Obama Reads His Children's Book To 2nd Graders

ARLINGTON, Va. — Usually, big-name authors plug their books on a nationwide book tour. President Barack Obama took a lower-key approach Friday, reading selections from his new children's book to a group of delighted second-graders in suburban Virginia.

In the library of Long Branch Elementary School, some four dozen youngsters giggled and squirmed as Obama gave voice to passages from "Of Thee I Sing," an illustrated volume in the form of a letter to his daughters describing the lives of 13 great Americans. It was written in 2008 but just came out this fall, with proceeds going to a scholarship fund for the children of fallen and disabled soldiers.

"I wanted to borrow you guys, and read to you," Obama explained, sitting down on a wooden chair as the children sat cross-legged on the carpet.

He began with entries on Albert Einstein – "he was one of the smartest men ever" – and Jackie Robinson – "he was the first African-American to play in major league baseball" – before skipping to the end, and the entry on Abraham Lincoln.

"Everybody know who Abraham Lincoln is?" Obama asked, to a chorus of "Yes!" from the youngsters. "He helped to end slavery in the United States."

Obama left behind a signed copy for the school library. "You can read about all these other different people who are brave and imaginative and creative and smart, just like you guys are," he said. "I hope you enjoy it."

Obama also read the Chrismas poem "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" by Clement Moore, pausing so the kids could jump in at key points and making side comments on things like the couple of inches of snow Washington was dusted with Thursday. "I'm surprised you guys are in school 'cause a lot of times in Washington people don't go to school when there's even an inch of snow," he said.

He also answered a few questions on life in the White House and whether it's fun being president, before posing for pictures, shaking hands and wishing the children and their teachers happy holidays.

"I hope you guys have fun," he said. But he said as they open their Christmas presents he hopes they spend time thinking about the less fortunate. "Not everybody is as lucky as we are. There are a lot of kids out there who may not be able to get a lot of presents for Christmas because their parents don't have a lot of money."

"Of Thee I Sing" has done well in early sales. With a list price of $17.99, it sold 50,000 copies in the first five days, which its publisher, Random House Children's Books, said made it the fastest-selling picture book in company history. The volume was part of a $1.9 million, three-book deal Obama signed with Random House in 2004.

Photo op. Well Mr. Obama sent Washington state federal funds for schools and guess what the Washington legislature did with the money on a Saturday emergency session a week ago? They didn't use the funds for schools but paid down the state's deficit. Obama gave the state a kick back with no strings. Wink wink. So class sizes for second graders like the ones in this photo op will have larger class sizes in Washington State. Teacher will be laid off. Other school staff will be laid off.

So even though schools did well and were suppose to get this as an added bonus to do even better then got the shaft from Washington DC politicians and Washington State politicians.

About 8 years ago the voters of Washington finally passed a law to give teachers a raise after many years without. The Washington legislature never funded it until two years ago and it lasted only one year. So for I can't remember how long teachers have not had a raise and folks wonder why so few great folks go into teaching! This year they took the cost of living raise away too. Also any teachers who went to all the trouble and cost for National Board certification who would get raise for that are now getting a 5K pay cut.

If it weren't so awful it would almost be comical what politicians do to teachers and voters and parents look the other way. No change here with Obama in Office.

You should write to your Congress person if you haven't already. Washington State is not uniquely in that situation you know.

Well my congressman is/was Baird and he is bitter and leaving office. If you write him now he has this automated same response for everything. He has checked out and is bitter with the public.

His shouting matches at town hall meetings are infamous. Then he stopped them altogether.

He met his retirement stuff and has I am sure a golden parachute already lined up. He took trips to the Galapagos Islands I think it was and took his family saying it was state business. He has no shame.

GOP Herrera takes over thanks to clueless democratic party in our state that backed Baird to the bitter end when for years folks were complaining about how out of touch Baird was and how he flip flopped on so many important issues like environment in PNW.

They hated him in Oregon across the river!

He was a psychologist by trade believe it or not but he didn't know how to deal with human beings in discussions. Unbelievable really. He loves to wear double breasted navy blue suits with gold buttons and his is such a snob and prissy puss really and thinks he knows it all and likes to cite his wife's Phd in economics as more proof he knows what he is doing. Clueless really.

I am sure Washington State is not unique at all and all the more reason to be upset that there were no strings attached to those federal funds, it was a kick back.

Why? Just because shrub bungled things while reading to kids does not make for a 'reading to kids is bad' meme.

Ridiculous comment. President's have gone in front of children and read, lectured etc., for as long as I can remember and dare say had their picture taken. Why is it this Prez can't do that in your opinion?

Maybe he could read some of the papers he wrote while in college? Or maybe he could let some of us read them. Why are they sealed?

Is that the best attack you've got?
11:18 AM on 12/19/2010
I predict if President Obama was informed that two major skyscrapers had been hit by planes and the nation was under attack, he'd get up , excuse himself, and leave right away. Bush remained seated with children reading for another eight minutes. But he and Karl Rove later explained it. He didnt want to frighten the children, Yup, that explains it.

To all of you cynics and critics, I am for once thrilled to have a President and a First Lady who actually believe in the importance of education! Between her fight for healthier school lunches and more time during the school week for exercise, her constant visits to schools to talk about the importance of education and explaining to students that each one of them has potential for great things, and his for more affordable higher education and encouraging youngsters from all classes and walks of life to fight for the right for a good education, for equal opportunity for all, this is a truly important role for our First Couple and I applaud them. And this is a wonderful book for children, a book that encourages kids to reach higher and farther, to be smart, educated and creative. And the fact that all proceeds go to a great cause, I am finding it hard to understand any criticism!
