The 13 Funniest Christmas Songs You Never Hear On The Radio (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 12/23/10 08:37 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Plenty of truly terrible Christmas songs get played ad nauseum during this time of year, but the most inexplicably overplayed songs are the "novelty" variety. Do we really need to hear "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" or "All I Want For Christmas Are My Two Front Teeth" again, especially when there's no shortage of "funny" Christmas songs that actually make us laugh? Here are 13 such songs that we wish radio DJs would trade with "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer." Vote for the funniest!

I happen to enjoy hearing Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer, I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas , All I Want for Christmas are My Two Front Teeth, and I'm Getting Nothing for Christmas, and wish they would be played more. I also love The Twelve Days of Christmas. Tom Lehrer's song is funny, too. Another funny one is Straight No Chaser's version of The Twelve Days of Christmas. (And for those of you who may wonder if all I care about are the novelty songs, I love Christmas songs that actually have something to do with why we celebrate Christmas, and hate to hear when those songs get mangled.)

You gotta hear this one: "I Wanna Hippopotamus for Christmas!" The kids at my school sang it this year and I was really stumped. I'd never heard it at all. Supposedly, it comes from an old Shirley Temple movie.

The reason you won't hear any of these on Lite FM at Christmastime is simple: The programmers want "cute," not "funny," and for the most part, these examples of songs you'd like to hear aren't mainstream (yes, even "Dick in the Box" from "SNL"). You have to remember that the typical Lite FM listener is someone who takes "Idol" and "Dancing WIth the Stars" seriously and loves "Two-and-a-Half Men."

Okay, I'm a 70-year-old lady here spitting my ginger ale onto the keyboard over those beautifully gift-wrapped boxes of junk!!! Haven't laughed so hard in a long time. Been a slow year humor-wise!!!

My favorite was from the Colbert Christmas Special. It was the Willie Nelson song. I'm surprised it didn't make the list.

I love that song. "Nutmeg" is another song that you are definitely not going to hear on the radio!

I am choked. All this talk of Christmas, it is already the 25th of December and I have not heard a whisper about pantomime, let alone a promise of one. I have my tutu polished and perked ready for the reprise of my role as Tinkerfoot, too. There is no justice in the world, no justice at all.

How could you not include THE definitive Weird Al Christmas song - "The Night Santa Went Crazy".

Nothing from Bob Rivers? He's Twisted Christmas albums are a must play at our house every year, along with the Chipmunks, the Partridge Family, The Jingle Cats (drives our real cats crazy), Michael McDonald, Amy Grant, The Lettermen, Bobby Sherman, Michael W. Smith, Chicago, Peter Cetera, The Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Mannheim Steamroller, and every other sappy, sentimental and catchy Christmas album. This time of year I'm just a 12 year old from 1972.
