#BookstoreBingo: 9 Crazy Things Said In Bookstores (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 12/17/10 08:59 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Bookstores have been on our minds lately. First, we mourned the death of bookshops this decade. Then, we celebrated the living. Finally, we rejoiced in our readers' favorite stores.

One of the reasons we love bookstores so much is because of all the hilarious things said inside of them. For instance, someone apparently asked what other books Anne Frank wrote. Yes, that was said.

We've featured #BookstoreBingo roundups before and we'll feature them again. Here's 9 more ridiculous things heard in bookstores. Let us know what else you've overheard.

My micro-bio is empty. Should I be concerned?

Occasionally these are funny - I was a bookseller for nearly seven years, and heard many strange things - but the comment from the Beck customer is really more disturbing than funny. It's a sad sign of how Beck's particular brand of conspiracy-paranoia can infect the uninformed and unthinking. I can guarantee this customer that any "socialist bookstore" would not carry Beck, and that most bookstores are (through no fault of their own) solidly capitalist. They sell what sells, even if that unfortunately means there are a lot more copies of Beck's books on hand than, say, Naomi Klein's. (Though Klein does pretty well too.)

Once at Borders, a customer had asked for a book by Beck or O'Reilly or Savage (or someone else), and said something like "you got all these books by Michael Moore, but you try to keep Beck's well hidden, right?" - clearly oblivious to the large table displaying the very same book he was looking for, located conspicuously at the front of the store. (As I said, they sell what sells.) This customer was so conditioned to think that his favorite author was being "repressed" by the "liberal media" that he was blind to the overwhelming exposure. When the front table was pointed out to him, he just mumbled something about "well, it's still not enough...".

There are two I have no problem with, first "Don't you have any teen books that aren't about girls and boys" One it was probably a teen asking, and secondly, they may have wanted a book aimed at teens that involve adults, rather than teens (Twilight, Harry Potter ect).

And the "Do you have that Keith Richardson book?" Well Keith Richardson is an author (probably not what they meant, but possible). http://www.amazon.com/Keith-Richardson/e/B001JS6XXU/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_pop_1

“Don't you have any teen books that aren't about girls and boys?” Perhaps a more reasonable question would have been: “Don't you have any teen books that aren't about vampires?” Just saying.

I'm curious myself though. What is a “socialist” bookstore? One where everyone pays the same entry fee, but than gets to take as many books as they need for free? Sounds something like a public library, which probably explains Glen Becks disapproval.

Maybe a "socialist bookstore" is anything that isn't a conservative think tank that buys thousands of copies to inflate his "bestseller" status?

beck's 15 minutes have been up for 20 min, it is time for him to retire (a very rich man) and get a new set of underwear.

Socialist bookstores are called libraries.

If Anne Frank was such a great writer, how come she only wrote one book?
10:55 PM on 12/19/2010
Such poor taste.  Blecchhh.
05:20 AM on 12/19/2010
The "Les Miserables" one and the Shakespeare/Dickens one made me want to bang my head on my keyboard. Jeez, this country has dumbed down much farther than I knew.
11:36 AM on 12/19/2010
"Further." Sorry. I had to.
04:31 AM on 12/19/2010
Whoever thinks that's a stupid question should look in the mirror for true stupidity.

If someone asks about other books by Anne Frank, there are AT LEAST two.

First, there's the unabridged version of her diary, which is not the one most people read (it was only published within the last 15 years or so).

Second, there's a collection of stories she wrote, published under the title Tales from the Secret Annex.

People, please stop hiding or moving books you don't like or agree with. The only people who notice are staff and then we have to fix it. It is not cute, funny, or witty
11:54 PM on 12/18/2010
I thought people did that to save it for themselves, until they could come back to the store with more money.
11:32 AM on 12/19/2010
Okay, I admit it: I always move the $cientology books to "True Crime". That's because my local bookstore always puts the books under "bestselling fantasy", "bestselling detective", and "bestselling self-improvement".

I worked in a bookstore that was located inside a mall one of the worst comments overheard, mother & teen daughter walk into the store talking. They stop about ten feet in and the mother looks at the daughter and says, "Wait, this is a bookstore what are we doing here? We don't read!" We all stood there in shock and disgust as they backed out of the story as if we were going to corrupt them with knowledge.

well, obviously, you were. can't have that, now, can we ?

"we don't read" . . . . .how sad is that?
04:16 PM on 12/19/2010
I would have laughed at them.
12:49 PM on 12/18/2010
Overheard in bookstore: "No wonder this industry is going out of business."
09:54 AM on 12/18/2010
The worst question anyone can ask is "Where is your non-fiction section".
11:05 AM on 12/20/2010
I thought the worst question was "where do you keep your fictional novels?"
07:23 PM on 12/20/2010
I don't think that is a problem. If the person that has most of their book experience in the library, may not realize that a bookstore is set up differently. To be honest, if book stores were set up like the library it may be so much easier some times. I have seen authors like Jeffrey Deaver in general literature section of one store, in mystery in another and thriller in another. If all fiction was together and alphabetical it would be much easier.

Could anyone tell me which book stores are considered socialist by Glenn Beck? I will be sure to give those stores my business.

Well I don't know all of them but here is one I'm sure would qualify and is one of my favorites: Bound Together Anarchist Collective Bookstore near Haight Ashbury in San Francisco. Great collection of socialist and beyond books and also a very interesting atmosphere:

Glen Beck. Does he support book burnings?

i'm sure he would like to burn, or have burned, any number of books: michael moore's, greg palast's, alicia morgan's, naomi klein's . . . . .

I shore would love an autographed copy of "My Pet Goat". Bet Beck has a few of those stockpiled.

I've been a bookseller for 20-odd years, and believe me, these are average. I heard utterly ridiculous stuff said by perfectly normal looking people, who looked reasonably intelligent.
But then again, we live in a society that read like lemmings whenever Oprah issues her orders.

Agreed;)

I didn't know book sellers felt such disdain for their customers. You've just made me feel better about buying my books from Amazon.com.

Thanks for relieving me of my holiday guilt. :-)
01:26 AM on 12/19/2010
Not disdain, more often complete astonishment and exasperation, or sometimes amazement at what falls out of people's mouths.
On the other hand, you've never worked retail, have you? The abuse most clerks take any given day is amazing, and I'm always surprised you don't hear about violence in malls during the Xmas season.
