Gap's FEED USA Bags Made In China

First Posted: 12/16/10 11:42 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Update: Gap spokesperson Renate Geerlings emailed Styleite and confirmed that some of the FEED USA bags were, in fact, made in China:

There are several bags in the FEED USA collection. The FEED USA Canvas Tote bag and the limited edition one-of-a-kind Bandana Bag are both made in the USA.

However, the FEED USA Denim Bucket bags are made in China, and should not have been connected to the made in the USA signs.

We apologize for any inaccurate messaging.

Previously: From the folks at Brandchannel comes a rather interesting scoop: Gap's FEED USA bags might be made in China.

The line of totes and lunchbags are decked out with stars, stripes and maps of America on the outside --and for every bag sold, Gap donates $5 to improve school food and nutrition in the good ol' USA -- but on the inside, sewn into each sack is a tag that clearly reads "Made in China." And on all of the brand's advertisements and on its website, Gap boasts that the items were made in the US of A.

Now maybe just the tag was manufactured overseas, not the rest of the bag. Either way, it's kind of a big oversight.

Check out this image of the totes in question from Brandchannel or click through to an even clearer picture of the tags.

What do you think?

Quick Poll

Would you buy a FEED USA bag if it were made in China?

YES! It's for a good cause and practically everything is made in China nowadays.

NO! Doesn't that defeat the purpose?

Surely this is silly to make the claim and have it be wrong, but the idea that the bags HAVE to be made in the USA for the charity to be legit is even sillier. And the poll above? Seriously? Why does it "defeat the purpose"? The purpose isn't to support American companies who make cloth bags. It's to sell those bags, using celebrity and GAP's presence, to raise money for hungry US kids. P.S. once again Huffington Post has no "byline" on an article, so conveniently there's no author to poke and say "come on, pay attention when you write your polls." You guys need to put bylines on this stuff - basic journalism.

If people want to support US children they should just donate to schools directly. Don't bother giving GAP a cut. And if you want a cool bag, I suggest checking out Etsy.

There is nothing wrong with Made in China, which enabled MORE money to be spent on actually feeding the hungry children.

the tag likely sewn in during the manufacturing so would seem to have been 'made in China', unless no one in the entire line of the making of the product had the power to speak up about the detail or spoke the language
