guardian.co.uk:

Whenever the talk turns to Zuckerberg, numbers keeps popping up: 550m (the number of Facebook users worldwide); 26 (his age); 35 (his position on the Forbes list of wealthiest Americans); 6.9bn (dollars; his estimated net worth).

But the number that captured my attention -- and admiration -- is 100m (again dollars; the amount he decided to donate to the public school system in Newark, New Jersey, a place he's never lived).

Quit Facebook Now. It is for the narcissists, for people who love pictures of themselves , men who can't commit and women who watch The Bachelor.

Every time I see a photo of Mark with his bright smile and his air-brushed complexion, I find myself wondering if he's an animitornic or a claymation. I can't decide.

It seems like the media world has realized that Facebook controls much internet traffic, so they are bending over backward to say nice things about whatshisface. its like kissing the kings rings; do they really love the king? or are they grovelling sycophants? big charity announcements like 100 to newark schools are nice PR tricks but they also bring to mind the imbalanced tax system that gives billionaires more pocket money for fiddle faddle at the expense of hundreds of millions of struggling americans. and of course the gross mismanagement of global economics and politics- aka 1 Billion people living in cardboard boxes and shanty towns around the world. if one truly believes in common good of a more interconnected society - and the power of collective intelligence, then one would imagine that you would work hard to develop and connect the wasted multi billion brain resource that is being left to rot and die from malnutrician. 100M goes a lot further around the world than in newark.

If it was actually given, and not a "pledge," then Zuckerberg deserves kudos.

Boy!  Facebook is getting a LOT of attention lately: 60 minutes, Time's "Man of the Year", Social Network movie.  It seems to me that this guy is the MSM darling.

The so-called $100 million was never payed, it was a PR stunt.
This guy is dirt compared to the work that others such as Bill Gates have done.

He hasn't given the schools one penny. He set conditions on giving the money, which the state and the school districe cannot not do. This was all PR so people would not pay attention to the movie Social Network. He did this at the same time the movie about him came out.

Ted Turner gave one billion dollars in 1997 to the United Nations for a variety of humanitarian causes and he didn't win Person of the Year.

Well said! I don't get why the media is fawning over this guy. As for the 100 million donation, it comes with a price. He is getting something from the deal!

applause will come naturally enough when his philanthropy is realized and useful to others, not just to establish his giving reputation as a PR move to sugar-coat his activities, past and present.

Wow. could this be the "trickle down" effect that the liberals here hate?

A free man (billionaire) spending or donating his money. No gov't force necessary.

how about that libs?

Look at our country and then tell me that the rich are giving enough.

When i look at our county i see the richest, most successful country in the world with opportunity unsurpassed anywhere else in the world.

I see people knocking down our doors trying to get in (USA leads the world in immigration yearly).

What do YOU see?

No, this is the rich having so much more money than anyone could ever need or want that they could spare some in a PR move. Nothing is trickling down, never has, never will.

You gotta give it Zuckerberg. He built a billion dollar business from humble beginnings, stayed the course, and became a billionaire under 30. That's quite impressive!

Yes. As much as I don't like FB, if he's giving millions to charities/causes, I'm happy about it.
03:05 PM on 12/22/2010
Yet he would not let the guvmint spend his money for him.

Yeah, there isn't anything more humbling than stealing someone's ideas and making billions.
