Homeless Families In America Increase By 9 Percent

Homeless Families

First Posted: 12/22/10 02:11 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Released Tuesday, the U.S. Conference of Mayors 2010 Status Report on Hunger & Homelessness in American Cities -- in their annual assessment of 26 American cities -- has tallied a 9 percent overall increase in the number of homeless families in the U.S in the past year. Fifty-eight percent of the cities analyzed showed an increase in family homelessness.

Based on this survey, on an average night, 1,105 family members are on the streets, 10,926 find refuge in an emergency shelter, and 15,255 stay in transitional homes.

Trapped in this deteriorating economy, low-income families find themselves stuck in financial sinking sand and, though they have work, must move out of their homes, and onto the streets because of low wages.

Peggy Rivera, the Oxnard Commission on Homelessness' chairwoman, spoke with the Ventura County Star about the homeless families in their city:

We have whole families that have lost their homes and don't have the credit rating to get into another apartment and don't have the savings to afford first- and last-month rent payments.

These are working families. They just don't have the resources to put a roof over their head.

Another report conducted this winter by the Working Poor Families Project found that in 2009, "forty-five million people, including 22 million children, lived in low-income working families" -- a population distressed over the past year.

Maria Foscarinis, executive director for the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty, spoke with the Huffington Post on the rise in family homelessness spelled out in the report. "Many of these folks are children. That means a lot of kids are experiencing homelessness, and that can be very devastating for them in terms of impact on their mental health," she says. "It can have an impact on their schooling. That can affect their long-term ability to be employed in a meaningful way.

"We're really worried about the prospects for the future."

Take the Correa family of Sarasota County; their story is familiar to many. Gabriel Correa -- father of four -- spoke with the Herald Tribune about his temporary job:

When I am working, we can survive, but when I can't find work, it is a battle.

Before the recession, Correa and his wife, Maria Alarcon, were able to make ends meet and provide for their children. Without consistent and decent-paying work, Correa finds it hard to keep a roof over their heads.

Seventy-nine percent of the households with children accounted for in the U.S. Conference of Mayors Report claimed that the main cause was unemployment, and 72 percent declared lack of affordable housing. Among other causes claimed by these families ( i.e. poverty and domestic violence), low paying jobs was mentioned as the main cause by one fifth of the population surveyed.

Homeless shelters will soon become overcrowded with the advancing winter weather. More and more families are losing their homes.

The Salvation Army asks that you sponsor a family this Christmas through their Adopt-a-Family Program. Common Ground, a nationwide organization working to end homelessness and re-house families, asks you to "Sponsor a Home" and help supply their apartments with the necessities families require to get back on track. You can also contact your local shelters and transition homes to find out specific ways you can lend a hand to the homeless families near you.

Heard under every homeless camp bridge: "If we can only make one banker happy, then all this is worth it". "We give up all for their bonuses".

It is time for American business to do something for America and Americans.

Each American company CEO needs to look at where they can hire and help
reduce the unemployment rate in this country.

Each American company CEO needs to look at their purchasing policies and
see what they can do to make more of an effort to buy American made products.

Each American company CEO needs to look at how many workers they have hire
that are H1B visa workers and make more of an effort to hire Americans.

Each American company CEO that has been hiring temporary workers from overseas
for their tourism jobs needs to look at recruiting in American colleges to fill those jobs.

Each American company CEO that has been hiring undocumented workers needs to
look at our local high schools and colleges help provide them the work experience they need.

Each American company CEO that is producing products overseas needs to take
a hard look at bringing those jobs home to American workers.

Each American company CEO needs to realize that if American workers have no jobs
they will have no money and the there will be no customers.

Every American should make an effort to buy one American made product this
holiday season.

The very wealthy in this country are playing a very dangerous game by denying the obvious economic crumbling of america. When you got nothing you got nothing to lose and when you are trying to survive you are capable of doing anything to maintain life and limb.

