Obama Caps Quiet Christmas By Visiting U.S. Troops

Obama Christmas Troops

JULIE PACE   12/25/10 10:21 PM ET   AP

HONOLULU — President Barack Obama capped a quiet Christmas Saturday with a surprise visit to a Marine base to thank U.S. troops for the sacrifices they've made, including being away from their families at the holidays.

The president, along with his wife, Michelle Obama, spent more than an hour shaking hands and hugging service members who had arrived for Christmas dinner at the mess hall at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. It's the third year in a row the Obamas have visited the base on Christmas.

The president, dressed casually in a short-sleeved shirt and dark grey pants for the most visible outing of his Hawaiian vacation thus far, made no formal remarks, instead greeting service members individually. He told one athletic-looking man that he should join Obama's basketball team so the president could avoid getting an "elbow in the lip", a reference to the injury Obama suffered during a game last month.

With U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan, Iraq and other outposts around the world, the Obamas also used the president's weekly radio and Internet address to encourage Americans to find ways to support service members during the holiday season.

"Let's all remind them this holiday season that we're thinking of them, and that America will forever be here for them, just as they've been there for us," the president said.

Mrs. Obama , who has made working with military families one of her top priorities as first lady, said Americans don't need to be experts in military life in order to give back to those who serve their country. She urged the public to reach out through their schools and churches, or volunteer with organizations that support military families.

"Anybody can send a care package or pre-paid calling card to the front lines, or give what's sometimes the most important gift of all: simply saying thank you," Mrs. Obama said.

Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, spent Christmas in Washington, where they visited wounded soldiers and their families at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

The Obamas and daughters Malia and Sasha are staying at a luxurious oceanfront home in Kailua. The first family celebrated Christmas with a small circle of friends and family, including some of Obama's childhood friends and the president's sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, who lives here on Oahu, the island where Obama was born and spent much of his childhood.

The Obamas dined on steak, roasted potatoes, green beans and pie, and the sports-obsessed president got a chance to relax and watch some NBA basketball.

The president's Christmas was been far quieter than last year's holiday, when a 23-year-old Nigerian man allegedly attempted to blow up a plane bound for Detroit. The incident raised questions about the nation's terror readiness and consumed the rest of Obama's vacation.

Thus far, Obama's excursions in Hawaii have been mostly to the gym and golf course. On Christmas Eve he visited the beach with his daughters.

Mrs. Obama gave some lucky children a Christmas Eve surprise when she answered calls for the "Tracking Santa" program, a Christmas tradition run by the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD. With help from NORAD's Santa Route Schedule, Mrs. Obama was able to tell children Santa's whereabouts as he delivered presents around the world.

The first family has no public events planned during their nearly two-week long vacation. The president, though, is receiving daily briefings, beginning work on January's State of the Union address and evaluating a staff review headed by interim chief of staff Pete Rouse.

Obama arrived in Hawaii on a high note, having secured victories on legislative priorities: ratification of a nuclear arms treaty with Russia and the repeal of the military's ban on gay service members. He also compromised with Republicans to extend tax cuts for all income earners, a deal that angered some liberals but won him rare bipartisan support.

Awaiting Obama in 2011 is an economy still struggling to achieve steady growth, a divided Congress and a host of Republicans ready to run for his job in the 2012 election.

The Obamas are expected to stay in Hawaii through Jan. 2.

I give credit to President Obama as he has worked to maintain solid relations with the brave men and women in uniform who are fighting on 7 fronts with Af-Pak the war so nice we've done it twice, Iraq, Somalia, Yemen, Mexico and Columbia and who knows where else with the Spooks.
$2 Billion a week is what this prosperity vacuum on America costs in Af-Pak alone.
Over $1.6 Trillion on the "war that will  Read More...

Why didn't Obama visit the anti war protestors chaining themselves to the White House fence?
07:16 PM on 12/27/2010
Yeah, I actually work on MCBH. They lock down the gym and all surrounding areas every morning, diverting traffic left and right to form a asphalt maze. Real pain in the ass on such a small base like this.

