Joe Lieberman Reflects On Crusade To Repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

Joe Lieberman Dadt Repeal

The Daily Beast:

Lieberman says he doesn't know whether the battle will help him politically, and his relationship with home-state Democrats may have deteriorated beyond repair. A Quinnipiac poll last January gave him a 27 percent approval rating among Democrats, and several Dems are weighing a primary challenge for 2012. Lieberman's long-winded preachy style can sound grating to those who disagree with him. But for those who believe that keeping gay soldiers in the closet was a national disgrace, his appeals for equality sounded eloquent.

Lieberman has a record of supporting progressive causes while in the Senate. A record he threw away with his uncompromising devotion to the disaster that was/is the Iraq War, which also resulted in his support for McCain. He is an enigma.

Regardless of whether his motiviation for pushing DADT repeal was political or not, it *WAS* the right thing to do. And he deserves kudos for that.

Whether he deserves re-election, however, is up to the good people of CT.

"Liberal Hero?"

If the H and Z keys were anywhere near each other, I could forgive such a typo.

Joe Lieberman is an interesting case. He got spanked by his base, curved to the Right to get elected as an independent and now seems bent on mending fences with those who had supported him for so many years up until his love affair with Bush and McCain. I'm hunching that Lieberman just secured his re-election next time around.

Gawd, this country. A politician spends two years throwing a monkey wrench in everything, then at the very last minute achieves one, admittedly big, victory and suddenly we see headline like "Is Lieberman a Liberal Hero?"

No! The answer is no, are you kidding?

I can't stomach him either. But give credit where credit is due. For whatever reason, he did it when, apparently, no one else could get it done. Give him a pat on the back. Then retire him next election.

His DADT involvement was definitely politically motivated. He knows he's up for re-election and he can no longer count on the GOP votes that put him over the top during the last election cycle. This is why he was so front and center on this and he made sure everyone knew about it. This smells of political opportunism. The question is "Will voters again be fooled by this man?"

Love how he single handily sank the popular Medicare buy in for those 55 and older which he was for before this corporate masters stood against it. Thus dooming a real public option that could have insured millions, saved Medicare and lead to the curent dog of a plan that may have lost us the House to the planet killing GOP.

Too little, too late. Where was he when the Democrats really needed his vote? Oh yeah, campaigning for McCain.

Real heroes are the unseen Democrats in the Senate that we can trust.

Lieberman deserves to be defeated soundly, regardless of DADT stance.

Well he was already thrown out of the Democratic Party, so we're at least half way there.

Not bad for the Huffington Post. Just read 40 posts here and only two come down on him for his religion. Refreshing

Alf told Willie to vote thumbs up on this one... it doesn't make him a "liberal hero."

A hero is capable of looking past oneself and committing deeds for the greater good. That's impossible for most politicians.

people see right thru you...they still won't vote for you

your past actions have over shadowed you part in this.
