Alaska To Sue U.S. Fish And Wildlife Over Polar Bear Protection Habitat

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska officials filed notice Tuesday that the state would sue the federal government over a decision to designate a swath of the Arctic as critical habitat for polar bears faced with the effects of climate change.

Republican Gov. Sean Parnell contends the critical habitat designation, which covers 187,000 square miles and was announced by the Obama administration last month, will delay jobs and increase costs – or even kill – resource development projects that are important to Alaska.

"Once again, we are faced with federal overreach that threatens our collective prosperity," he said. "We don't intend to let this stand."

The added protection in the Arctic for polar bears does not in itself block economic activity or other development, but requires federal officials to consider whether a proposed action would adversely affect the polar bear's habitat and interfere with population recovery.

The Interior Department said the designation will help polar bears to stave off extinction as they face the melting of Arctic sea ice. The animals are listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act.

Parnell argues that the critical habitat designation in the oil-rich Arctic could result in hundreds of millions of dollars in lost economic activity and tax revenue for the state.

Alaska officials and the state's oil and gas industry representatives maintain polar bears do not need the added protection of the ESA listing, which they say will hurt offshore drilling efforts and possibly result in hundreds of millions of dollars in lost economic activity and tax revenue.

Already, there are state laws, international agreements and the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act to protect polar bears, Gov. Sean Parnell said Tuesday.

"The polar bear is one of the most protected species in the world," he said.

The state put the federal agency on 60-days notice that it intends to sue unless the critical habitat designation is withdrawn or corrected.

The Fish and Wildlife Service does not comment on pending litigation.

The ESA listing for polar bears, and the designation of critical habitat, will only result in increased regulation and consultation, and likely more litigation, the governor said.

The state also said that areas designated as critical habitat for polar bears includes expanses where there is little or no evidence they are crucial to polar bear conservation.

Nearly 95 percent of the designated habitat is sea ice in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas off Alaska's northern coast.

The threat of a lawsuit over polar bear protection comes as no surprise to environmentalists, said Brendan Cummings, attorney for the Center for Biological Diversity, which filed a lawsuit to get the animals listed and critical habitat designated. The state also has opposed added ESA protection for beluga whales in Cook Inlet and ringed seals.

"They have opposed every Endangered Species Act listing to date," Cummings said.

Remember the Polar Bear they refer to are located in Canada not Alaska. A US President or Congress cannot dictate to a foreign country. You might want to beable to read a map.

I live in Alaska and have been to Barrow, Alaska. There is no danger to the Polar bear. We have no endangered species in Alaska. In fact our animals thrive and we have to relocate them. Maybe you would like a couple polar bear or grizzly located in your neighborhood.

You shouldn't be living in Alaska, they were there first. You know you just moved up there to get away from the blacks & keep your wife trapped like a rat.

Just remember that when it's time to vote: Republicans have opposed every Endangered Species Act listing, to date.

Destroying the environment and killing off entire species of animals just for YOUR benefit is disgusting and very Un-American. Just because Palin was a small time mayor for a very small town filled with small minds, does not mean you can expand your 'visions' to the rest of civilized society!

The idea of federal protection is to preserve for all americans that which a few would claim to be their own and would seek to diminish them for profit.

Uhm, those bears DON'T BELONG TO ALASKA! When are the folks up there gonna get a grip and realize that they DON'T OWN their wildlife. Now, if they would like to remove themselves from the Union and stop taking MORE Federal Welfare per capita than ANY other state, that would be fine, but until then, THEY PLAY BY OUR RULES.

Polar Bears Dwindling in Number
As world leaders debate ways to tackle global warming, conservationists say polar bears are being hit hard. Canada is home to two-thirds of the world's polar bear population, but research has shown the numbers are declining rapidly

Substantial fluctuations in temps and ice are typical of the historic pattern of natural climate change extending back several centuries.

Current research actually says that coastal stations in Greenland are instead experiencing a cooling trend, and average summer air temperatures at the summit of the Greenland Ice Sheet have decreased at the rate of 4°F per decade since measurements began in 1987. The polar bears will be fine. We've already proven global warming data was erroneously "created" by the enviro mentals.

I bet they would approve windmills out there in the middle of nowhere. Please double my electric bill and stick some turbines in the middle of the Chukchi Sea.

The Northern Forum, consisting of 24 sub-national states representing 10 countries around the Artic Circle was formed for the bettement of Northern Peoples everywhere and developing sustainable growth. Heretofore the Governor of Alaska was a director of that Forum but Palin reduced Alaska's participation to the lowest possible degree, stop funds and refused to attend any meetings thus voiding any American voice/input in treaties or pacts to-wards the stated aims and objects of the Forum. Russia, China, the Nordic countries Canada etc. took due notice and have since arrived at ways to exlpore the vast Artic deposits of mineral wealth sans impact to the Inuit peoples....or participation from Alaska. Sad, America sends so many signals of "my way or the highway".........and I bectha nobody else on this thread ever heard of the Northern Forum. I guess Palin is totally pro patria.

"Alaska officials filed notice Tuesday that the state would sue the federal government over a decision to designate a swath of the Arctic as critical habitat for polar bears faced with the effects of climate change."

The polar bear population has increased more than 300% since the time they were placed on the endangered species list - well beyond the point of being an endangered species. Hard to square with the claim that climate change is affecting the polar bear in a negative manner

If you have one Polar Bear one year and then three the next year, that is a 300% increase. The Polar Bear population is STILL stunted as are the thoughts of those folks in AK that believe those bears belong to them. They DON'T. They belong to the world.

What a joke. Is money and financial wealth really all degenerates like these care about? As a species that has the power to forever change the course of this planet, we should take responsibility and protect that which matters most - our only home, and ALL the species that have an equal share of it. Parnell, Palin and all those who think like them should be banished into the exact wilderness they are trying to destroy, so that hopefully, with any luck, it will destroy them. The bears would have meat for months!

This just in - "Polar bears no longer on “thin ice researchers say polar bears could face brighter future"

http://www.fs.fed.us/pnw/news/2010/12/polar-bear.shtml

"...The team’s study is significant. “It demonstrates for the first time that—and how—a combination of greenhouse gas mitigation and control of adverse human activities in the Arctic can lead to a more promising future for polar bear populations...."

"greenhouse gas mitigation". As I see it, absolutely NOTHING has been mitigated at all. Since 2007, CO2 emission just keeps going UP! http://gyandotcom.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/global-carbon-emission.png

Show me this 'mitigation' thing or admit that polar bears were never endangered by 'global warming'. That was correctly reported by polar bear field researcher Mitchell Taylor who was then ostracized for reporting his results.

Polar bears were indeed almost hunted to extinction ~50 years ago. Their population was as low as 5000 but is now stable between 20,000 to 40,000 (depending upon who you wish to believe). Nobody disagrees that hunting regulations led to the polar bear recovery that continues per the above articles own admission. How was that possible while CO2 kept going up?
