Puppies are wonderful - and treated right you can't beat a dog as a companion. We have 2. We have a breautiful yellow lab that was a christmas puppy - he was dumped at our door 2 months after Christmas. Nobody wanted him. Now he is 7 years old. you couldn't ask for a better companion than what he has turned out to be.
If people are going to give puppies for Christmas - please be sure that your child is ready for the responsibility. A puppy is cute, but needs to be trained (we start at 6 weeks old). Before giving your child a puppy be sure the child understands how big of a responsibility it is - beyond feeding and playing. Teach your child that puppies can bite if you pull their tail, ears, etc., that puppies need to know what is right and wrong - for your protection and theirs; and that puppies need to be trained to listen to you (it could save their life someday).
Both of our dogs were dumped out on the street as puppies by owners who "thought they were so cute at Christmas" but when the newness wore off - they were left to fend for themselves. luckily they found people who love them.
Adopt a stray - and find a friend for life.

I grew up with dogs, and have two (rescue) of my own now. I will never be without one.

A few years ago, PBS did a wonderful series on dogs, and it ended the show with this very cool Native American story. The story goes that when the Creator was finished creating the Earth, man, and all the animals, he caused a great crack in the earth to forever separate man from animal. And at the last minute, dog leaped across the crack to stand side by side with man.

If you've ever owned one, you know how true this story feels.

That's a great story. F&F just for that. I love dogs too and haven't been without one (or more) since 1996. They're just the best and some cheap entertainment!

On the other side of the spectrum, I would love to receive an older dog for Christmas, birthday, whenever. Dogs are the greatest creatures on Earth.

You got that right. I've had dogs all my life, but it brakes my heart when they die. It just breaks my heart.

My sentiments too. My beloved cocker spaniel died a year ago. I sat with him and loved him up his final 24 hours. His eyes just followed me around the room whenever I moved. He was 3 months shy of 15 years old and I had him since he was 8 weeks. I thought I could not go through the heartache again, but hence my screen pic is my new companion who is struggling to fill his shoes. She is such an imp and I love her so already!

It really depends on how much time you spend at home. It's true, if you work 10 hours a day and can't afford to send your dog to doggie day care, it's maybe not such a good plan. (If you can afford doggie day care, go for it, dogs love to play with other dogs all day.)

But otherwise -- I gotta tell you, there was a time, about 15 years back, when I was going through a very tough time financially (am self-employed), and I was all alone -- and one of the things that really helped was, I found an abandoned puppy on the street, so now I had 2 big dogs in a small apartment. And taking care of them -- they needed a lot of exercise -- really added to my life, helped me keep a positive attitude and fix my problems. It was like, I saved the puppy and he saved me.

Our local shelter here won't let people adopt during the XMAS week because the adoptions are often impulsively done and the animals end up right back there. But here's to all of the people who understand the responsibilities and take them seriously. Loving my 10 year old cat boy who came home with me from the shelter!

Shelter pets seem to turn out to be the best pets. A few years ago my daughter's then boyfriend got her a kitten from a rescue organization. He was found on the street at seven months old with broken hips from being hit by a car. They operated on him and set his hips. Special instructions came with him. He has permanent severe arthritis, especially in this weather, from the broken hips and he has an unusual gait. My daughter calls it his pimp walk...lol. She has special pain relieving spray to spray on his hind legs when the arthritis flares up.
But he is worth all that. THis is one cool cat and I am not usually a big cat lover. He's an orange tabby mixed with, of all things, an egyptian cat. Very cool looking. He actually comes when you call his name which is unusual for a cat.
My daughter, just 21, went through a big ordeal last spring, healthwise. She was diagnosed with the very start of cervical cancer. It was a tough time for her. SHe was in pain and hemorraging a lot and lost an alarming amount of weight. Not to mention she was going through emotional muck in her relationship. THat cat is what kept her sane, she says. So she too was saved by the animal that she saved.
Linc (Lincoln Continental) is now apart of our family. I even bought him a holiday gift and I call him my grandcat.

It's a great gift. It makes the children happy and, with this ongoing economy, might fill their stomachs next Christmas.
