As we we reach the end of the year, you'll no doubt be inundated with "best of 2010" lists on every topic imaginable. But we also want to look ahead to 2011--to the creative minds we're expecting great things from. These people have wowed us in many ways, but are nowhere near done.
Blake Mycoskie is the Founder and Chief Shoe Giver of TOMS Shoes. While on vacation in Argentina in 2006, Mycoskie noticed the many children without shoes and saw the hardship that inflicted. They were not allowed in school and they were at risk for life-threatening soil-transmitted diseases. He decided to start a shoe company that would donate a pair to a child for each one bought by a customer. As of this April, his company has given away more than 1,000,000 pairs of new shoes.
Not only does TOMS Shoes avidly promote its "One for One" program, but it also requires its factories in developing nations to pay fair wages and adhere to sound working conditions. The latter is ensured with routine visits from TOMS Shoes employees and outside auditors.
