guardian.co.uk:

Sedaris says he left a tip jar on his signing table at a book tour and made a grand total of $4,000. At the end of his "best evening", in Dallas, he said, he made $530. I think it's actually a good idea for most writers to have a tip jar when they do book signings. It's not as if book signings weren't costing them money in travel, time and expenses.

My therapist used to have a tip jar, however, he was treating me for kleptomania.

Make me cringe? Nope, makes me laugh. I love you, David. And had I known it was for Candy, I would have tipped you with Tic Tacs.

The part about him, against logic, resenting the people who didn't tip is just a perfect glimpse into human nature.

Not to be a Liberal cliche, but I wish that the "punchline" to Sedaris' "joke" was that the money was going to charity...

I tip for art. This is no exception. This man brings me belly laughs. I can hear his elf as I write - Billy Holiday is singing Silent Night - I add to the jar of gratitude for you, sir!
