It was a little scary on Saturday because the boat was rocking down and rocking back up, but you never knew how deep it was going to go. And then that Saturday night is when the boat almost went on its side."

Passengers awoke in the morning to find debris everywhere and the ship's 20-foot Christmas tree on its side.

Nature is NOT the fault of the ship...so it shocks me at people being upset at a 400 ship credit. When you travel, you pay for insurance to handle catastrophe's and this should be one of them but don't blame the ship UNLESS they had fair warning that bad weather was iminent and they continued to go into the rough seas, unless they were negligent with safety, I don't think people should be mad at the cruise line or its employees.

Don't be afraid. Be prepared to make your own decisions by reading Cruise Control: Your Peace of Mind at Sea.

I love rough seas. I truly do.

What they were feeling is probably comparable to this video of a boat in rough sea in the Med too.

I went to the port of Alexandria on the Costa Magica and I have to say that will be my last major cruise, but then again I'm totally a wimp.

THAT is NOT a ship. It's a cheap barge with a hotel built on top.

Breathe catching recording, indeed!

I'll skip crusie ships this lifetime and stick to ocean loners. I highly recomend the Q.E. II, she has a larger draft.

A lot of these ships dump their toilet mess right into the waters...maybe Aquaman and friends got tired of it and decided to get some revenge......

It is so annoying to have to watch commercials, sometimes long ones, just to watch a short video.

A short video with a banner ad covering 20% of it. A banner ad that, if you close it, just opens to ANOTHER banner ad. It's frustrating. You can't even watch the video!?!

Putting a 10 story Holiday Inn on a raft does not make for a stable ship.  Just waiting for one of these big boys to reenact The Poseiden Adventure.  It will happen.

I wrote about as much above. She only has a 24 foot draft under that Holiday Inn.

I prefer older ships, much older, with large drafts.

"Protests on board"? What are you going to protest, that the cruise company didn't send a message to Poseidon for smooth seas? Sorry folks, but weather at sea can be very unpredictable and cruise ships are more designed for smooth seas, not heavy waves. Might want to keep that in mind when you sign up for a cruise. Otherwise, sign up for a cruise that doesn't leave the pier.

We once had to leave our anchor behind IN PORT after it had become tangled with the boat next to us. We were cruising the Adriatic and the storm was so fierce the boat had to be taken out to sea to ride it out or it would have been smashed to bits. These waters are fairly sheltered but the Captain explained it was a Mistral and two sailors on other boats died out there that evening.

The headline on AOL, "30 Hurt as Storm Buffets Cruise Ship"

Couldn't help but imagining the headline:

That could be the problem. It wasn't waves so much as it was two serving lines to port and starboard. When one side or the other was refreshed, the passengers would all quickly switch sides to take advantage of the feast.

What they don't say about this story is that it was a cruise targeted to the morbidly obese. That's a LOT of weight to be shifting so suddenly.

I keep having a visual of the skipper hitting Gilligan over the head with his hat. This comment would like have resulted in just such a thing I believe. :P

It is important to note the distinction between "cruise ships" and "ocean liners" such as the QM2. Cruise ships are not designed to deal with extremely high seas such as are common in the North Atlantic. Ships like the QM2 were specifically designed cut right through very heavy seas.

Which s why I only cross in jets and on the Q.E. II.

Larger draft, sleeker lines, more power.
09:30 AM on 12/14/2010
Isn't the Q.E. II retired? Ohhhh, yes she is. That would make you ill informed, incorrect, incoherent snide little person who should get their facts correct and study more instead of constantly baggerring people about the tiniest things - which is all you seem to do. (And which is why you got my reply here - because all you do is harass.) Can't you come up with ANY ideas?

Maybe you need to get out more often.

I cannot but help wonder why the number of Americans onboard makes the slightest bit of difference to the situation.

On another subject, anyone who takes a cruise is taking a chance on rough weather. It's a ship at see folks. I was, for a time, the manager of a fairly large shipyard. I would never go on a cruise. Once you get down into the depths of the ship that the passengers never see it can be scary. (I once kicked a hole in a watertight bulkhead with little effort) Especially those flaged in countrys of convenience, rather than ships flagged where the rules are strict. I also remember the Greek ship in trouble off S. Africa several years ago, when the Captain and executive oficers left the ship and passenges on their own. A R&R band was the heroes who helped the passengers, not the crew.
