Brian Christopher, Homeless Vet, Spurs Community To Donate After Returning Lost Wallet

First Posted: 12/16/10 03:15 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

When homeless veteran Brian Christopher stumbled upon a lost wallet full of cash, he took it to the police station so the money could be returned to its rightful owner.

Christopher realized he could have used the $172 to buy Christmas presents for his three children, but decided to do the right thing instead.

After his story ran on local news station FOX 25 and in The Boston Globe, dozens of community members came forward to help Christopher and the organization that's housing him.

The New England Center for Homeless Veterans -- and Boston Globe staffers -- have been flooded with calls and e-mails pledging donations to Christopher and the shelter itself.

The Globe reports,

Christopher said he was overwhelmed by the reaction to what he thought was a simple good deed not worthy of attention.

US Veterans Face Higher Rate of Homelessness
Thousands of American veterans have returned from dangerous tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan only to end up homeless. Veterans advocacy organizations say many of them end up on the streets or in shelters just months after leaving active duty. http://www.newslook.com/videos/268423-us-veterans-face-higher-rate-of-homelessness?autoplay=true

He's a veteran, why is he homeless in the first place? This is tragic. God bless him, he is a hones and good man.

There goes the myth that poor people are lazy, live off the land people. This is a good honest human being who has nothing.

He has an amazing character. I can't say if I was in his shoes that I would have done the same thing. I would've thought about my kids, Xmas, all of that.

But because he's honest he will receive even more blessings, which is the best part of the story.

If this isn't an example of why doing the right thing pays off I dunno what is.

25% of America's homeless population are Veteran's. A scary statistic. Veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars transition the homelessness faster than any other wars. This is a sad fact and we have let our Veterans down. I had an opportunity to speak to VP Biden (then candidate Biden) about this. I was surprised by the passion of his response.... but since then I know why this administration and the FLOTUS and SLOTUS have worked so hard for our Veterans. There is much more to be done. We send them off to war, we should at least take care of when they come home.

Have you seen how Canada receives their fallen home? We should do that.

I am the designer of the Comic Book Wallet that Brian found.
We were so inspired by Brian’s story at Mighty Wallets®, that I called Brian yesterday with an offer to collaborate with him to create a Mighty Wallet® of his original artwork. The goal was to give a bigger audience to his creative talents and give him an opportunity for a long term financial gain. All the proceeds of the sales of Brian’s Mighty Wallet® would go to Brian Christopher and the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans.

Mighty Wallets® is about personal expression and creative empowerment and we would be honored to create a platform for Brian’s artwork to give him recognition for his artistic ability and for his honorable action, both in his service to our country and his selfless act that has touched so many people.

Be Mighty this Holiday!

A "homeless vet". It sounds like a Corporate Republican invention. Serve (Corporate) American interest, risk life and health. When you survive, the money to support you has gone, to.........the Rich owners of, Corporate America. Must be real poor to sign for the army

I just goes to show you how one relatively small, anonymous act can have a positive influence on the world.