If we have thousands of children growing up with no future and no chance at upward mobility what we have is a apocalyptic society where the most powerful will be those who have guns and know how to use them. The wealthy will be hold up in gated and protected communities, afraid to venture beyond it walls.

Is is better to pay the piper or suffer the apocalypse.

I was thinking pretty much the same. The Over Lords would be wise to lay low now, and allow some wealth to be felt by the rest of the nation. Not just the top 2%.

A certain man in Germany during the 30's did not rise to power with simply a message of hate. He advocated rebuilding Germany, wanted a "Volkswagon in every driveway". Its only a matter of time before someone here decides to mobilize our down trodden into a political force.

The only questions are when, and what direction it will take.

With untold subdivisions of Mcmansions and condos sitting empty we should give them to the homeless , let the wealthy bankers eat the cost and by that i don't mean from company profits take the cost from they're personal wealth .
Its time they paid up and took some responsibility wall street greed and ignorance did this they should pay the bill .

They have a beautiful family and I hope they get some help very soon. One thing that we do not always see and that is a father with the family, and we have to look at ways we might have contributed to driving fathers out of families with various welfare and housing policies. Anything we can do to keep both parents together and focused on providing for their children we should do, and we should look at ways that well-meaning laws have contributed to fathers not being able to stay with their children. mg

Only in America can 1% of the population have 24% of the wealth and we spend billions each week to fight for Oil Companies to steal from others while people are homeless...PRICELESS!
But the Rethuglicians would have you believe unemployed people don't want to work and should make takers of unemployement compensation REPAY the money, while giving the money to banks that gamble with ours.

Mr. President, and Dems in Congress, please hear me clearly; I dont give a DAYUM what repubs want. I DONT want you selling our people short for the spirit of "bipartisanship".

What I DO want is for you to focus on our people. They need help. Roosevelt understood that, and created The WPA & CCC. Roosevelt attacked the business community, the speculators. He kept Americans in their homes, he didnt say he wouldnt intervene in foreclosures for fear of "helping those who dont deserve it."

Invest in our Nation by investing in OUR PEOPLE. The hel1 with the uber rich, they have enough. Help our people, Mr. President.

I just can't even believe that we SIGNIFICANTLY LOWERED TAXES FOR THE SUPER RICH, AGAIN! WHEN are we going to RAISE TAXES on the SUPER RICH back up to 90% where they USED to be during our economic GLORY days? (From 1936 until 1982 the tax rate on dollars over 1 million (adjusted for inflation) was over 70%. It was 94% in 1944 and well into the 50s. We were fine. There were still plenty of rich people, it's just that 2%of the population did not control 50% of the wealth in this country. In fact, we did AMAZINGLY well with high taxes, in fact, we did amazingly well BECAUSE of high taxes (and strong Unions and regular STRIKES)

Until we can get manufacturing back on our shores, homelessness is going to keep increasing.

The way to to that is to re establish tariffs on imports. "Free Trade" is the abandonment of tariffs. Every time you hear someone say "Free Trade" say, "No. Tariffs is the way to get Americans to buy Made in the USA products through artificially higher prices on imported goods." The billions of dollars that will be paid to Customs Agents at the ports will be a new source of income for the Federal Government. That money can be used to help US Businesses in the form of infrastructure projects like a new, efficient electrical grid, featuring a large percentage of Green Energy, which will also help the entire country, just as an example. Better roads, is another. You get the idea. The idea, actually, is an old one. It even has a name: "The American System", and it was invented by Alexander Hamilton, no less. It was advocated, championed, actuallly by the greatest senator in our history, Henry Clay, and, the Greatest President in our history, Abraham Lincoln. "Free Trade" is the abandonment of tariffs in the hopes that we can sell more of our stuff overseas. Problem is, is that other countries wont lower thier tariffs because they saw just how effective "The American System" was for us, and they now want to copy it. China and India are just two examples. We need to abandon "Free Trade" and re adopt "The American System".

