Apple Planning To Ship Over 5 Million Verizon Compatible iPhones In Q1 2011: REPORT

First Posted: 12/27/10 10:49 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

According to Digitimes, Apple has upped the number of iPhones it expects to ship in the first quarter of 2011, increasing its target from 19 million to between 20 and 21 million units.

Citing "sources with Taiwan-based component suppliers," Digitimes writes, "[t]he first-quarter shipment goal for WCDMA iPhones has been adjusted from 13 million units to 14-15 million units, the sources said. The shipment goal for CDMA iPhones, which will be launched in North America and Asia Pacific in the first quarter, is set at 5-6 million units, the sources added."

There have been a slew of rumors that the iPhone will be coming to Verizon. The CDMA version of the iPhone referenced by Digitimes would be compatible with Verizon's network.

An analyst with Susquehanna Financial Group said in September that Apple suppliers had plans to build Verizon-compatible iPhones. Apple Insider wrote at the time, "Analyst Jeffrey Fidacaro [...] said in a note to investors on Wednesday that checks with overseas suppliers indicated Apple is prepared to build 3 million CDMA iPhones in December, keeping the device on track for an early 2011 launch. That would put total GSM and CDMA iPhone production for the quarter at between 21 million and 22 million."

Fortune reported in October that it had "confirmed that a Verizon iPhone will be released in early 2011."

5 million in ONE quarter. Amazing. Android will be to the iPhone what the Mac is to the PC.
05:32 AM on 12/30/2010
Except it won't be. Almost everyone who's already switched from the iPhone has told me how much more they like Android. I do tech support at a major wireless company. The iPhone will sell for sure. It always has, just like anything else that Apple puts with an "i" in front of it. But people who like flexibility and full functionality over trendyness will have the Android. Just like PC and Mac. Functionality, PC. Trendy and cool and spend to much money, Mac. Several android phones hit the 500k mark in one quarter. Multiple androids are released per carrier too. The iPhone may be more popular, but it will never be the dominant figures like PC is in the computer market.

only 5-6 million iPhones for Verizon? That quantity will be sold out during presales for sure! It still doesn't sound like they have the manufacturing capacity to meet Verizon and ATT demands.

Why would I buy a lousy 3G iPhone when really cool 4G HTC Droids are on the way?

Why? Because you like inferior products?

More like because he isn't an apple fanboi who likes paying more for less.

What? Try including the AT&T versions.
05:37 AM on 12/30/2010
Even with the AT&T versions. You have to remember that Verizon wireless already has massively more customers. Then add in Sprint and T Mobile.

Android shipments way surpassed iPhone shipments this year and there's no way the iPhone will catch up.

Except it will likely be old technology based more on the 3G model platform.

Ultimately though, yes, this will hurt AT&T... but perhaps motivate them to improve. Verizon will see an uptick in service issues and complaints though as well... the phone is simply a bear on existing network technology and will likely shift a good amount of strain to Verizon.

The CEO of Verizon Wireless is pretty sharp. One can hope VZ has been upgrading their network in advance of getting the iPhone. AT&T's 3G at times is dreadful.

Shipping and selling are two different things. Apple is on the decline. IN 2011, android devices will double apple and knockout RIM and Nokia - Microsoft phone was dead on arrival. The same mistake that made apple almost go extinct in the 80s by letting an open platform that was Microsoft kick it out of contention is the same mistake old timer jobs is doing with his silly control freak mindset that he has applied to the apple mobile and handheld development platform. Only thing is that google is there to take the spoils. When will these people ever learn?

Actually, they are selling more. They're also selling them a higher price. Apple made more and more money each year by selling iPhones, and they're on target to keep increasing. It's actually some Android
The market share paradigm you reference does not exist in this case, so market share is not an issue here. Back in the 80's, choosing a platform meant having to buy different software, PRINTERS, modems, keyboards, etc. If you bought a Mac, you could have a wider choice of add-ons and software by buying "online", but back then, that meant a "phone line", during business hours!LOL . Such market restrictions do not exist for the smartphone market. If Android reaches 95% market share, I won't expect a letter from ATT telling me that since the iPhone has shrunk in market share, they are dropping support for it, or I can't easily get batteries, or whatever you imagine will happen. (What DO you imagine will happen?)
No consumers are operating out of fear that they will end up with a "Betamax of cell phones".
Even the Mac computers have been growing in both number and market share, so perhaps 'patience' is the lesson YOU could learn from the old timer?

Android has already surpassed iOS in phone shipments this year. Apple is #3 behind Symbian and Android, Both Android and iOS will pass Symbian eventually, maybe this year already, but there's no way Apple will catch up to Android again. Not with a new wave of low cost Android phones coming.

In my town, Verizon has a markedly better signal strength. My sister has to use a micro-tower to get a iPhone signal in her home and out and about. I love her iPhone and am excited @ Verizon finally coming on board with it. Verizon has been my carrier since 1994, grad sch days and has dropped only about ten calls in all those years! Verizon's signal rocks and will make a fantastic partner with iPhone!

Knowing Verizon, the data plan will be expensive.
05:43 AM on 12/30/2010
Funny you say that, since Verizon has beaten AT&T on data plans pretty consistently for awhile. The tiered data plans were the first smart thing from AT&T in awhile. Even then though its for the sake of screwing their users AT&T doesn't even offer unlimited data when you can get it on VZW for 29 bucks. VZW also has a tiered $15 plan as well. With 4G here, that 2GB will fly by like nothing and with no unlimited plan to back it, just more reason AT&T is going down the drain unless they get their act together.

All phones should work on all systems. They got guys to the moon and back. You can't tell me that they can't do this.

Your wouldn't buy a car that only ran on one brand of gas would you?

I love my iPhone ....I even love AT&T....I am on my iPhone constantly...I can go to places all over the world- ski resorts-see the Eiffel Tower ablaze with fireworks(on Bastille day) with livecams-beaches everywhere-weep at seeing the Statue of Liberty. I have apps to newspapers all over the US-including one in Ireland. I have an app for real estate with the New York Times. I can see properties- all expensive (of course! since I'm not buying, just looking) I've nearly filled up the 32 g one with almost 7000 photos and little movies, 2500 songs-all legal. I can't imagine my world without it. I have never had a problem that the Apple phone techs or AT&T techs could not guide me to correct.

I guess I should have explained just why I enjoy it. My life changed when I had health problems. I have a 50 foot-long oxygen hose that I kind of compare to a dog leash. I can get around my home just fine but just wanted my old life back....needless to say, that was not going to happen. I don't consider myself special and I know that other people go through much more than I have a right to complain about....When my daughter got an iPhone....well, I certainly had the time...and a curious thing happened..I stopped being depressed, and instead, wake up wanting to engage with all sorts of people..and that's wonderful at 62. But the point I'm trying to express is this: I thought my life was over.. it was only changed, that's all....and I'm still enjoying it, and so can someone elses' loved one whose life has changed.
