Pearland Oilers Trick Play: Texas High School Team Fools Trinity In State Championship Game (VIDEO)

First Posted: 12/20/10 05:11 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

The Texas Class 5A Division 1 state title game in Cowboys Stadium on Saturday featured an unbelievable trick play. The Pearland offense pretended to be confused about the play call and didn't get set while the Euless Trinity defense stood there waiting for something to happen. The center snapped the ball and the wide receiver on the outside sprinted down the field. The trick didn't fool the cornerback, but the receiver was still able to run by him, catch the long pass and score a touchdown. The Oilers went on to upset Trinity 28-24 and were crowned state champs. Scroll down to watch the trick play.

Good reason it's the defense job to allways be ready. Offense doesn't have to wait for defense to make adjustments. Good coaching from Pearland, they found a weakness and took advantage which earned them a well deserved state title.

Ah, Texas high school football. Now I want to go re-read Friday Night Lights. :)

What I am reading from many is that it was a Cheap play.. I didnt see anything cheap about it. Where was the defense? Why were they waiting and taking cues to see what the offense was going to do. They shouldve been on the line ready to go no matter what. Even with the trick play.. no one watched the QB as he had the ball and cocked his arm more than once to throw. Even though the defense fell for it. I would still give a gold star to the cornerback who stayed with the play.

Where's the honor in winning through under-handed trickery?

honor..? obviously you never played organized sports...the proper credo is "get away with what you can"

I feel your cynicism. When adults teach young athletes this kind of stuff, no wonder they grow up thinking it's OK to line up along the sideline of a football field and tripping football players as they run by.

The defense needs to learn they don't have a quarterback while they are on the field.

That was beautiful. Good coach.

It was really almost funny; if it wern't in a championship game.

I'm impressed with the corner, though he got beat. It seems he's the only one that didnt get fooled on that play.

Trick play or cheat play? How good can you feel about winning when you had to cheat to do it? Sorry but I feel that teaching kids that using plays like this to win is no way to teach them what is right from what is wrong. I know it is just a game but these kids learn from this game.

It's just a trick. They're playing smarter, not harder. I think that's a good thing

Seriously? You're going to throw the 'c' word out there? Every part of the play was completely legal and within the rules.

Is it cheating if you lateral the ball 7 times to get a TD? Or if you fake a punt or field goal? Give me a break. The kids are learning that there are ways to use the rules to their advantage. That's exactly what a "trick play" is: catching the defense off guard because of either something unconventional or by making the play look like something else.

Ok cheat was not the correct word but the play certainly does not fall under the same catagory as laterals or faking a kick. As the poster belows suggests, I like the word, cheap better than cheat. With the plays you mentioned the defense has a chance and the offense actually beats them, they did not beat them in this game. I think it teaches children that twisting the rules to fit even when you are being unfair is ok to some people. I still would not feel as though I had won fairly. All my opinions, all of which I am entitled to.

Pearland did that to the number 1 team in the nation. Heard that Trinity Euless were doing alot of cursing after words.
08:31 AM on 12/22/2010
How can you know to say it's the number one team in the nation...what, did Mel Kiper tell you that?
05:04 PM on 12/23/2010
There is a nationwide poll conducted of sports writers from major media outlets and this year Trinity received the most #1 votes. Not to say that it is accurate, but there actually IS a national ranking.
