Queen Elizabeth II & Camilla Called Out For Donning Fur Hats On Christmas Day (PHOTOS, POLL)

First Posted: 12/27/10 10:20 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

British animal rights organization Animal Aid has some not-so-nice words for Queen Elizabeth II and the Duchess of Cornwall, who were spotted in Russian-style fur hats on Christmas day, the Daily Mail reports. Director Andrew Tyler remarked, "This strikes me as an ostentatious display of cruelty. To parade fur in 2010 says something unpleasant about the person wearing it."

Camilla's hat was reportedly made from "vintage fur" that was once her grandmother's and was refashioned into a headpiece by Philip Treacy. But that hardly matters for Tyler, who added, "It doesn't matter when the animal was killed, it's a body part and a product of cruelty."

PETA told the Mail, "We hope that Her Majesty will choose to wear something more humane in future, that better reflects the values of the British people."

Take a look and tell us what you think.

Quick Poll

Queen & Camilla in fur:

FINE. Nothing to see here.

OFFENSIVE. They are setting a style example for a nation.

LESS offensive if it's repurposed fur, like Camilla's hat.

I wonder if she knows that the White House was built by slaves.

PETA and other screwball organizations have perfected a sensationalist and grotesque ad strategy that appeals to emotion and ignores reason. It's propaganda of a quality others can only dream of. In doing so, they manage to scurry off with huge number of finite charity dollars that could improve the lives of children and adults - and save lives. Their hypocrisy with respect to scientific research is blinding. People who donate to PETA should consider living lives unencumbered and unsullied by any medical or scientific advance made available through animal research, and they should consider having their children and other loved ones do the same.

That's excellent. I hope your $100 goes toward a bucket of very good quality red tossing-paint and you'll know your rent money was well spent.

Boloney. The use of animal fur is appropiate for the prevailing temperatures. The refusal to admit our place in the universe only serves to futher disconnect people's lives from reality. We are the top prediator and should act responsibly like using all of the animal we have sacrificed/harvested.

You obviously have no idea how fur is made. Unlike leather, it is not a by-product of the food industry. The animals on fur farms are killed solely for their fur, and by means of cruel methods like anal electrocution, drowning, etc. Since when does being at the top of the food chain excuse us from knowing better and doing better? Educate yourself first before putting your foot in your mouth.

From an animal rights point of view...terrible, just terrible.
From a style point of view...terrible, just terrible. Poor Queen E, no sense of style after all these decades.

Why's Millie wearing a busby? Did they make her an honorary commander of the household guard? Yeah, the teeth could use some whitening when you smoke and drink that much over a lifetime, she already had the face sandpapered years ago in NY so why not take are of the rest of it?

Seems like an appropriate time and place to plug Prince Charles' book 'Harmony'.

Wearing the fur of dead animals is extremely poor taste even if you don't agree with animal rights people. Would anyone wear the fur of their dead dog or cat? How would animals look wearing the skins of dead 'humans'? It's just as ridiculous as wearing the dead animals. It isn't even necessary in this day and age. We have plenty of warm apparel and fake fur if you must wear it.

PETA fanatics are as bad as any other fanatics.
I've always kept pets, and raised and showed horses, my loving and being kind to animals is unquestioned. I eat meat, I wear suede and leather, and I'm not a hypocrite about it.
I can't recall the comic who made this statement, but I agree with it.
"If hooking up a car battery to a chimp's brain would cure AIDS....I only have two questions

red is positive? and black is negative?"

I'm not a member of PETA, and I know many, many people who object to fur based on its unnecessary cruelty who are also not members or advocates of PETA. They simply share a compassion for animal suffering and disgust that people think it's excusable to inflict this suffering to serve human vanity.

There is the problem with rare, exotic and endangered animals in some cases as well.

Kate Middleton should be mentioned too. She has been pictured wearing a similar ridiculous fur hat. Anything to ingratiate herself with the royal family... You would think the younger generation could see past the so called glamour of fur and sport shooting.

Agreed. Kate appears to love the blood sports. Princess Diana never warmed up to that side of the royals, and they disliked that about her.