The problem is the rent is too da_n high!
Wages have been depressed, jobs going away, survival expenses going up, is all adding up, and putting 1/3 of American families into poor conditions, and the number of homeless is unconscionable.
America has become a cold, stone hearted tyrant to it's people, dominated by the super rich shadow elite.

30 years of Republican rule of trickle-down economics that hasn't led to economic growth, income growth, wage growth or job creation; 30 years of Republicans weakening our workforces through union busting and deregulating business orders; 30 years of Republicans over-turning the Sherman Anti-trust laws; 30 years of Republicans deregulated banking agreements and Wall Street that led to the largest financial worldwide economic meltdown of which assured us of years and years of massive unemployment ... deja-vu.

It is not a 'party' specific dynamic- as BOTH 'parties' (Democrat and Republican) have eaten from the Corporate trough of confluence. Both have been in the pocket of special interest for money and career enhancement.

WE the People do NOT matter, and our vote is nothing more than our voluntary participation in the Kabuki theater known as 'national elections'

I've been reading through these posts and see the same talking point over and over - 30 years of Republican blah blah blah vs only 4 years of Democrat control. By this you obviously admit that you are not only talking about the presidency, but also Congress and Senate. Well, the Democrats have controlled Congress from 1949 to 1993, which eats well into your 30 years of Republican control. Then you have the Senate which was controlled by Democrats from 1987 to 1993 and again in 2001 and again starting in 2007. Then Clinton was president from 1993 to 1999. So how is the entire mess that we are in now only on the shoulders of one party?

Because only one party has systemacticly worked at dismatling the government while catering to the rich and corporate interest while transfering the wealth of the middle class to the rich and cutting social programs for the greater good of the average person.

But they have contributed to the greater good by showing us how terrible life can be if you are not attached to, or work for, the über rich. Hey folks, you voted for Ron Reagan and Bush and the Repubs. You watched as corporations ship jobs over seas; you applauded the lie of trickle down economics; you did nothing as the one worker household vanished. Only now do you see the results, the spirtual heirs of Reagan and Friedman like the callous Az Gov Jan Brewer are planning on reducing taxes for businesses and cutting Az Medicaid out of the budget so at least another 300,000 people will be without healthcare in Az ( already she has cut organ transplants for the poor, you can betcha that meds for long tern care patients will be next. ).

But this is what you voted for. So man up and watch the people suffer. Or force the corporations and governments to change wage scales and tax policies.

American Intellectuals/ Liberals: People whom naively believe our elected officials care about us as a society, and assume those whom do not share there view are intellectually (and personally) inferior, as they are keepers of the 'facts'

American Conservatives: People who believe their elected officials act from the 'word of god', and therefore cannot be wrong; and are above reproach, having little education themselves. They also liberal intellectuals to be possessed by demons..

Both groups= The Inane Stupidity of These United States..which will both help further establish USA Inc, no longer a country, but a corporate controlled monolith.

I was out shopping today and was practically shaking with anger by the time I got home. I drove past so many people standing on corners holding signs begging for work. Then I read articles like this and I'm beyond angry that these things are happening in this country and that we as a society have turned our backs on the children and their families. We live in a place where the bankers are getting richer by the day, the wealthy are seeing their bottom line rise faster than any other period in history, and yet we have millions of children without a place to sleep at night?

What's even worse are the people who come here and post nasty and vile things. Even more ironic that they're the same people who proclaim their christianity and the holiness of this season.

Kinda funny cuz up until now, I found them annoying but now I'm getting really ticked off and if enough of us reach our limit with the selfishness, perhaps we can join forces to turn this terrible tide around.

This simple outrageous. The bonuses from Wall Street from the past couple of years should have been stripped and the proceeds used to help out families to keep them off the streets. The big banks that sold shady mortgages should have been broken up and some of their assests sold to assist families they ripped off.

Ignoring this problem will not make it go away, sadly this is going to get worse for a while.