I was grumbling about it while on hands-free with my misses, whom was just laughing at me b/c I was cussing the president the whole time for jacking up the roads.

Love the guy, but get a gym membership ya bum. ;P I don't like being glared at by Marines on ATVs and paranoid SS agent dudes when I'm on my way to pick up a gallon of milk.

It give 'us' warm and fuzzies?
Do you a have a mouse in your pocket?
Its not for us. It is for them.
Like it or not, understand it or not, we do have a military and it is the Presidents job to lead it not scorn it, to inspire it's loyalty not earn it's hate. Our military was committed to two wars by the Our previous President with Our consent. Our current President is charged with extracting us from this horrendous mistake with the least damage possible. Understand that once you stick your boot into a quagmire the resulting suction tends to prevent removing it without losing the boot. This will be wound down and wound down in such a way as to keep the administration in office which is important if you don't want the people who lead us here to return to power.

Ah, in case you haven't been paying attention, the people in power have the same policies as the people who were in power, except where they are worse.

two pointless wars.

who was the architect of these excursions and why are they not in jail?
12:59 PM on 12/29/2010
Good call, instead of prosecuting Bush and Cheney Obama goes after a world hero, Julian Assange.
This is because, at bottom, Obama has the same world view as Bush: what we say goes.

And this from an ex-law professor. And he gets away with it.

Why haven't we heard anything from Sarah about this? Nothing there to criticize like Mrs. Obama's anti-obesity campaign?

!.When Obama visits the troops it is a photo opportunity, but if he hadn't visted the troops, he would be

Un-American, a Kenyan, an Indonesian, a Muslim, not a REAL American, not a Christian American, doesn't believe in America's exceptionalism, doesn't honor the troops.

2. When you look at the photos of the troops doesn't it strike you, that the great majority aren't REAL Americans, (You know, the Rich WHITE, Christian boys and girls), but they are black and brown, like Africans and Mexicans ?

The majority of troops serving in the military are white, though not necessarily rich.

If you are serious, the United States is doomed.
1. Hawaii has been a state since 1959, ergo President Obama did visit our troops in America.
2. President Obama is obviously more of a citizen than you as he is at least aware of our states.
3. Gee, he travels too much? [regretfully shaking my head]

Is there any way to get our conversations back into the fact-based universe? PLEASE!

Obama Masterful Playing Chess

I begin my "Introduction to American Government" courses at Cal Poly Pomona by teaching students about the ideological spectrum. I discuss the political chess game of ideology. This quarter it was quite confusing for my students to understand Conservatism v. Liberalism because the traditional descriptors for each perspective seemed to flip-flop.
For example, the new tax deal that was signed by President Obama is peppered with ideological contradictions. The bill passed with a 277-148 vote in the House and an 81-19 vote in the Senate.
Traditionally advocates of the underdog, Democrats voted to give the wealthy tax breaks with this bill. Republicans, traditionally advocates of reducing the deficit and adamant opponents of stimulus strategies, voted for this bill. The animated opposition to this bill came mostly from liberal Democrats that were, ironically, afraid of what the $858billion price tag would do to the soaring federal deficit. Many conservative Republicans, who define themselves as "deficit hawks," voted for this bill.
What was more confusing to my students than these ironic twists by politicians is the practical ideological contradictions embraced by the average American. For instance, one of my conservative students who opposes the president's "socialist" agenda was laid off from his job several months ago. I asked him in class how he was surviving.

F&F! Have to repost the article to FB. The other side uses the term elitist as if its a bad thing. They only call him that because he drinks wine, can't bowl, and goes to fancy restaurants at times. What makes him truly an elite is his superior intellect. Watching him prevail in 2012 will be so much fun.

Presidential vacation days first year in office:

Obama – 26 days
George Sr. – 40 days
Reagan – 42 days
George Jr. - 77 days (33% of Presidency spent on vacation)

Carter and Clinton both took fewer vacation days than Obama

I am always so happy when the President takes some time off - he has more on his plate then any of those other Presidents and after he puts his kids to bed he works into the night every night so he is working more hours then any of them also.

Bush not only took a lot of vacations but he put it the fewest hours a week also.
