Hillary Clinton's Decade In Style (PHOTOS, POLL)

First Posted: 12/23/10 01:34 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Over the last ten years, Hillary Clinton has gone from First Lady to Senator to Secretary of State, and her wardrobe has shifted with her. She started out the decade in gowns and skirt suits and ended it with the now-famous, following exchange in Kyrgyzstan:

MODERATOR 1: Okay. Which designers do you prefer?
SECRETARY CLINTON: What designers of clothes?
MODERATOR 1: Yes.
SECRETARY CLINTON: Would you ever ask a man that question? (Laughter.) (Applause.)

Well, we might, but that's not the point. While we agree she doesn't need to drop designer names, we've still been enjoying the last few years of Hillary's rainbow of pantsuits and her occasional frock à la Chelsea's wedding.

Take a look at Hillary's standout ensembles from the last decade and tell us what you think.

Almost all of her pants are hemmed too short. Most of her pants are also strangely tapered, when they should not be (tapered pants have not been in style for a very long time, certainly not in the past decade). Because she is somewhat pear-shaped, straight-legged pants, hemmed several inches longer, would have been far more flattering. I do like almost all of her tops/jackets, though (but I hate the floral tapestry one). Her gown for Chelsea's wedding seems an odd choice for her; it's almost too girlish, but I really do like it. The Kennedy Center Honors peach satin gown is just a bad color for her. I hate the pumpkin-colored presidential debate ensemble and the royal blue suit. I can't even begin to explain the hair clip she wore with the blue suit. I understand where she was going with the Morocco state dinner gown, but it just looks silly on her. I do not understand the greenish gown with the crazy pattern and bat wings. I really like the black tiered gown and the brown satin gown. So, except for her truly awful pants, I think she has had more hits than misses.

Now I know why she lost out to Mr. Obama. Somehow, between the early 2000s and 2007, she lost her way and began wearing completely unflattering outfits. That rust-colored thing for the debate was SO wrong; she looked like the Great Pumpkin, Homespun Style rather than a presidential candidate. And that outfit for Chelsea's wedding. EEEEEEEEEgad! Who talked her into that one? I think she's excellent in her current role...but please, someone, send the lady to a good stylist. While the clothes may not make the woman, being properly AND attractively dressed/coifed is still, one hates to say, one of the things a woman must do to obtain the same level of gravitas as a man. The only way around it to have a huge personality (Eleanor Roosevelt, Bella Abzug), in which case that does it for her and she can wear a housecoat and fuzzy slippers and still be taken seriously. Mrs. Clinton is smart and attractive, but her personality is not so outsized as that.

She looks great. I wouldn't have picked some of the outfits for her, but who doesn't have an off day. She's received flak in the past about all of her pantsuits...but she's a woman on the move. It's more comfortable wearing slacks when you're got things to do, places to go, and people to see.

This woman is an accomplished politician, a skilled attorney, and the Secretary of State of a major world power and the best HuffPost can give us is this idiotic inane fluff piece about her GD FASHION SENSE? Pathetic! Are male politicians treated this way? No, they're not. Get it together, HuffPost. You can do better.

Agree - although I do think her shorter hairdo is more flattering.

I love the first dress the best followed by the jacket she wore in Kabul. However, why aren't we ranking the clothes of male politicians too? Seems silly that one of the most powerful people in the world has a slideshow on her clothes but not on her accomplishments.

My thought as well. Why do we talk of her clothes and male politicians' actions. Her actions are much more interesting.

Through all the photos, I have to say her campaign era hair was sharp and her suits just wonderful.

Hillary has always been known for not being slavish to fashion. She is an amazing, intelligent, empathetic, cultured woman with a strong moral compass. Why can men wear the same suit and tie over and over on many occasions and women can't? She ought to be able to bring out her navy blue inauguration gown and some of her other favs and wear them over and over again..

Hillary is one amazing woman. I think she's absolutely a role model for every modern woman today. She looks amazing with kaftans, and outfits with small and simple details.

A note to the people who want to fight on this thread... I am not going to tolerate this in general, and especially not on Christmas. Can't the group of you give it a rest for one day?

I cannot work to get control of the troll problem when I am constantly mediating disagreements between our regulars and their cliques. It seems like that is all I do any more. Constant bickering and infighting. Those of you who are involved know who you are, and many of you have gotten notes from me.

If I have to send any more notes, they will be suspension notices. Yes, I am upset.

To our CM2's, please fell free to delete any non-civil comments between our bickering regulars, and please email me about them at community-support@huffingtonpost.com for further disciplinary action.

Mrs. Clinton can wear anything she likes. She has taste and class. She is one of the most intelligent ladies this world has. I wish we more like her. I just love this lady. She is a beautiful human being, inside and outside.

my favorite was Hillary in the orange blazer, at a 2008 presidential debate; she looked stunning.

at the risk of infuriating readers, she needs to get back to her 2003 weight, and shorten her hair; the longer hair does not flatter but drags her features down; sadly, she looks so tired these days with her grueling job;

I wish Santa would bring Ms.Clinton a great new hairstyle -- her present one looks like she doesn't have much time to give to it.

She's the Secretary of State for crying out loud. Her hair isn't, nor should it be, her first priority. Go critique a male politician's hair. Sheesh.

1) This is in the Style Section, not Politics.
2) The article is solely about Hillary Clinton.
3) The subject is Hillary Clinton's physical- appearance- kinda-style, not her political style.
