Chicago Christmas Tree, Electronics Disposal: Eco-Friendly Ways To Clean Up After The Holidays

Eco-Friendly Ways To Dispose Of Your Christmas Tree, Unwanted Electronics

If you enjoy the fresh smell and environmental benefits of a real tree on Christmas, you might be looking for the best way to dispose of the holiday purchase right about now.

Fortunately, the City of Chicago is once again offering an easy (and green) way to recycle your natural tree.

From January 1 through January 17, residents can bring their holiday tree to one of 23 participating sites throughout the city. The trees will be chipped and made into mulch--which will then be available for pick up beginning January 7. For a full list of participating locations, click here.

Residents are asked to remove all ornaments, lights and stands before dropping off the tree, but if you have lights to recycle, there are other options.

If you have burned out, broken or old holiday lights, you can bring them to any of the Chicago locations listed here and "each part will be recycled."

While you're at it, you should probably get rid of that old computer that has been gathering dust in your home office. As Gapers Block pointed out Monday, Chicago Surplus Computer at 3141 N. Central is offering free computer recycling on January 8. Learn more about them here.
