Today is the first day of winter, marked by the winter solstice, the year's shortest day. The winter solstice this year coincides with a total lunar eclipse, the first time the two events have overlapped in 372 years.

In honor of this special winter solstice, we've rounded up some of the best books about the winter. From skiing to dog sledding, winter plays host to a number of incredible events, and now's our chance to celebrate the season.

Farley Mowat is missing from this list. While not all his subjects are wintery, he does capture a round the season northern-clime cachet.

Not a very good list. Too specific , How about the "Last town on Earth" or some deep internal mystery to represent the season more succintly. Great winter novels that plunge the depths of mens soul when eclipses forbode dark under currents . ?? Something Pagan or Druid ???
