21 Hotels That Are National Historic Landmarks (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 12/14/10 03:37 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

It's an incredible experience to stay in an historic location; quite another to stay in an historic hotel.

There are many historic hotels around the United States, but 21 are designated national historic landmarks. While one hotel on this list has been converted into a museum, you can still stay where the World Bank was created or the Miami home-away-from-home of the world's political and entertainment heavyweights.

Check out these 21 beautiful hotels, each teaming with class and history.

Stayed at a hotel that should be a national historic landmark? Send us your photos!

FYI-you have to pay to enter the lobby of the Mackinac Island Grand Hotel unless you are a guest there.

Well, just as soon as I find a decent job, I'll eventually certainly consider staying at each and every one of them...

How about the Palace in San Francisco where Caruso was staying when the earthquake destroyed the City and where later President Harding died?  It is still among San Francisco's best.

Not a single Boston hotel? How about the Parker House to start--as in Parker House rolls. The longest continuously operating hotel in the country. Where Boston Cream Pie was invented and Ho Chi Minh worked as a baker and Malcolm X as a bus boy. Located across the street from both King's Chapel and the Granary burying grounds and a couple of blocks from Faneuil Hall and the old State House, and the site of the Boston Massacre. Among notable guest--Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Longfellow, Sarah Bernhardt, Mary Todd Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth (8 days before he assassinated Lincoln), Judy Garland, Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Judy Garland, and every US president from US Grant to Bill Clinton.

Yeah, these are all great until you are MURDERED.

Or the naked chick in your tub turns into a rotting corpse. THEN YOU ARE MURDERED.

Seriously, the horror industry has killed any chance of me getting a good night sleep in a hotel/motel.

The Greenbriar in Sulphur Springs, WV is or was the relocation bunker for the government should they have to be evacuated from Washington, DC. There are dormitories, offices, conference rooms. I saw a documentary about it several years ago. The outside blast doors are several feet thick but balanced so finely to allow them to be closed easily. The bunker was being maintained and kept at the ready all the while the guests of the Greenbriar had no idea what was below them.

It was decommissioned quite a while ago, since it was never really much of a secret. You can take tours of the bunker now.
