Our favorite part about the holiday season (among many other things) is those gorgeous Christmas trees that suddenly appear in town squares, museums and shopping malls, decked out like queens, a tourist attraction in their own right. Living in New York, we are lucky enough to see some of the most beautiful specimens, but tree decor is a passion everywhere Christmas is celebrated.

From old school to avant-garde, here are our picks of some of the most beautiful and interesting Christmas trees around the world!

Best trees: Rockefeller Center and Sydney. Brandenburg Gate, too, was good. Even a few of the cone-shaped pseudo trees were interesting...but some were just plain ugly.

The DC tree was almost disgraceful, as if the decorators were too lazy to run the lights around the tree and just flopped them on from the top.

And then there was the one they missed, the "angel" tree at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC; find it here: http://www.metmuseum.org/special/Christmas2005/view_1.asp?item=0&view=l

That tree in Red Square was excellent. So was Rockefeller Center, Rio, Prague, Paris, and the Brandenburg Gate tree (which was old-fashioned but well done.)

Some of those weren't actually, uh, trees.

The European trees are old fashion and beautiful, reminds a person of the Christmas Trees of old!

Trees were dragged into huts in ancient times, to burn for 12 days, for the Winter Solstice. That's how Christmas tress began.

Attention decorators: don't put up a cone, drape it with lights and ask me to think that's a tree. I know what tree looks like and a cone ain't it!

The national christmas tree is actually quite ugly. It looks like a big plastic thing from Walmart. The national menorah and yule log are consistent with the rest of the decor. Put it on the list of "we came here for this?" christmas trees.

Don't all these trees make you want to rush out and buy a bunch of junk made in China?

You'd think the Vatican tree would be a bit more elaborate since the holiday is resultant of the majority of its followers belief.

This isn't the highest holy day we celebrate. The pull out the stops for Easter. In addition, the tree isn't religious in nature.

Yes, it is. The tree is very religious, pagan of course, but religious!

I was lucky enough to be in Rome at Christmas and I felt the same way; however, I was told the tree is essentially a pagan symbol and the real beauty of Christmas is represented by the incredible and life-sized statues in the Vatican's Nativity scene. It is truly the most beautiful Nativity I've ever seen and it was hand-carved in wood by a 19th century craftsman. The detail is just magnificent!

the one in london shouldn't be on the list. it looks underdecorated. needs more lights??

Here's what you do, in three easy steps:

1) look at the photos above. Pick your favorite tree. Isn't it beautiful? Isn't it "worth traveling to see"?
2) carefully plan your trip. Budget for all reasonable expenses. Determine your total cost.
3) take the total you figured out in step 2, write it on a cheque, and send that cheque to your local homeless shelter.

There: you've honored Christmas in the manner that Jesus (the birthday Boy, after all) would have wanted you to.

Merry Christmas, and God bless us, everyone.

Me too! I lived in Rio from 1984 to 1994 and they didn't have the lagoon tree then.
New Years Eve on the beach in Copacabana was always awesome. It was usually a hassle to get there since the main streets are all closed - forget driving, there is nowhere to park, you had to take a cab or a bus and hoof it like 10 blocks to get to the beach. Even so, I went every year, even times when I had decided not to, always at the last minute I just had to get over there.
